Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

surely overselling would be the practice of selling more connectivity that your planned (and if presented presented) contention ratios allow for. On an uncapped account that really should be a practice of taking the total sold and comparing it as a ratio to the capacity at the weakest effective point.

IIRC the old discarded ADSL regulations work on a 20:1 basis which means there is definitely not an overselling at play but is it possible for Afrihost to have a sort of general-ish contention ratios that AH aims to keep its home products at - based on the different costs I am aware of I reckon the aim is about 12:1

High demand and overselling are entirely different. We are not overselling on our network, the higher demand is seeing an increase in traffic on our network. In order to curb this and keep realtime services running optimally.

High demand 24/7 for weeks on end and shaping on a sunday = OVERSOLD

You know what... After reading through all the forum posts... It seems that all of the uncapped ISP's seem to be struggling. Yes we can all logically point to the fact that a lot of upset MWEB customers left and joined other ISP's but the reality of the matter is that - More and more people are moving over to uncapped services in South Africa because of streaming demands, smart phone demands etc.. With this in light the only way ISP's could still deliver the same uncapped experience in terms of the amount downloaded etc would be if Telkom reduced the price of IPC accordingly (price per Gb that the ISP's pay) - Which they have not done - In that its only logical the ISP's are going to have to use smarter bandwidth management processes and unfortunatley shape and throttle to secure that everyone on their network gets a fair share of the pie. Or... As I noticed with AH and MWEB.. People upgrade their packages and pay more ;P bwehehe - Through it all - The common enemy here is Telkom. We need to start a thread where all the users here on the MyBB community take on Telkom to reduce IPC prices and to introduce Naked ADSL and stop bitching about this company throttling and that company shaping because at the end of the day Shaping and Throttling is going to stay unless IPC pricing comes down.

I also just want to send a massive thank you to both the MWEB and AH representatives - Both have been very supportive and helpful so thank you :) I can only imagine how tough the past month has been for them with all the queries and so forth. But I do trust that things will get better - Even if Gian is forced to make some drastic decisions........

Farting against thunder

Well your shaping at 18:30pm has resulted that I've had to resort to using my Vodacom 3G router to download updates for my phone as they keep failing on my 10Mb ADSL line cause it's too slow to keep the download active. GG

The update was a whoping 60MB.

So your retarded shaping policy won't allow me to download 60MB to my phone but I can stream full 1080p HD at over 4Mbps, great policy that.

We still do believe that you're getting the best possible experience under the circumstances. I'm also following up with your PM to see what can be done here. Cape Town shouldn't be seeing as much shaping as JHB is currently experiencing - our graphs show this.

Let's chat via PM and come to a resolution there :)

Still waiting to find out if your 3g uses your capacity or its own capacity

It's setup like that because streaming uses less network resources compared to downloading. Was this download run on our ADSL or Mobile product?

Streaming @ 4Mbps = downloading @ 4Mbps, streaming the same amount of data as downloading it over the same amount of time will consume an equal amount of bandwidth. I don't mind having my downloads shaped, but 20kB/s on a 10Mb account is just retarded.

I attempted to download it with my ADSL account but it kept timing out cause I'm currently getting around 20kB/s on my ADSL, so I resorted to downloading it with my Vodacom 3G

A network of this size looks at it differently. Generally downloads can come from multiple sources, opening multiple threads - making the network busier. The two protocols are quite different :)

So single threaded http downloads work like torrents now?

Don't you recall? We established weeks ago that Youtube is the most important thing on the Internet, and access to it needs to be protected at the cost of everything else. Who gives a **** if it takes you 8 hours to download a driver; at least you can watch The Annoying Orange while you wait.

A stream runs ahead of the video, once its finished streaming you still watch the video for some time no data transfer, if you download http you can start the next one simultaneously or as soon as the first one finishes no break in data transfer. Test this, download a few http files simultaneously and your per file won't decrease much, I found this. Weird for a while till I understood the dynamics

sorry afriguy but you gave little detail and will confuse ppl

Nope :) By sources I meant mirrors, sorry about the confusion.
Anyway, the two do work differently with downloads using more resources as opposed to streaming.

Streaming also uses highly optimised protocols which don't put too much strain on the network.

As per our PM we're taking this further with Telkom.

Streaming doesn't always equal YouTube :) And your other realtime services are still able to be used.

The Annoying Orange is buffering on a 10Mb line. So we're in the same boat.
