Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE-A Thread

Which device are you using?

I always recommend new simcard to be inserted into a phone first. Let it register on the MTN network for 2min or so. Then insert the sim card into the router and set the APN to ws.afrihost.fwa username and password blank.

I'm moving to a new town and unfortunately there no official fixed MTN LTE coverage however I am just outside the coverage area. Can I just register to a nearby address?

It would not be advisable. If you will be connecting to the same tower then it will likely work as expected however if you do connect to a tower that is not approved for FIxed LTE MTN will suspend the simcard as the location is not accepted for Fixed LTE.

You can give it a try to see if MTN accepts the location however since you would be slightly out of the coverage if you do proceed it would be at your own risk.

Have you looked at Telkom LTE coverage?

I've found Telkom to be extremely unreliable in the past and I've read many people who have had issues with them. I would much rather stay away.

I have managed to find out the exact tower I connect to, can I DM you to check if this tower does support fixed LTE? My new place is on a hill and I have line of sight to a specific tower.

You can send me a dm with the address also let's see what info we can give you. I can't guarantee that MTN will accept your address if you are just out of range though so you might need to go for a small package first and see if the speeds are acceptable and if MTN is willing to accept the address.

Just like with MTN the Telkom simcards is dependent on coverage and tower congestion. For me personally at my home I get ~10Mbps on MTN fixed LTE but well above 100Mbps on Telkom so it really depends from location to location.

Are we ever getting rid of this nighttime data crap...i'm paying for something i never use and have to upgrade my package just to get more data when i need it...while the other 50% never gets used. /rant over

Hi,

Its a difficult one this. The added night data is an extra portion of data worked into the deal that clients might find useful. It's way MTN is trying to distribute the load on the network to prevent congestion.

Night data is usually used for clients that can schedule large data downloads during off peak periods.

why not do a 60:40 split?

Hi AfriNatic,

Here's an example. Getting blocked by sites for using VPN/Proxy. "You have been blocked by proxycheck".

My Afrihost MTN Fixed LTE was working well enough for two months. The last week the link is up for minutes or hours then it goes down. There is severe packet loss too. Afrihost support, well, let me update that incident in another post.

The ZTE MF286 router LED goes from blue to green and according to the manual, green means 3G. I cannot even get a single ICMP packet through on 3G. So 3G, green, means no link at all so it seems. My iPhone6s with Telkom mobile SIM works when the link is downgraded to 3G. I use the mobile in a USB tethered setup as failover.

Telkom has much less throughput than MTN but... 3G on Telkom means I can still work via SSH!

Can anyone please confirm if their 3G works on a MF286 from Afrihost?

Thank you.

I don't know if 3G is still available directly from MTN, but from my own experience can confirm that it's unavailable via Afrihost (been like that since 'day one') & probably all the other resellers of MTN ??

I've been using a Huawei B525 router, so don't think it has anything to do with the router you use, just the type of service or package on offer.

On my MF286C I manually selected MTN 3G and registered. Nope, does not work.

I can confirm that Telkom prepaid LTE does work on 3G when manually selected on said router.

Additionally, I had to disable roaming via USSD on Telkom. It insisted upon roaming and hence broke my Telkom network only bundle.

My Telkom contract SIM in an iPhone6s works with data on 4G, 3G. I cannot confirm roaming data works as I haven't seen the roaming PLMN name displayed (yet).

This is a LTE (4G only) offering.

Mine at the West Coast is looking OK (over RDP)

@AfriNatic: If I cancel my Afrihost/MTN Pure LTE service can it be restarted again in a few months time using the current SIM or would I need to order and RICA a new SIM?

On MTN and Telkom Fixed LTE there is no pause unfortunately so a cancellation means that the simcard will be cancelled and when you signup again it would be for a new simcard and number requiring RICA and delivery of the new sim again.

@AfriNatic: Was hoping that I could just pause the service for a few months but many thanks for the detailed reply.

@Jake45 - Axxess (as you probably know, owned by Afrihost) have Telkom LTE at R99pm for 10GB + 10GB.
If you have Telkom available in your area, might be worth considering as R99 won't be so hard on the pocket each month. Then when you're ready again, you can up the data package accordingly. That's one way of keeping an LTE service going at a decent rate, without having to sign up each time you need to cancel, when you ultimately wanted to pause it.

Just a suggestion.

@BayCityRoller: Many thanks for the suggestion. I am actually thinking about switching to one of the Cell C Home Connecta Flexi bundles which I have been testing for the last month but am still not sure whether the performance will deteriorate badly in the future which is why I was hoping that my current MTN SIM card would remain active for a few months.

I do have a Telkom prepaid SIM that I can recharge if things do deteriorate suddenly but am hoping that Cell C will manage their network better this time around.

Hopefully both MTN and Telkom will reduce their pricing to similar levels very soon. MTN is currently offering their 100GB Home WiFi bundle for R269 which includes a 'free' router which seems to offer more value than the 30+30GB Fixed LTE bundle from most of the ISPs.
