I recently bought a 20 gig capped account just to test out what Afrihost is like as I'm a little fed up with you know who.
The connection is great, the downloads are terrific, pings are good but I have some strange problems.
Skype refuses point blank to sign me in.
Many times Chrome will say "Oops, sorry, Chrome could not find the URL" and after a refresh the URL comes in, this sometimes even happens to my start up page www.goggle.co.za
This is a real pain in the butt.
Several other things also take a long time to come up, like Dropbox for instance.
My email client often says it cannot find smtp.gmail.com, again a refresh and it finds it.
I switch back to my other ISP and all is well and all the above problems work great.
This is somewhat worrying as the end of the month is drawing near for me to switch ISP's.
Anyone have any idea's ?

Very strange! Could you please tell me which DNS servers you have configured? Please would you try using 196.7.7.7

I was using DNS 196.7.7.7 and 196.7.8.9
Sorry for the spelling (goggle = google) but you guys know how to crash a topic hence the high post count :)

hmm... strange - try using 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

196.7.7.7 and 196.7.8.9 is the correct Afrihost DNS

Sounds like a DNS issue.

^^ This. You could some troubleshooting on your own. In Windows, open up a command prompt, and run the following command:
nslookup google.com

Substitute google.com with any other domains you have problems with. That will tell you which DNS server your PC is using, and let you know if the server responds, and what the response is. Run the tests multiple times, and see what happens.

Then change your DNS to Google DNS, and test again. Note the results. Then change to Open DNS, and see what happens.

Thanks guys, that seems to have done the trick.

With DNS 196.7.7.7 / 196.7.8.9

Awesome - very strange that the default DNS was not working? Oh well, glad its sorted

Ok another small problem has cropped up and after several tests now, it is definently only happening on Afrihost.
After a while, an hour or so, the little computer icon on my taskbar shows a red cross on it and says "No Internet connection".
When it is in this condition, I do have Internet, I can browse, download, game, do anything I want as the connection is there, it's just the icon that has a red cross on it and tells me I have no connection.
I switch back to Mweb and all is well, even after 12 hours still ok.
I switch to Afrihost, and sure enough within an hour or 2, a red cross appears - "No Internet Connection"
It does this regardless of the above DNS's.
On the modem itself, it says GOOD for the connection, shows the IP, DNS and everything it's supposed to show.
My obvious thought was it's the modem, but on Mweb it does not do this, only on Afrihost... weird ?

Uhmm... that just shows that there has been a disconnect from a lan cable? If it were yellow - that would be different. I do not know how this could relate to AH in any way, but others on the forum may know

.... I do not know how this could relate to AH in any way, ....
I fully agree, but somehow it does, as when I'm on Mweb it never happens else I would have noticed it long before now.
Unfortunately my 20 GB temp package I took out with AH is 96% done so I need to stay on Mweb now.

This refers to the thread in general.
For the last week the DNS 196.7.7.7 and 196.7.8.9 cannot be reached. Internet access is impossible.
First Afrihost said that the router had to be reset and reconfigured, than that there was nothing wrong with the network, than that there was a technical problem and internet would get back on when it is on.

tracert 196.7.7.7 and pinging the intervening hops shows that 196.7.7.0 (MTN Business) caannot be reached.

Contacting [email protected] to get more details brings no reply.

That is SA service at its best.

Afrihost cannot in any way cause the red cross you are describing. Unless they send out one of their red Afrihost branded trokkies, break into your house and cut a few cables.

Could you confirm if the red cross you see looks exactly like this?
network_unplugged.jpg ...and with exactly I mean exactly.

Also, do you run XP / Vista / Win 7 / 8 ?
