Afrihost New Network Feedback

Over the past two weeks we have been noticing various issues. I have changed our DNS to use Google's servers rather than Afrihost and this solved plenty problems. However, there is one intermittent issue which persists. International traffic performance fluctuates. At times Windows Update, Apple App Store and traffic to international servers just dies or slows to a crawl. This was a big problem when we were on the Old Afrihost network. Since we were cut over to the new Afrihost network this problem disappeared. Over the past month I noticed a gradual deterioration. This morning things are particularly bad. Update files takes ages to download. And this is on a 20 Mbps line. Whats up with this Afrihost?

Morning jmacc! Sorry to hear about your poor experience. We're not seeing any network issues this morning and I'll definitely need to see some tests. What speeds are you currently seeing when downloading your update files? Could you maybe run an international traceroute?

Best would be to send these while using Auto DNS. :)

aaaaaaaaaaaaaand My dsl is down again.. Voice line is also still down. Im getting tired of this now, as Telkom is messing me about now.

Morning! :) What info would you like?

Why my torrent speeds drop each evening at 19:00 and then seems to go full speed from about 22:00. I posted extensively about this last night, sent test results and screenshots. its getting irritating that I do all the tests required and then have to keep on asking for feedback or to find out what is happening. A few users are experiencing the same thing.

are there any sign of congestion on those tests between those times?

Nope, because if I switch to webafrica, stop the torrent and restart it, it immediately goes to max line speed. So the issue is not congestions, not my router, not my pc, its Afrihost

interesting, because im also in the Cape, and my torrents last night ran at around 690kb/s, which is still down from the 1.4mb/s i did a couple nights ago. so there is definately nothing wrong with the network for me at least.

what sort of account are you using with Afrihost?

My Speedtest results:
- 20ms ping
- 19.27 Mbps download speed
- 1.93 Mbps upload speed.
Windows update and Apple App store updates just sit there at times. Sometimes the updates download at full line speed but not today. The best update file downloads I have seen today was downloads at around 1.4 Mbps. Local traffic is fine. A tracert at the third hop is 21 ms. The second hop just return *. I think Telkom blocks ICMP traffic at this hop. All hops to www.google.co.za is 23 ms and below. All 8 hops in the trace is less than 23 ms.

I have exactly the same issue with Windows Update and Apple App store updates. Over the past 4 weeks it got progressively worse. If you switch ISP accounts the downloads max out at full line speed.

I understand that you're upset, but I mentioned last night that I passed the details and test results onto our networking team. Unfortunately I can't push a button that increases your torrent speed.

Did you setup testing to see when your throughput got better?
While I know that testing can be tedious, we do need a significant amount of data to test further - and if that isn't forthcoming from you it's going to be hard to see this resolved.

Sorry to hear this.
I do know that MS released some big-ish updates last night, so could be some throughput strain from their end?

:D bugger off lol
lol :D, nah just pulling your leg dude. I would have blood pouring from my ears from anger, if that happened to me :P. I feel your pain bro..hope they fix it soon ,so that you could come back and show off your high speed VDSL connection again :D

well I have given you all you needed, and I stated in a later post that the speed increased at about 22:00, and at 22:30 I was at full speed. So I have done everything except for the Usenet which I don't know how to do.
