As far as I know according to SA law we are not obliged to give copies of our ID's to anyone this includes banks etc, we have just become so used to doing this we never query it. Companies should only be verifying by looking at your ID!
I did not like the fact Afrihost wan't copies of I.D. they do not offer accounts or credit so there is no reason to ask for it.
Please be advised that effective 12 February there will be some minor changes to the client signup process.
All new signups will be required to provide one of the following;
1. South African ID Number
2. Passport Number
3. Company Registration Number
This information is required to lower the risk of fraudulent occurrences, and in so doing offer a better service.

According to section 39 of the RICA a telecommunications service provider must, before entering to a contract with any person:
--Obtain his or her full names, identity number, residential and business or postal address
--Obtain a certified photocopy of his or her identification document on which his or her photo, full names and identity number, whichever is applicable, appear;
--Retain the photocopy obtained
--Verify the photo, full names and identity number, whichever is applicable, of that person with reference to his or her identification document
The same type of information should be obtained, verified and kept for business clients.
Telecommunications Service Providers are also required to keep records of:
--All the information obtained during the registration process
--the telephone number or any other number allocated to the person concerned
--Any other information in respect of the person concerned which the telecommunication service provider concerned may require in order to enable him or her to identify that person.
There are very few ISPs who currently adhere to all of the requirements of the RICA, and this may come to haunt them at a later stage if the state decides to start policing the implementation of the Act.

I have one of these free fax 2 email numbers.
So the other day a random fax comes through. Its certified copy of some ones ID document.
What stops me from signing up with afrihost with her name and surname and email that copy to afrihost and enter some unsuspected person's bank details for the debit order?
NOTHING! They will only be able to trace me via ip when afrihost gets a sipina to get that from my ISP.
SO this does not prevent fraud at ALL!
*And don't tell me that the bank will deny the debit order cause they won't.
**Ive done a test. I'm very good friends with my neighbour. He reckons activating a debit order without his signed consent is NOT possible! So I proved him wrong. I paid him R145 and said wait for the sms from FNB.
I signed up @ mweb no questions asked by just knowing
1. account number
2. Which bank
3. What account type savings/transmission/cheque
He was billed successfully and I canceled the account with Mweb.
Its SOOOOOOO easy to commit direct fraud with debit order. the most shocking part! None of the details I have given Mweb was valid info. The address didn't exist nor the the first name or the ID number for that matter!
So how is a copy of your ID going to stop fraud? And this is possible with many ISP's. i know a couple of them. So mweb is not the only one!
and your point is? the person on the other side of the line is not omnipresent btw. they can only go on what is given to them and if it matches well tough **** it matched.
it is not like they will drive out to your location and do a face to face verification or a dna match and of course it is easy to go and commit fraud. no-one is contesting that. the fact is this is standard practice and required by rica whether or not you like it- get with the program or leave it. going on and on and on like a broken record will not change that fact, period. i suggest you take it up with rica and see how far you get with your non-compliance.
on the other hand you ahead and have fun with using other person's details, but don't come and complain when you become someone's wife in prison.
