Afrihost New Network Feedback

When I saw this persons post last night I checked and http://store.steampowered.com/ indeed did not load. After reestablishing the connection it worked again. So I can confirm something was up.

Hhhmm, very odd.
I'll make a note to test this tonight after 8pm to see if I can replicate on my end. What DNS servers are you using?

Also, were you able to ping the site?

I'm using the automatically assigned DNS. I ran tracert and the third hop was consistently over 100ms (also tested to www.mweb.co.za and third hop was fine), I did not save the traces unfortunately.

Could be slow responses from your exchange, hard to tell though.
If/ when you see this again, please grab a ping to bras.afrihost.com, a full traceroute/ MTR and a ping to the 3rd hop :)

Possibly an Akamai issue? I seem to be able to ping the site OK this morning.

Code:
--- e11582.dscx.akamaiedge.net ping statistics ---
5 packets transmitted, 5 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 37.058/37.623/38.744/0.609 ms

Working fine again today. Their SQL course site also had issues, they've posted an announcement that their servers are having issues. The proxy was most likely accessing a cached version.

Ah OK!
Seeing issues on any other sites?

What are the results if you assign the google dns?

Have not tested, was kind of last minute rushed testing I was doing. If it happens again I will do more thorough tests, last night was the first time I've seen anything remotely problematic.

Will do. :)

Will do. :)

Thanks dude :)

So literally on queue at around 11pm last night service jumped back to normal as if nothing had happened. It is just the oddest thing to see certain international services die so suddenly and then fix themselves after. I was going to put it down to the Telkom area "upgrade" but its not just me.

Tonight I will log a bunch of random tests when the services all die again (if they die) and send them to you AfriGuy/Man/Person ;)

The more tests the better!

As a start, a traceroute/ MTR and a few pings to affected sites are always helpful. If it's Akamai related, you can ping whoami.akamai.com.
For other stranger issues, wireshark is where it's at :)

Akamai makes me want to go all Ninja on somebody. :D

I'm currently paying for a 10 MB line but only getting 8 MB speeds, by the sounds of it I might as well downgrade my line to 8 MB, I'm just scared that Telkom then further mess it up and only sync me at 6.

Try changing your adsl mode to G.dmt.

Your other tests in the thread show pretty low SNR margins :(
Not sure if you saw my previous post around the option to downgrade to 8Mbps?

Point is I'm still getting 4 MB actual speeds even though my line is syncing at 8 MB, so something weird is definatly up.
Once I get speeds as if I have a faster than 4 MB line, then I'll start looking at the 8 MB 10 MB issue, for now I just want faster speeds

Could be due to the stats, they're pretty borderline - or the area simply can't support higher throughput values.
Is the experience the same when using another ISP?

Yesterday afternoon AfriGenie PM'd me a test account to do speed tests with for 20 minuts, I did around 5 speed tests with it and the resulting speeds was exactly the same.

If the same issues are seen across 2 account it usually means the line/ area is the issue here :(
We can always test the Telkom guest account to make 100% sure though, do you have the details to test?
