I don't think any time soon - it's mostly due to logistical concerns about the amount of bandwidth that can be consumed. The idea behind Uncapped is not to saturate your connection 24/7 or Uncapped becomes unviable for any ISP. Once you have multiple connections, this becomes a lot more possible and it's not going to be too good for the network :(

Agreed, except that concurrent connection doesn't mean that you have to saturate the network.

Am currently with an IS based ISP and the system works quite well - basically shared b/w between two connections - home & office - so I never exceed 4 meg allowable (my contract speed) overall.

It's probably the only reason keeping me from moving my main account over to AH since I quite like the AH attitude, your website is awesome and your price reasonable.

Maybe try removing and recreating the WiFi settings. Sometimes that helps :(

How would I go about doing that?

It does not even show up on my pc (which is connected with an ethernet cable to the router) where it would normally have showed up as part of our home network.
 
And after being a happy Afrihost customer on a 10MB uncapped for 2 months yesterday I hired a 40MB uncapped line, now the beautiful part is that I'm getting 2-4MB with the Afrihost account and 32MB speeds on any other provider (including the WebAfrica account that Afrihost gave me to test), I'm obviously getting shapped to death and instead of someone answering me if upgrading for the business account (that by the website can't be shapped) would solve the problem, I just get bull**** excuses (that after 3 hours on the phone and waiting 6 hours on a ticket I opened on the website plus flooding the facebook with messages)

Guess I will just cancel and get an WebAfrica account, seems like they at least work
 
I'm out of turbocharges this month. Guess I'll try finish my torrents next month when I get some more.

I could only do 400 megs from 00h00 until 07h00. Waste of time & electricity.
 
I'm going to sound like a douche here but if you can afford an uncapped 4Meg+ account and you bitch about shaping, surely you can fork out R100 extra for the business option? That's less than 2 King Steer burgers & chips.

We don't really work with these kind of stats, becuase they are essentially different from second to second and don't really add any meaningful input to managing the network (in our opinion) :(

Wow... that's the first time I've heard that said. I was told by Cybersmart that their contention ratios are 15:1 on their home uncapped and 5:1 on business uncapped. Is there a top end that Afrihost commit to? So your business uncapped accounts have the same contention ration as the home uncapped accounts?

I take it to mean that contention ratios constantly change depending on the number of the subscribers using the available bandwidth at any given time.

I think it's rather bold of Cybersmart to advertise contention ratios that is unless they can guarantee it.
 
Ok wtf, I can't even stay connected now! Afrifail today, was on hold for 12 minutes and then decided to kill the call

With IS you share your connection, so each gets a max of 2Mbps (as I understand from when we used their backbone). We were never very happy with that, as we feel you should always get your line potential - especially for real time services.

Its' something that comes up often, and we are always looking at ways we can make something like this work practically :)

There should be a WiFi network setting somewhere in the router config settings. But then not getting service over LAN indicated this may not be the issue. However, with regard to wifi vs LAN, remember that you're still sharing a connection. If you saturate the line with downloads on the PC - that could affect browsing and other realtime services.

Just one correction - the two connections contend, so if one is pulling at 3, the other gets one; if the one is idle (as in my case, at night the work connection is idle), then the other one get's full potential - or any combination in between.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye out.

What I mean is that how can we guarantee how many users will be connected at any point in time and how much bandwidth they demand at any point in time? We'd rather avoid such claims - becuase it's actually pretty difficult to substantiate your actual contention ratio even at one specific point in time. And then that figure would be meaningless 5 minutes later.

We prefer to just avoid the contention ratio stats altogether as we don't believe they are truly helpful to clients.

In the interest of my own sanity, having grown tired of notpologies and vacuous explanations, I've given this thread a bit of a wide berth the last few days. So, any concrete details yet as to when we might start seeing an improvement? It's now, what, nearing 6 weeks since iOS7-day and 18.8/6.25 shaping has been established as the daytime norm, with each weekend seeing progressively more shaping than the prior one.

Is this set to ever get better, or will I need to start shaping my debit orders?

I think we are missing the issue here, as I said in a previous post we were NOT running ANY downloads or torrents at the time. This was a straight up case of pages just not loading properly on her laptop over wifi.

My gf was trying to browse Zando on her laptop over wifi (which was not working out while it was running fine on my pc) and I was waiting for my hard drive to pick up after I plugged it into the router. (it didnt, i got tired of waiting so i went back to plugging it into my pc)
 
I had some, less shaped access early this morning, at least that's something! :)
Hopefully Battlefield 4 and the inevitable updates will be okay.
