Afrihost are awesome, BUT.....

As a new customer I found it slightly difficult to get my head around their services. From what I've heard they are a great provider of cheap and reliable blended bandwidth. :D

Now here is the issue.
Due to ZA Portal's fraud allegations, they've made it more difficult to aquire bandwidth. I don't have a camera (I moved countries) and I had to use my mates phone to send a copy of my ID. Once sent to Afrihost my account was activated within 5 minutes so that was great! :)

Surely when you signup with your ID, they have contacts in the government to check the ID's against the bank accounts and residence?

Another issue I had was the package itself. I know how pro-rata works and I think its a great idea paying in ratio for new customers. However I read somewhere that if you topup, that topup lasts for over a year. I even phoned Afrihost where I spoke to a lovely receptionist. I gave her this scenario...

I'm on the 3GB package and I want to topup 10GB once off. Theorectically I have a maximum of 13GB for that month. If I use 4GB I'll have a remaining 9GB's left of the topup and next month, I'll have a maximum usage of 12GB?

She said this was correct and I was satisfied by this. :o

However when I went to topup, I noticed the page said: "The topup must be used by the 31st of December 2009 at 23:59:59"
I initially thought it was the end of the year so If I ordered the topup on trhe 1st of January I would be alright....

WRONG!

Turns out the topup isn't carried on and I'd have to use the pre-paid bandwidth.

At R39 bucks, who's to complain right?
Just wish it was worded a little more clearer.

/rant

Topup != prepaid (even though you pay for it in advance :p)

If anybody from Afrihost reads this, would you mind stop mailing me asking to send you a copy of my ID? You didn't tell me before I signed up that you needed it, and I'm not sending it now. I already got bandwidth from WA and they already have my money.

Are they going to be able to guess your details?

What details? It seems they already deducted money from my CC too. Dear Afrihost, please refund me if you're not going to give me internet.

you know there is a real difference between top-up and pre-paid, right ?

top-up: more bandwidth within the current month cycle

pre-paid: bandwidth that usually lasts 12 months.

Seriously sending a copy of your ID should be the the easiest thing ever, age of the Computer no? :P

Fact is Afrihost offer an awesome deal at R29 a gig and have added security by requiring the ID etc. this just makes life easier for everyone in the long run.

People who come on here and say "ahh hell, I didn't know they need my ID so stuff them, they lose business". All I say to you is stfu, how about you read one of over 9000 threads which already state this!! HOMEWORK ISNT FOR SCHOOLBOYS ONLY

RICA - which is law now, requires that you supply proof of identity.

It is the same for ALL ISP's, cellular providers, etc ...

...and here is the official webafrica forum link

http://forums.webafrica.co.za/http//usersisdslnet/actual_data/actual_data/_2056.html

Please be advised that effective 12 February there will be some minor changes to the client signup process.

All new signups will be required to provide one of the following;

1. South African ID Number
2. Passport Number
3. Company Registration Number

This information is required to lower the risk of fraudulent occurrences, and in so doing offer a better service.

well you are in err :o,
all isps clearly mark their products as either pre-paid or non prepaid.

even webafrica's cap accounts have top-up feature. its not like afrihost all of a sudden now uses those wording and the way it works.

LOL true.

After using my afrihost account for the first time, I'm bloody impressed.
My current package is Telkom Do 2 and Afrihost. I've never seen such a cheap and affordable deal tbh. I use local bandwidth so it's all good. :D

I find these threads a bit repetitive...

Someone has a complaint, Necuno clears things up, random people call Necuno a fanboi. How long is this going to go on for?

It never stops unfortunately. Much like the Xbox 360 vs Ps3, Pc vs Mac and which religion is the best debates...

I also got the prepaid account instead, thing is if it's prepaid why make it pro rata? makes no sense. That means you need to topup at the start of the month to not lose "prepaid" bandwidth.

well we all makes mistakes or understands things wrongly it happens. i've also done it with some other things thinking that it would be A because another simliar thing it was A.

suppose one can be less bombastic about it when someone is in err or when you are making a thread about it :o
