What is the problem with your network today?
There's definitely a problem with line speeds for the last week, if not longer, where they are completely inconsistent. It has nothing to do with my personal line, or resetting a port, or any other rubbish I get told over the phone. It is clearly a problem with the network itself somewhere and it is about high time this gets resolved instead of acting dumb and playing coy.

Well I tried a trial account with Crystal Web, and they are on IS and i got the same results, so I think that may rule out an Afrihost problem?

Hi @AfriMan - sending you a PM with some Q's, when you have a chance to answer them :)

Ok Boffins, i need some advice here. I am having a weird problem. My local speeds are super, but international speeds not so much. My line is syncing at 5mps but I can no longer stream any web video without it buffering every few seconds. Afrihost says all clear their side, Telkom say the same, we have reset the port, changed the syncing speed, all to no avail. The problem persists. If other people were reporting the same I would say it is a problem further down the line, but I am not seeing that. So what could the problem be? It started on Saturday, which coincided with the Afrihost network blip, but it seems to be unrelated to that. What do the resident Geniuses say?

I'm assuming you aren't using any VPN or SMART DNS services like unotelly?. I would recommend doing a hard reset of your router, just to remove firmware as the issue, disable wifi, run only one pc to test your connection, this could also be virus related as some viruses tend to stuff up your bandwidth, maybe try a different router. This could also be ASSIA related, as I'm experiencing the same issue at the moment...my SNR and ATT stats are above normal, and I still see line errors, not a lot but enough to cause packet loss..I would also recommend changing your line back to 4mb just to see if it helps.

Thanks, not using VP or smart DNS. I get the same reset over a cable connection and with wifi. We did change the line back to 4mbps with no result. What is ASSIA? Even my downloads are super slow, it is taking me over an hour to download 66mb....eish!!!! I will check for viruses but i doubt this is the case as any device connected to the modem has the same problem.

I present to you: ASSIA DSM

thats ASSIA, your SNR is too low

ASSIA is a piece of software that Telkom uses to monitor DSL lines in real-time and make adjustments to the sync of the line to ensure that your connection is as stable as possible.

This shouldn't be affecting your download speeds or streaming though. :(

Definitely a puzzling one, I think krustyrsa may have a point, would you be able to do a factory reset on your modem? There may be something strange going on with the firmware.

I will do that, but how it remains a mystery why the firmware would only affect international speeds and not local speeds. What is maddening is that there is a reason for the problem, but who knows what that is?

Whats causes download and streaming issues is the fact that hes SNR is very low. I have the same line stats, when ASSIA kicks in and increases line speed with those line stats, it does not leave much for fault tolerance. My download speed would be inconsistent and Netflix streaming quality would drop and even sometimes, like he explained buffer a lot .

Well you may have a point, but i got the line in november last year, the SNR has always been low, but we have been streaming with no issues until Saturday.

:(

There definitely aren't any issues on our side at the moment.

What sort of problems are you experiencing on your connection?
