Afrihost Slow Uncapped

Mine was up to 70-90KBps late last night, but back down to 10-20KBps after about 6/7 am this morning.

My speeds are back to normal, seems the IS issues have been resolved.

Updated shaping/throttling policies for 384 and 512 accounts on Afrihost's site (Uncapped ADSL FAQs.)
No respite though for the 4Mbps users...

my speeds bumped up to 30KBps last night again, luck or relaxed throttling?

Also saw a sudden improvement on local dc++ downloads sometime last night (from about 10KB/s to about 50 to 100KB/s on 4Mbit line - much more reasonable) ... I hope it will be a permanent improvement but time will tell. Would help if they were more transparent about it.

New 384kbps

After you have moved 15 GBs you will be moved into a different category whereby certain ports will be shaped more aggressively. However, web and email will still be prioritised.

After moving a total of 30 GBs you will be moved into a different category where your line speed is throttled to 256 kbps per second and certain shaping protocols are in place.

After moving a total of 45 GBs then you will be moved into a category where you will be throttled to 128 kbps. Certain shaping protocols will also be in place here.

I could live with this but not ideal, i wonder if its worth the effort moving to mweb.

i am having a problem
painfully slow
when i phone support they tell me the line in congested
they say some users are downloading 250 gb +
then why do the call the package uncapped then

My sarcasm detector is beeping, hehe.

As Afrihost implies.. "Just remember kids, if you more than 7GB's a month it makes sense to go for uncapped, but If you use more than 20GB's you better go back to capped".

This company needs to lay off the coke..

@divad. It seems fairly common to get all sorts of random excuses from them, everyone gets something different.. did they blame Telkom yet?

First month on afrihost uncapped. Average speed has been 5 to 10 kB/s, on a 384 kB line after i hit 20GB.

I'm moving to axess.

personally, and I think there is scientific proof about it somewhere - I think carrier pigeons are better than AH.

I was with them for 1 year, cancelled and moved to Mweb.

From afrihost: "Please note that yes you are (been throttled), since the second you have downloaded 25 gigs so your account is currently being managed" Managed means I can't even browse anymore. I mean seriously, if the torrents are the problem then just shape the hell out of them, but don't cut out my browsing. Checking email is a biatch. Now to decide to go with Mweb or axess. I see top users are hitting 170 GB on uncapped managed accounts.

Afrihost: "Yes, your speed will be restored if your usage drops. Priority is given to the lower users as the higher users effect the network."

I suppose that's fair. But it doesn't make sense for me to stay with AH if i can get less "management" somewhere else.

Afrihost - What an absolute disgrace! Have cancelled my account with them. Honestly, we're paying for dialup without the Telkom data call costs. Struggling to break 5kB / s and I havent even moved 4 gig this month yet. "Managed" more like mangled.

Yep. I've also cancelled. Both their product and customer service are absolutely appalling in this case. Just try getting answers out of them... they will dodge the usage question until you've gone stark raving mad.

Dont go with Axxess either. Same story.

That was my next stop. I suppose the only alternative is MWEB.

Also Afrihost Uncapped = Strictly Shaped 25GB capped. In general uncapped is a shaped capped account with lower per gig pricing. In this case its R8/GB, so if you get their capped + special its R10/GB.

Actually they are all reselling the exact same product from IS, so it doesn't matter who you go to. Mweb has its own network so they have different policies and procedures for their uncapped account.
