and get IPConnect capacity in PE
and give more money to charity
and buy loyal customers (say after 24 months) a jet pack - they are licensing them in NZ

but yes in reality it isn't actually possible for Afrihost to give a better deal at the moment

I dunno, I'm thinking about whether we could give client's jet packs without getting sued ;)

Have had extremely "laggy" response the past day or so, never experienced it before, even with downloads @ 250KB/s

Linden exchange, download running in background @ ~100KB/s, 3783 kbps sync speed, 4 meg uncapped line

Current shaping status: No Shaping Applied

But general browsing experience feels slow. Have also rebooted PC and router. Things are better since I changed to Google DNS servers from the ISP auto supplied ones...

That looks like congestion on your exchange. Crazy latency on the 2nd hop, which is before you reach our network :(

Just signed up this afternoon. Hell of a first day :/ 4 meg uncapped

Got your PM. Strange that local is perfect and international is slow. We're not having general issues on international at the moment, but we'll have our guys take a look at this ASAP :(

Your second hop is just maddeningly high...that's the link to.your exchange unfortunately.

It could be due to;
a) heavy usage on the exchange, or
b) poor copper and/distance to exchange

What's your router stats look for attenuation and SnR margins?

the reply reminds me of the joke about an angel offering Nelson Mandela the granting of 1 wish for all the peace he has brought. Mandela responded with a magic highway between Joburg and Las Vegas that allows vehicles to travel at the speed of light. The angel replied that he was being silly and that asking God to change the laws of physics was pushing it a little far. Mandela then said well how about one crime free day in South Africa and the angel asked "how many lanes".

After a list of zeroing prices, upping line speeds, building capacity and acting as a catalyst, doing good at a cost to company and something completely ridiculous the only comment is on the completely ridiculous :D. I truly love Afrihost's approach.

*raises hand* just a reminder that I made a post about exactly this. Glad (but also not glad) to see it's not just me.

Edit: Speedtests tonight.
Local (excellent): http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/2257995216.png
International (between the 40 / 60 kb/s range as it has been the last 10 days): http://speedtest.ookla.com/result/2257997179.png

Those are marginally / atrocious, but been borderline since installation years ago.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3931 kbps 555 kbps
Line Attenuation 55.0 db 34.2 db
Noise Margin 7.3 db 8.1 db

Currently suspecting the router. Had to reboot again this morning for data to fly again. Will get a new router this afternoon and try again (Currently running a Netgear DG834GT)

I'm also in Linden; I could post a trace for comparison, but I can't say I've noticed anything as horrid as yours would suggest.

Thats what I been saying but you say all ok!

THERE YOU GO now you can spam the Plugg boards, your complaint is old news behind the times, you are trying to make it look like it happened yesterday, you are a fraudster!

Are you really that dense? Some guy asked about the performance of Afrihost. I told him about the performance of Afrihost based on about a year of experience. Now you're calling me a fraudster? Excuse me, come again? Do you wish to apologise for that?

I have to wonder why you are still with Afrihost if this problem has been with you so long since we're over half way through the year. If I was having poor performance from one ISP (for an extended period or often) and good from another I'd be jumping ship as soon as possible and returning later if need be.

It's pretty simple. For the half year following Afrihost going south, I was supplied with 'alternative' Afrihost accounts that actually worked. After that I've been a combination of ill and out of country, so I haven't really been in the best position to pick a new ISP. Now I'm back, though, and if the Afrihost situation doesn't improve rapidly, of course I'm gonna switch ISP. Anyway, someone asked about the performance of Afrihost, and I told them. Why are you so upset about it?

I see you're battling with your downloads here. Not sure that I have all the information from you though. Are you being shaped on an Uncapped account, and are other services (real time) running at the speeds they should be?

It's not what you guys conside a download, it's an image. You know, like you normally load in a web browser. I posted the Afrihost speed results to counter the stupid "Afrihost don't throttle web browsing" claims.

They don't. If however something else is wrong - which is very possible - then contact Afriman and supply all the needed traceroutes and info and they will sort you out and pin point the problem.

NO network is without issues - we don't live in a perfect world. Just work with the support guys to help them help you to get back to a great internet experience.

And to substantiate my point - a few weeks ago the shaping policy was quite stringent during business hours - 12.5% P2P / 25% Download - I tested this and their claim that no real time protocols get's shaped. True as nuts my downloads on HTTP and P2P were shaped. Yet my streaming from youtube and browsing remained as fast as ever.

So, a little update on just how fast Afrihost can go. I tried starting 8 concurrent downloads and my download speed peaked at 80kB/s. That's the fastest I've seen Afrihost go in a while, but it did take a lot of concurrent downloads to get there. Normally I get about 20-25kB/s with a single download.

Yet here I am dl'ing at a full 200Kb/s on my 2MB account...

What are you downloading, where are you downloading from, have you contacted support and given them all the details?

I'm not taking issue with you posting you are experiencing problems - hell that's what this thread is here for after all - but now take it once step further and send Afriman / Afriguy / Afrigirl your username and a full breakdown of the issues with troubleshooting you have done and they WILL help to sort you out.

Your attenuation is very high and your SnR really border lining.

See below for a table of stats and performance correlation;

SNR:

6dB or below is very bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems
7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions
11dB-20dB is good with little or no sync problems
20dB-28dB is excellent
29dB or above is outstanding

Attenuation:

20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues

I envy you :)

Doesn't really matter. I never get remotely good speeds no matter what. Can be a simple picture from Imgur that takes half a minute to load, it can be a small-ish ISO file that would take almost 3 hours to download without using a concurrent downloader or anything else for that matter. The thing I just managed to download in a little under an hour with 8 threads is http://caesar.acc.umu.se/debian-cd/7.1.0/amd64/iso-cd/debian-7.1.0-amd64-netinst.iso - a 222MB file.

I'm just very afraid that Afrihost will involve Telkom in it somehow. It's not more than 2 months ago that Telkom (apparently asked to by Afrihost) decided to "fix" my ADSL line, which resulted in an internet connection that couldn't stay online for more than a few minutes at a time for a week before it got just semi-fixed. A slow internet connection is after all better than no internet connection at all.

Afriman should know me well by now, though. I sometimes feel he's being overworked with just the messages he's getting from me.
