Being excessively throttled by Afrihost even when their "network fully operational" icon is green is a sure fire way of me moving to a different ISP. It seems to be that at 18Gb of usage you are now punished by: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P

Have they not taken on too many clients?

They insist that they have sufficient capacity, but I don't think they do.

Large influx from users jumping ship from mweb causing issues I think.

I'm very happy with my Afrihost service though. (1Mbps Business Uncapped).

This may sound stupid, but does that mean 18.8% is being shaped or you can only reach 18.8% of your download speed regarding normal downloads?

Capture.jpg

So basically my downloads are going to be running at 25% of their usual speed?

Looks like the heavy duty downloaders from MWEB have made themselves a new home at Afrihost.Of course the recent price reductions in the capped accounts can't be ignored either.

Pure speculation on my part mind you.......

I am having issues as well. I have used 8.5GB to date, most of that going into a Windows update.

At first I thought it is a Telkom issue, now I see this. Makes me wonder if I am not being throtled...

If you can't accept the shaping then you should be on the business account or a capped account.

It's not the point, it hasn't been like this before so it's obviously a policy shift from AH

I understand why you're dissatisfied. There is definitely an issue at AH (possibly over-subscription?). I was suggesting that if you're really fed up with the shaping, the capped and business accounts truly are unshaped 24/7.

Remember the guys at Axxess had the same problem for a while, getting shaped to hell for low usage.

Reckon Afrihost is running into IPC issues again. As much as they tell us it's fine, if their network could handle demand they wouldnt shape everyone so bad.

Afrihost claim there is enough capacity, but need to shape everyone to manage it. These two statements conflict, enough capacity wouldn't require shaping.

Furthermore, the recent high latency at the IPC hop means that demand outpaces the speed their shaper works. I think it's becoming clear that there is not enough capacity to accommodate daytime clients.

Hi einameteish, and everyone else on this thread :)
Sorry I'm only jumping in here now.

While latency is definitely a valid concern - and something that seems to have returned this morning, our team are working on this to the absolute best of their ability.
Regarding the shaping (latency issues barred here) we have noted an improvement over the last few days. The trend is still continuing, again latency barred as this is a separate issue, so improvements are on the way.

I'm on a capped account and my speeds including latency this morning is really bad. Local ping to a Durban server was like +400ms. And I haven't even used a quarter of my cap yet.

We did see a latency spike this morning, our network is normalising so things should return to normal really soon.
