Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

34.6GB usage this month and we're on 75%/75% shaping at the moment. Much more manageable!

In the end I managed to find a hole in their throttling setup so I could get semi-decent speeds out of them and managed 350GB in September and October.

Dear jebus. I'm so tired of this guy.

So not only are you a troll who's only purpose here is to cause problems but you're also someone who doesn't understand fair play. It's guys like you who are abusing the system put in place to give us fairly decent experience that cause all the problems in the first place. You also have zero grasp of the difference between shaping and throttling.
What the hell makes you so special that you don't have to follow the rules like the rest of us?

And if you're no longer with Afrihost then why are you still posting in their forum? Go and harass whichever ISP has been lucky enough to inherit you.

And so ends my rant.

Edit: I see that he says that AfriMan terminated his account. Thanks for that AfriMan. At least that's one less abuser screwing it all up for the rest of us.

@AfriMan / Guy / Girl

I'll be moving house in about 2 weeks time. I know now that I can pause my ADSL account for up to 6 months to get back up and running once I've settled in.

However, my line is managed through Afrihost. I have taken a look in Clientzone at the options there and I would just like to know exactly which steps to take.

I'll need to get my line back to Telkom, have them install my line at new place asap and then move the line back to AH afterwards. However I do not want to have any downtime between now and when I move (not sure if I can cancel the line now or if I should wait).

Please guide me through the necessary steps and advise on when cancellation/line moving should be done.

Thanks

Go to ClientZone and cancel the Line product. You'll get three options - Cancel Line, Transfer to Telkom and Relocate Line. The Relocate line also just moves your line back to Telkom, but you can specify a date which you'd prefer for that to happen :)

Sunday night:

4mbps line, 10GB data done for the month = 50% shaping

Monday morning:

4mbps line, 16GB data done for the month = 0% shaping

Could you please explain the thought process behind that, a tad ridiculous and if the prices don't drop to match other ISP's then I think I'm going to move. A bit sick of the shaping for low usage at the moment...

Shaping is not implemented based on your individual usage - as in a punitive measure. We shape only when demand warrants shaping to match our available capacity. We then start shaping clients based on their usage pattern profile - so that we can shape as few clients as possible to achieve the maximum effect.

I see it says it can take up to 5 business days to move back to Telkom. Should I cancel the line a bit earlier than the actual move?

But you said:

So someone who moves 10GB's in a day, will be classified as more aggressive that someone who moved 10GB in a week (presuming they are connected and moving data for the entire period) and therfore shaping the more aggressive user first will bring demand down faster than shaping the second user. However - if demand is high enough, both users could be shaped.

Which implies that the person who downloads more aggressively is penalised doesn't it?

So, here's a question for you: Anyone on uncapped in Jo'burg currently shaped less severely than what has become the daytime normal 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P? If yes, I think you and I need to have a talk over how your system classifies my account...

Lol +1. Upgraded one account to business uncapped and it seems better. Losing packets of data though for some reason since...

It blows me away how people have not yet read or realized that SHAPING IS NOT BOUND TO YOUR USAGE!!!!!!!!!!
It's bound to the load on the network and secondly on your usage! C'mon people! It is possible to have used 0GB for the month and still be shaped if the load on the network is high enough.

I thought that too till AfriMan said this:

Which how I read it, indicates if you are an aggressive user more shaping is applied to you more than someone who doesn't download as much.

You do understand that I'm questioning the severity of the shaping I'm seeing - I saw the same 18.8/6.25 briefly yesterday afternoon - in relation to my light usage right? Right?

You probably wouldn't be quite so blown away if you actually bothered to read what was posted.

I think that's probably best to allow a few extra days - though it should be set to go on your required date :)

A penalty would imply that when you reach a certain amount which we consider abusive, we shape you accordingly, as other ISP's do when they use rolling windows and thresholds. That means whether there is spare capacity or not - that individual user is shaped or throttled until their satisfy the conditions of that policy , e.g. dropping below a certain threshold total at a later stage.

We only shape when demand on the whole network is higher than our available resources - otherwise we don't shape any users that we don't have to :)

Like I said, when the demand is high enough - then we have to shape more users. If that still does not bring demand to acceptable levels (acceptable meaning that which does not induce any latency on the network) then we may have to shape as many users on the network (and potentially all of them) to the absolute maximum to ensure that we can provide the best overall experience to everyone from Capped & Business to Uncapped.

That would be the case under more "normal" circumstances and it's the principle that the system is built on. However with demand far exceeding capacity at times, it's sometimes necessary to shape almost all our Uncapped users on the maximum policy to manage demand. We're doing everything we can to avoid doing this, but at peak times I have seen that this is the case :(

That's not what I asked.

You shouldn't be experiencing packet loss or latency (which generally go together). Have you seen this on an MTR test?

Please drop me a PM :(

Maybe you should drop me a PM and ask in more detail - I'm pretty I answered your question there :(

Nah, dude. I'd prefer discussions to remain visible for everyone's benefit. I'm asking an incredibly simple question: are there people on home uncapped (4mb, if you want to get specific) on your Jo'burg IPC, who are currently shaped less severely than 18.8/6.25? It's a yes/no kind of deal...

If yes, I would then like to drop you a PM with my account name so that you can check whether your classification of my account lines up with my current and historic usage. If no, meaning all Jo'burg home uncapped users are presently shaped to 18.8/6.25 or worse, then so be it. As an ancillary question: how fine is your system's regional differentiation... is it as simple as being on the northern, south-western on eastern IPC, or is it more finely divided up?
