Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Yeah in the last 10 days I've managed to download 40GB on my 1M line which is what I normally used to manage in a month on my Mweb account. Very very happy.

People that don't schedule their torrents to run from something like 23:00-07:00 are just damn silly.

Logged into ClientZone to check out my MiFi usage and saw that my account that I cancelled last week and haven't downloaded anything on is being shaped to 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P.

Hopefully they can sort out whatever is going on so I can move back. I'm gonna miss the ClientZone.

Maby all this high demand on the Afrihost network can be the result of the school holidays ?

The most blatantly obvious reason which eluded us all...oh my hat. Completely forgot that so many teens are home on the net 24/7 now.

Well spotted sir.

OK, have just finished a 300 Mb http download which took 6.5 hr on a 1Mbs line and have now tried another one from a different server and all I can get is 22KB/s download. Is this what I can expect from Afrihost from now on or is someone there going to do something about this? Changing to a capped account and trying the same download gets 110 KB/s. I don't mind a bit of shaping but this is ridiculous. You are charging me for a 1MBs service and all I get is 25 KB/s??? The client zone shows downloads shaped at 25% - does this mean I should get 75% of my line speed and thus be downloading at around 80KB/s (a long way from the 25KB/s I am getting) or does it mean I should be getting 25% of my line speed and thus be downloading at around 25KB/s?
On your website you are showing someone who downloaded 300Gb on a 1Mbs line in one month - can anyone tell me how you can do that at 25KB/s??? OK, it might be a bit faster at night but that still won't make up for the slow daytime speeds. It has been dead slow since I got up this morning (6am) and was dead slow last night when I gave up at 10pm so when exactly is the fast bit??
Afrihost I want an answer on this.

I'm sorry that the downloads are slow, but could you perhaps try the same download tonight and have it scheduled to download at midnight?

Mine have dropped from 15kb/s to 10kb/s on a 4meg line (2% of capacity!!)! Be thankful for over 20 on a 1meg line! :P

Which protocol is running at this speed? Torrents?
Keep us posted on the realtime services and gaming latency tonight :)

Will do and let you know but it is kind of immaterial. A bit of shaping during the day is acceptable but not 20KB/s downloads, which takes me back to my original question - is this what I can expect?
Also, why does this download fly on a capped account?
And by the way, on a 1Mbs line 70 - 80 KB/s is slow, I don't think there is even a word for 20 KB/s!

It's really hard to give an exact answer of "you can expect to experience x going forward"
Shaping is/ can be implemented anytime during peak hours to enable realtime services to have priority and stay unshaped.

I concur, last 2 school holidays have resulted in no issues. Since the MTN move got up and running correctly till just the last week, has run over a couple holidays, so can't put blame on that.

This is the shortest holiday - maby alot of people dont see it worth going away for the holiday ?

Afriman

I've had to update my UnoTelly IP settings 4 times in the last 36 hours. Any ideas why? I've never had to do that prior to the current problems with your network?

You're not being asked for an exact answer; you're being asked whether Afrihost has the honest intention of working towards restoring experience to, and maintaining it at, what it was a week or two ago. That's all, really...

This may be caused by your line dropping and having to re-authenticate on our end, causing a new IP to be released.
Drop me a PM and I'll take a look at this if you'd like :)

I think both AfriMan and myself has said that we're working on this, the demand we're seeing is higher than we'd like to be seeing.

Holy crapsticles. I have only done 66.5g for the month on a 4mb line and I am being shaped to death. Did Mweb take over ?

This is set to improve as soon as the network demand drops.
Remember that shaping doesn't look at account specific usage but rather our overall network performance. Realtime services are also not affected :) -J

Reset router 4 days ago when I moved it to another room, doesn't seem to have dropped since then?

Also, Netflix seems to be crawling along at my shaped % speeds. Isn't streaming video supposed to be prioritised?
