Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

Did you not try Twitter, support requests, WhatsApp?

Not that any of that has helped in my case...just the usual canned replies, blaming MTN and enough "I'm sorries" to fill an Olympic swimming pool.

Day 3 nearly here soon for me...
I’ve tried Facebook, Twitter, email and Facebook messenger.

The activation process needs to be improved but the speeds look very good. Hopefully MTN will manage their network a lot better than Rain!

OK finally I am connected!

After @AfriMan (thanks for your help in getting things rolling  ) got back to me to confirm I was now provisioned my router then showed a 5 bar signal but status was showing as disconnected ( as others had mentioned)

Playing around with the settings ( disabling both data roaming and auto select network - which enabled works with my Rain Fixed LTE sim by the way) it then magically connected.

Impressive speeds...far,far better (x 10) than Rain ever attained in last 18 months I have been with them.

I was getting ready to phone axxess to tell them to shove it, but then low and behold...! Looks like the frustration may have been worth it. :)
Well, that didn't last very long at all. Full signal...

Hmmm
Peak hour maybe? At 140Mb for a speedtest I don;'t want to do them too regularly, i'm on a 30+30...
Go to "settings-system-device information" and post your RSRQ/RSRP/SNR,etc

I shall speed test later and revert.
Here are mine:
RSRQ: -3dB
RSRP: -85dBm
SINR: 16dB

Here you go:

RSRQ: -9dB
RSRP: -88dBm
SINR: 2dB

Nice forcing you to use a CAT6 and above router yet you don't even get LTE-A.....

You gonna have to use the band tool to force LTE-A

Found the link, will give it a try, thanks.

So you are going to use

LTE_1800+2100_UPLOAD_2100.bat

MTN uses 3 LTE Bands.

Band 1 (2100MHz) 10MHz dual channel spectrum
Band 3 (1800MHz) 10MHz dual channel spectrum
Band 8 (900MHz) 5MHz dual channel spectrum.

For anyone wondering here is the bands supported and carrier aggregation band supported by the B618s-22d. The -65d version should be similar.

@cavedog So how come he initially got such good speeds?

P.S Mine are still strong....75+ Mbps DL, 20ish DL

So how come he initially got such speeds?

Could be a band change. Router switched from Band 1 to 8 or 1 to 3 and some are congested. If you look at a LTE phone they always support Band 3. That is likely the most congested band on all networks world wide. Band 1 is refarmed 3G spectrum and band 8 is refarmed 2G/3G spectrum.

Band 8 will likely be the less congested band of the 3 but has the least amount of spectrum. Signal from this band also travels so coverage from 1 tower with this band is extensive which could be a problem if there are a lot of users with devices like S8 upwards as they do 3 carrier aggregation.

/explanation

Thanks.

Well should things change as drastically with my connection I don't think the band tool will help my 22d...tried it for Rain and it failed to change bands( I suspect it is aggregating though with 70+ Mbps speeds )
My signal stats look pretty good ...my connected tower must be much closer than the Rain one or less congested ( at this point in time with MTN onboarding still in early stages.... )

Thanks a lot. It's odd - it was showing 4G+ for a short while, but is showing "4G" now.

Current Network Mode: 03
Current Network Band: 3FFFFFFF
Current LTE Band: 5 (1800+2100)

SUCCESS

Thanks a lot. It's odd - it was showing 4G+ for a short while, but is showing "4G" now.

When it idles it will fall back to 4G when some data gets transferred it will start to show 4G+ again.

Speeds increased?

Mine too. 4G+ miraculously disappeared...first time I've ever seen it on my router in 18 months.
Brief and fleeting :D

Aha, that makes sense.

Ah, that makes sense.
Still battling unfortunately.

Try Forcing band 8 900MHz only. See if that helps. I really am surprised that you are getting poor speeds like that especially on MTN.

Also I see you are using wifi. Try changing the wifi band in router or use cable just to diagnose.
