Also having the **** shaped out of me at the moment. In all my time with Afrihost (IS backbone) I never had this bull**** and I was downloading more than what I am now.

18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P at the moment.

Why market your services so aggressively if it is going to cause existing customers to just leave anyways.

We're really sorry that we've let you down here :(
The shaping isn't ideal at all, and we fully get that. While your non-realtime services are shaped, realtime shouldn't be touched at all.

Let's see how things run tonight/ tomorrow and see if things improve. We've noted a trend where a little less shaping is being implemented.

To be honest these responses are becoming very generic. Hopefully we get the old Afrihost back soon.

While real-time "should not be touched", it certainly is.
I am speaking of a time when my Telkom line was still synching fine at 10Mb with no issues.
Youtube still buffers....BADLY.....

I don't believe that real-time is unshaped on your network at all. Youtube is still affected, no matter whether I am shaped or not. Browsing does not seem to be an issue.

I don't think they're generic - we're just getting the info out there. The improvements are happening slowly but surely, so let's see how things go.

Please PM me with your info on this, realtime services aren't touched - our network has been setup specifically for this. If this isn't the case for you I'd really like to see why this isn't the case.

Thanks Afriguy.

Cant help but wonder?

I'm really not sure what happened here, or why the incorrect info was conveyed here. But we are handling this internally and chatting to the guys about it.
I can assure you that there are no capacity issues.

I can assure you that there are no capacity issues.

Pull the other one, it's got bells on it.

Seriously, AfriGuy, that's obfuscated doublespeak. It's pretty obvious both you and AfriMan have been given a mandate to come here and do some hardcore PR work, amongst other responsibilities. Please don't dispute that because that would be insulting my intelligence.

If there is enough capacity, why are services shaped into the ground? "We shape in real-time depending on network load to give everyone on the network a satisfactory Internet experience," is the likely reply.

Thus implying that if the shaping was relaxed to early September amounts, then not everyone would have a satisfactory Internet experience.

Thus implying your network is currently unable to provide your subscribers with a satisfactory Internet experience similar to what they were receiving in early September.

Thus implying, by proxy, that your network lacks capacity i.e your network cannot handle the number of subscribers and their bandwidth needs.

I don't know how to put it more succinctly than that.

To assure us there are no capacity issues, prove it. Give us some figures. How much capacity is left over after we are all shaped? It's time to start backing up these extraordinary claims with extraordinary evidence. Because I can assure you there are capacity issues!

It's been covered a few times in this thread.
We aren't on MyBB to just run PR work - we're here to help and convey messages to everyone.

And no, there aren't any capacity issues. I can't provide you with the numbers as this is for internal uses only. The shaping is being applied so we can run realtime services on an unshaped level. Just because we're shaping heavier than we'd like cannot immediately point to a capacity issue. If we had to unshape our Home Uncapped accounts the contention for P2P and other resource intensive protocols would simply bring the network to it's knees.

Hi AfriGuy,

I just wanted to ask, why am I being shaped for 15gb so far? My projected usage is 60gb.. On a 4mb uncapped that is nothing! I moved from MWEB because I wanted a better service.. I never got shaped on MWEB 4mbps doing 120gb a month. I'm really not happy, first week and I'm already considering canceling....

Shaping works dynamically, and looks at the overall network usage and projected usage stats.
We are seeing trends that suggest slightly lower usage which should ease the shaping.

I feel sorry for the pre-Mweb abuser migration users of AfriHost. I hope they upgrade or kick off the abusers soon.

I don't really mind their shaping. I'm never at home to download during the day and I schedule my Downloads late night. When I wake up, it's done, so I got no issues.

My real time services run perfectly so that's no complaints.

:)

Want to move to Afrihost, but a bit sketchy now. Some of my colleagues have also been complaining about speed.
