Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

???

@Afriman, please answer me 2 things, my MWEB account can boost above linespeed, you have said prior (on another thread) it is very strict. your 4Mbps account seems to be unable to reach 4Mbps, e.g. any line performs at 80%. MWEB on 5024 (yes, a telkom line is not 5120) reaches 4 - 4.1Mbps. The afrihost capped on the same line has the same result but my afrihost uncapped account only reaches 3.6??? this is confusing. I realize that over performing with the MWEB account will get me closer to threshold sooner, including yours I presume. The client zone still claims I am unshaped, my estimated monthly usage is 260GB, yet clearly shaped yesterday but thats another story. I think my only alternative here is to gt the MWEB 10Mb AI service and stabilize the line to 5 or 6 to stay within the threshold.

#4110 - you skipped my question afriguy

I do get bursts on my uncapped account... Sometimes I go upwards of 8Mbps on a 4Mbps line which according to the Telkom website is only capable of syncing at 1Mbps.

Strange.

Sorry I missed this earlier.

Our Uncapped accounts are rate limited, as are any other ISP's - meaning you'll be limited to the speed of your package as opposed to your line speed.
Saying this though, doesn't mean it'll be an "up to" type service - so if you have an xMbps you should see a result as close to the theoretical limit as absolutely possible.

Please drop me a PM with your account info so I can see where the slow downs are coming from :(

It literally took minutes to open a page yesterday so email options were not an option. You should have everything in your pm's.

I spoke to whoever the afrihost representative on twitter is and they apparently escelated the matter. Haven't heard anything more. Besides them this morning resetting my line and "stabilising" it again... that's all they seem to do and it hasn't solved the problem yet so why would it now... anyways...

This was my reply to the email I got after I logged the ticket online:

Let me just say AGAIN, this is on a 10mbps line bundle!

Thanks for confirming this, I'm still running through my PM's - will follow up with your Twitter team and see if there's any feedback on this for you.

Thanks for the feedback, see I expect the following, if any account is tested on a line better than the product, how fibre operates, the product should perform at the product speed as the line resistance is no longer in the equation, I have tested on upto 8Mb line and still see no improvement on this account. your capped account keeps improving I will not mention MWEB here as I seem to get around 4 - 6.4Mb why I limited it to the 5Mb line for a fair test.

I will PM my details shortly. I am still not keen on staying as I feel you took on all MWEBs abusers. You huys where exactly what they where looking for and now that 3% is your 3% that's killing your network. its a small quantity of bandwidth hungry guys so sign ups is not significantly more but the usage is tremendous, not to mention the added afrihost mobile (if using your capacity) or is it an APN with its own capacity. I can see myself staying as I saw how quickly they took your network down. If MWEB kept it up for so long and you guys where down in a month. MWEB is surely better

@AfriGuy

Are there any regions affected more than others since its different IPC's ?
Sure you guys will sort it out eventually, was wondering when this would hit after MWeb started their throttling.

Think people really need to realize that you cant just pick up the phone and say "give me more" and 5 mins later its done.

Thanks for that, Telkom also says only 1Mb for me, I had a solid 10Mb connection, unfortunately after a month at 1Kb and the cable to the pole and my jack replaced I only get 9.5Mb, its unstable so I need to stabilize at 8, pity there is no 9 from telkom

I moved to Afrihost from Mweb and wow how bad idea that was
I have 10mbs account. I am been shaped to death on, lucky if I can download at 70kbs. If I swap to Telkom Capped account, I get 10mbs. Shaping yes but 70kbs is just pathetic

Been very poor for me too recently, anything involving streaming is an absolute fail. 'Pure internet joy'...I think not!

Frankly if your network is not working as expected you should not have your network status set to 'fully operational'. It irks me every time I see that when there is evidently a problem.

I am gonna get me a trial account if the situation gets any worse, I suggest you try it, they only have 4Mb tops though but should be worth it

Yoh... Hope you are still in school?? Grade 5 maybe?

agreed, my downloads finish over night, but sometimes I want to grab a file right now, hence the reason I am paying for a 10mb account and not a 1mb account

Wow I can not understand how people are giving Afrihost this much rope. people cancelled mweb in droves for just threatening to throttle even before they throttled. I am one of them but now I am homeless as I sure as hell will not sign up for Afrihost uncapped. The way I see this is that there is a thin line between throttle and shaping. As mentioned before My last month @ mweb on a 4MB line I downloaded 423 gig. Normally I don't use that much but I wanted to test Mweb to see when they will start to Throttle my acc. Maby I should have given them the benefit. But because of principle I still went.

Will keep an eye out on my inbox. I'm still going through a few older PMs but I'll get there :)
We haven't seen any marked increase in sign ups though - so it's really hard to see this as a reason for our increased demand.

Yes, the JHB region is seeing heavier shaping than DBN/ CPT.

Thank you, as you can see that trace route looks horrible... or am i wrong... ai... I am not asking for full 10mbps 24/7 just not 4 or 2 mbps speeds... I pay for the premium as that is what I want.

I am not blaming afrihost at all and I am sorry if it seams that way, I am just frustrated as no one has been able to help me solve the problem... my line just keeps being reset and synced and this and that but it never helps... in fact last night after all this I got a speed test with a nice result of 0.79 mbps on my 10mbps account, that's less than a tenth...

If someone can at least tell me what the problem is and give me some kind of timeline then it would be very much appreciated.

The traceroute isn't looking great, I do agree with you here.
I'll do my best, get our best people on this so we can see a resolution for you.

Well it does seem that MWEBs guys went to all the ISPs as they are all seeing a pinch, so not as much as you expected, MWEB seems though seems wonderful, you just have to be more conscious that you must not impact the other customers or you use a package better than your line.

I got all my friends on a 1Mb line to use a 2 or 4Mb account. I used 300GB on my MWEB account no throttle as the realistic limit for a 1Mb is 300GB its cheaper to use this on the 1Mb line than what it costs for a unshaped 1Mb. True it should be shaped, true it wont give you better speed. but you surely you can use more data.

I am looking at setting up my wife to use streaming for TV as opposed to DSTV as it will still be cheaper using a 10Mb connection on a 4Mb line. A 4Mb premium 800 + Dstv 700 @ 1500 or uncapped 10Mb AI from MWEB with a 4 or 5Mb line @1359, much better. now what have you, an account that can barely stream 360p. I saw this when I started, i refused to belive it. I should have used the cooling off period. this is not the account I want to use as I am starting to get ADSL in my own house but I used the account I sent you to benchmark.

I cannot believe that JHB is heavier as I am in CT and it is bad, then again I must feel sorry for JHB then if that realy is the case.

Please allow that account to go without the notice so it may too go back to MWEB. at least you can free up some capacity you so desperately need
