Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

@AfriNatic is there a setting I can change that can improve it?
@AfriNatic it really seems to be some form of throttling. The speedtest will fly up to over 50 down and then immediately settle at 30. I remember in the past trying with an MTN sim and getting 500 down on the same tower and the ZTE modem.

@AfriNatic just bought the NX510V Wifi Router from you guys but no improvement - seems to have a hard throttle. Just tried with my normal afrihost sim and got well over 100mbps down on 5G. So the fixed wireless service seems to be throttled.

18 + days and still no SIM card delivered. I contacted Afrihost last week who confirmed it would be delivered on Friday only for that not to happen. I then contacted Afrihost on WhatsApp, MYBB direct message, and Twitter on Sunday evening and Monday, who confirmed delivery on Tuesday 17 September. Guess what. NO Delivery or communication from either Afrihost or the useless courier(CourieIT). I also have camera footage and call logs showing no courier IT vehicle was at the entrance of my premiss and no phone calls /WhatsApp/email.

Please confirm if the SIM was delivered last night.

much better thanks! 160 down and 16 up. Are you able to say what was the issue in case it comes back in future?
Thank you.

There was a misconfiguration that may have contributed to the slow speeds.
We apologise for the inconvenience caused.

Anyone who got the 100 mbps deal and is using their own router? I tried inserting the sim into a HUAWEI B535-932, set the apn settings correctly and everything, and yet I cannot connect to the internet.

My router shows carrier registration failed, Afrihost agents said MTN confirmed sim works on their side, and clientzone says my sim is active.

P.S. router is not faulty, I have two other lte sims that seem to be working on the exact same router.

Where did you get the router? It could be network locked.

Post a screenshot of your APN settings here?

That APN settings should be fine. The router is on the compatibility list.

Have you tried a factory reset and then setting it up?
Yup, tried about 5 times since last night, been through 3 Afrihost agents on the WhatsApp line to no avail

On a side note I tried something out.

So I put the sim back in my phone and it picked up the network bars, however the data did not turn on. I then quickly enabled data roaming on my phone and added the Afrihost apn and it suddenly started working.

I don’t want to use the data on my phone though since I’m pretty sure the sim will be blocked by MTN?

Yes it will block.

I think your router is not allowing the MTN SIM

Does it show MTN on the status page?

I thought the same

No, the router keeps saying ‘Registration with carrier failed’, so I don’t even think it’s connecting to the MTN network

‘Registration with carrier failed’ does mean that its not able to register on the network.

I know with my Huawei B618 I could play with the frequency/channel settings.

Another thing to check:

Make sure network connection is set to Auto and not Manual.

If it is Auto, try Manual and see if it shows you the MTN network?

Ah okay, maybe I should try playing with the frequency bands and see what happens.

Yep, has been set to auto. When I tried manual I saw MTN 4G and MTN 3G. When I selected MTN 4G and clicked save, it came up with ‘Failed to register network. Switch to automatic search?’

Yes use Automatic.

MTN uses 3 LTE Bands.

Band 1 (2100MHz) 10MHz dual channel spectrum
Band 3 (1800MHz) 10MHz dual channel spectrum
Band 8 (900MHz) 5MHz dual channel spectrum.

There used to be a tool you can use to manually change the bands on the forum for the B618. Don't know if that would work with yours though

Here is the thread: https://mybroadband.co.za/forum/threads/do-you-see-4g-or-4g-with-rain.920902/post-20667472

@cavedog had a link to download the tool but that link is now dead.
