Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Something's happened! Performance during the day today, and this evening, is much better than I've seen in the last 2 weeks. Getting reasonable speeds (Jhb area).

We're seeing less usage and we've been able to open up shaping a lot more - which is what we've been predicting (though we'd hoped it would be a lot quicker than it has). We're seeing a continuous improvement, which is awesome.

Please, though, we'd really like to see more people scheduling torrents and downloads overnight. This will free up capacity to be less shaped during the day and peak times, and will also use our spare capacity overnight, which is pretty considerable. If we are able to use up that bandwidth over a 24 hour cycle, it will be a great motivator to make more improvements to the network - which will just be super awesome for everyone :)

Your second trace route has latency spikes all over the place, especially before you hit our network, thought he first one seems pretty normal. I would guess intermittent congestion on your exchange. We usually see sustained high latency on line faults :(

Tried the 'Fix My Line' option in the Client Zone. I assume thats a port reset?

Anyhow after doing that my packet loss is less, but I still seem to have a bit of latency. Coincidence maybe, i'll keep monitoring.

Thanks.

My speeds are p!ss poor tonight on both my Telkom and Afrihost account.

yes, same here ... 40kb/s max ... shaping policy 75% at the moment... hopefully it gets better after midnight.

too lazy to summarise this PM to afrigirl:

Morning.

Sorry for the issues. I have resynced your line to 8Mbps and I added 4 Gb to your 1GB account. Please test tonight or whenever you can and get back to me.

i did a tweak my line thingy (afrihost now bundles my line). i now sync to the server 10mb.
021 551 ****, milnerton, cape town

DSLAM Results (Telkom Exchange)

7.3dB
Attenuation
21.9dB

all results from about 21h00 to 22h34
all speedtests to saix cape town
all upload speeds consistent at about 0.86mb

on the uncapped 10mb account (********[email protected]):
shaped 75/75 (i have not downloaded anything wince joining afrihost!)
erratic speedtest results ranging from 2mb to about 6.5mb. most results around 3mb. i have just (21h39) done two consecutive speedtests of 8.4mb. i immediately tried a youtube video at 1080p and got a throughput of about 0.3mb. follow-up speedtest 7.4mb. youtube immediately 0.4mb. speedtest 7.6mb. different browser youtube highly erratic between 1.5 an 0.1mb (ave about 0.4mb). speedtest 4.2mb.

on the 1GB free account (********@afrihost.co.za):
21h54
speedtest 8.2mb, 7.8mb, 8.1mb. youtube about 3 to 3.5mb (still not fast enough to stream 1080p). speedtest 8.2mb, 8.6mb, 8.1mb. youtube other browser 4mb (no buffering), first browser just over 4mb. both simultaneously: total throughput of under 5mb. speedtest 8.4mb, 8.5mb, 8.2mb.

back to uncapped:
22h17
speedtest 7.8mb, 6.37mb, 6.9mb. youtube 0.3 to 0.4mb. other browser <0.3mb. speedtest 7.9mb, 6.0mb, 8.3mb. youtube <0.2mb.

clearly this there is something wrong with your realtime streaming management on the uncapped product.

I think ADSL in general is under severe strain. Don't know how they're going to sort it out. Suppose it will get worse before it gets better.

The "fix my line" does resync the line. As AfriMan said, it might be an exchange issue. We'll need a traceroute to see where the latency gets introduced. Keep monitoring and message us if the issue persists.

"Shaping Policy: No Shaping Applied"

but still get slow streaming speeds :( (netflix cant hold 480p on a 4meg)

There might be another issue. Please send a private message with your username and I can find out if everything is ok on your line.

I hope it gets better sooner. Message us if you have any problems.

Sorry for the troubles yesterday. We were unshaping after midnight.

But nothing is shown on the Afrihost noticeboard.

Is this because it only affects Mweb or would this issue also affect Afrihost users?

We don't list Telkom outages on our noticeboard just yet :(

Definitely improvement in shaping. On 102GB usage so far this month and no/less shaping for most of the day.

That's really good news, we're starting to see more and more positive comments starting to come through on the thread :) The trend seems to be continuing of slightly lower traffic patterns.

why am I not shaped now on my home product, when I am not home..., but in the evenings when I am home trying to use my home account at 10pm I cant even game or load web pages, I dont care about p2p then, it can be dead after hours for all I care, I just need everything to be as good as it was 2 months ago...

Shaping can continuously change throughout the day depending on the network load in your particular region. You may see your account become shaped the later it gets in the morning when more clients connect.
Are you having issues with your realtime services after hours?
