yep also in the IT industry.

day 9 of the 24/7 shaping 18.8% http and 6.25% p2p carries on.
Downloading at dialup speeds is awesome.

Week 3, a few hours ago it was it its best 75%/75%, but now right back to "normal" 18.8%/6.25%
i say normal because this feels like the new normal, and i am a new customer who never really had the opportunity to experience Afrihost network

I'm confused with regards to the shaping. Wondering about the effectiveness.

I've had one eye on my shaping from the office, on my home account, on Clientzone. Now, data used has basically stood still, but the shaping has increased through the day. Started at unshaped, went to 75/75 at about 9, 50/50 at about 11ish, and I am now on 25/6.25

The reason I am posting this is I am not sure what the use is of severely shaping my line. Especially shaping http traffic. And what I've found is that the shaping will only relax very late. This totally sours my internet experience.

I'll have a look for the rest of the day, but I'd expect the shaping to start, and stay constant, from 07:00 to 18:00, and then relax, but that is not what I am seeing. I am not seeing this improvement that is constantly mentioned, even though I start each day with hope as shaping only starts at 9. And I have also, repeatedly, found Youtube to be slow, especially from mobile devices.

As stated by others, a statement, other than it still falls within our AUP and hoping for the best, with regards as to if something is going to be done, would be appreciated. Something like negotiating shaping. I'll set my http and p2p shaping at 6.25 from 8 - 5, if I could negotiate it to at least 75/75 from 17:00, and unshaped from 10, or something like that.

I'm really sorry about this :( The shaping isn't ideal, and trust me - we really don't like having it implemented on this level either.
What's your after hours performance looking like?

Spent most of the day at 75/75 (fine), with a drop to 50/50 'round lunch (yucky, but still acceptable)... Now though, again when one would expect traffic to start winding down, it's at 25/12.5. Just as I allow myself to start harbouring a wee bit of hope. :(

i dont really have a problem with real-time services, but my connection is shaped 24/7, from what i can see its about 80% of the time on 18.8%/6.25% and this after hours unfortunately. I haven't seen those 3 magic words "no shaping applied" for a very long time now
netflix and streaming are great, for me atleast. But i would like to download something now and again

Hi manfromthesouth22

Our shaping is working, it's just a bit heavier than what we'd like to see though.
Shaping also may increase during the day the busier our network gets, it'll also sometimes take your projected usage into account. We cannot manually apply shaping to one specific account as this is done on a per IPC region, across the board setting (most of which is fully automated at this stage)

While Home Uncapped accounts are subjected to shaping, we'll never throttle and keep your realtime services on an unshaped level, as well as only shaping the smallest amount of clients at any time.

I've followed this thread, and I've deducted as much, but are you then telling me it is absolutely necessary to shape me into the ground after business hours? It is the only conclusion I can make. And if this is true, I'll have to move, as I can only conclude that your network is overloaded. Especially if services that are listed as real time I experience as slow, eg Youtube.

On another note, when I signed our office up for Business Uncapped, I can remember it said we will never be shaped during business hours, but may be de-prioritised after hours. Now it seems it has changed to fully unshaped. Doesn't this further degrade the home-uncapped package?

It's absolutely not necessary to shape you after hours. I also see that you're seeing streaming on YouTube being affected - this is something that I'd want to look into further.
Regarding our Business Uncapped accounts, this may have been the case on our previous network - however as it stands today, Business Uncapped accounts are 100% unshaped, 24/7.

home users forced to go to business accounts just to get a better experience :( not cool

Not at all. We aren't pushing any users over to our Business accounts.
Again guys - we don't like the amount of shaping that's being applied but improvements are being seen though.

I'm really sorry for any troubles the shaping is causing. We have the capacity but we have to implement the shaping at some point- usually when the network is under pressure. We are trying to look at a long term solution.

If you had enough capacity you wouldn't have to shape so heavily. Oh, and a long term solution is upgrading capacity. Downloaded 18 gigs this month and I'm being heavily shaped. So if I continue at my current rate I'll download 70 gigs and be shaped for most of the month. Thats ridiculous. I know from experience that I have to wait another 7 and a half hours before shaping will go away. Sort this out Afrihost

This isn't a capacity issue, it's been covered a few times in this thread. Have a look at my posts from earlier :)

We're constantly monitoring our network, and if capacity would be an issue we'd upgrade. Shaping is done to make sure that realtime runs at the best possible speeds, and an overall experience is achieved using our network.

What are your current shaping stats like at the moment?

Maybe not directly, no. But the amount of shaping is forcing us to go there. There is no other alternative?? And no hope in sight for the home uncapped accounts either. I would love to save R100 a month again and move back onto the home uncapped account. but I cannot handle the shaping.

25% HTTP and 6.5% P2P, in other words don't download HD episodes.

It's not an ideal situation, we fully admit that. We've mentioned it numerous times. A lot of users today have been unshaped, far better than any other previous weeks.
Home Uncapped accounts are subjected to shaping, and while it's still heavier than what we'd like to see - have a read on some of the comments on this thread - they're getting better.

To touch on this quickly, our team are requesting additional info and feedback from Telkom regarding your line fault.

Great man, thanks for the update :) Appreciate it
