Afrihost - no special for 100GB

I had an interesting chat with one of the Afrihost sales people now.
One of my internet accounts is a 100GB capped Afrihost package, where I have been receiving 100GB, plus 100 free bandwidth. So 200GB in total. Now, after the announcment today about the extra bandwith being given to the lower packages, and the special being extended until August, I went to their website, and noticed the 100 + 100 package was removed. The 50 + 50 , or 20 + 20 is there, but not the 100 + 100.
I phoned sales and thought it must be that they ran out of space on their website, so they couldn't fit in the 100 + 100 special But they confirmed they would only do the special up to the 50's, and not the 100GB accounts.

The interesting thing is, when I asked the Sales person if I could just cancel my 100GB account, downgrade to a 50, and buy another 50, he said yes, thus giving me my 50 + 50 and another 50 + 50 (200GB). So I can keep my savings, but I just thought it was weird as it would just save some hassle on both sides if they just extended the special to the 100GB account?

i strongly suggest you shop around some more...i average 10GB/ day

so i guess 300GB for me this month.

one could easily do 600GB...

Well regardless of what is cheaper and whatnot, it's "customer service" like this where you just want to whack someone upside the head. Seriously, so you have a customer on a 100GB+100GB special, single account and all, they're happy. Now you drop that and force them to "jippo" the system by making TWO smaller accounts in order to get the EXACT same benefit. So it's not like they don't offer anything at that price and that it's not available at that pricing , they're just making YOU jump through hoops to -remain- on said price+package and for what?

End result? It is exactly this situation that creates an "opportunity" for the customer to LEAVE and look for something SIMPLE . I mean geez, why would anyone want 2 accounts and DOUBLE the administration and monitoring when you could have 1 account? Worse, this might not even be the cheapest either, but you might have been willing to remain since it "just worked" , but now they create a situation where it is just a PITA .

It almost reminds me of the days where i was sitting with 3 prepaid MTN simcards and swopping them every week because MTN was stupid enough not to allow you to "top up" within a 30 day period. I went to Vodacom who had the exact same pricing minus the silly sim swopping BS. End Result? MTN changed their systems pretty quickly.

i strongly suggest you shop around some more...i average 10GB/ day

so i guess 300GB for me this month.

Afrihost has definitely lost their previous reputation for customer service and innovative product offerings. There seems to be a general lack of thinking thoroughly through an offering before they actually launching it. Causing hassles like this and resulting in another knock to their already suffering reputation.

Snobee, I'd add my vote that you try Mweb. It will save you costs and their service delivery is pretty good.

I'm on the 4MB Mweb uncapped and using Downstorm I can download 20GB + a day (since it allows your torrents to download via HTTP at full speed all day.) Take 20GB x 30 days and it'll give you the 600GB... although I really have no want to download that much since I cant even watch/play/listen to the 200GB I downloaded last month. I am personally happy downloading a lot less this month.

i also discovered downstorm 3 days ago!!

took me 6 days to do 40 GB on uTorrent but 3 days to do 60GB almost on Downstorm... can't live without them now!

they are down though for upgrades, cant wait till they are back!

Mine is still running at 180Kb ... I also found all my torrents running slowly then started with Downstorm and it's been flying! Great company and the service has been fantastic.

How much would 600gb cost you via downstorm though?

It's the same amount for whatever amount of GB you download. How it works is that you are buying space on their server and downloading it from the server. So if you only bought 10GB space on the server (like I did, on the R99 special they ran the start of the month) I can download torrents to the size of 10GB to their system, from there I download it to my computer via HTTP then delete the files on their system and get ready to download more stuff.

It works very well and they've even made options available for downloading torrents of bigger sizes then your space allows.

They offer a trial on their site to test out, I think its 250MB.

I'm using a FireFox addon "DownloadThemAll!" Doesn't give me any hassles.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think my biggest fear is the unrealibility of uncapped, especially the ones going for R400/R500. That is why I also have a SAINET uncapped account for R2600. I have learnt you get what you pay for in SA, and as I am responsible for the internet of a few hundred users, I tend to pay more for better quality. I have to admit though Mweb seems to be an anomaly to this theory! I have numerous lines with different providers, and route/load share among them, as I also believe in not leaving all my eggs in one basket. So I think it is time I signed up with Mweb and tested them. Thanks for the advice guys.
