Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Perhaps his IP could be leaked to Afriman? :D
Save everyone a lot of hassle to track him down.

Lol, nice try. Not posting from my ADSL line or my own PC/Laptop, not stupid enough to do that.

Thing is I used to be able to download during the day at decent speed, 300-600Kbps, now downloads fail because they run too slow and when it does work it takes days to download a 1GB patch for a game after having to restart it several times, this is even after hours an issue now.

Tried to download System Center 2012 R2, 7GB, cancelled the download when the estimated time remaining was one month.

We are ALL aware of the issues. New capacity has been ordered to alleviate the problem of the demand. You bypassing the entire system just puts more pressure on it and makes the service more unusable for the rest of us. Not cool.

I think it's a bit sad that you feel the need to register a different account simply to goad and stir, frankly. We know there's strain on all systems, and for you to deem yourself entitled to full speed downloads 24/7 at the cost of everyone else is deplorable.

I hope your cables get stolen.

Why am I allowed to stream 1080p videos but not download a file?

This is because the Home Uncapped accounts are subjected to shaping, bypassing this is violating our AUP. Our team does monitor this quite closely so publicly admitting that you're purposefully bypassing shaping isn't the best idea.

As a few of the guys have mentioned here, we are waiting on additional capacity to be pushed live to ease shaping - but I urge you, if you require and rely on your line speed being available on any protocol there are other methods of doing this. Bypassing the AUP isn't cool and puts other clients at a disadvantage.

Because that's the way our network has been setup, we do have other unshaped options available if that's what you need. Shaping is implemented to allow realtime services to be untouched.

Not quite sure what your intentions are here?

Enough is enough, got a secure VPN service to run my P2P through so I can also join the top abusers list on the webpage.

P2P currently cruising along at 1MB/s

You're doing what?

FAIL. This is abuse, finish en klaar.

FWIW I also abused the system, but without the advantage of running my P2P in a VPN tunnel. If the AUP says you don't use VPN to bypass shaping, then don't do so as you're degrading the service for other, legitimate users.

You shouldve got the business account,

I read these forums and some people just want to rip as much data as possible for as cheap as possible, if they want torrents all day at full speed get the <CENSORED> business account

This. Don't be a cheapskate at the expense of others. Or go to Mweb, they've got some lovely speeds there.

Why am I allowed to stream 1080p videos but not download a file?

Because that is how Afrihost has designed their system to give real time usage a higher priority. Please go to another ISP that does not make that distinction. Try OpenWeb Gold 4mb. It's an amazing package that should suite you well.

Doing what you're doing goes against the whole idea AFrihost has built their network and QoS system around. And is also degrading the service for others :(

(crosspost from another less relevant thread)

I have a 10 mbit Uncapped bundle from Afrihost.

I've downloaded 14.62 GB this month, average of 3.66 GB per day, yet I'm shaped to 12.5% download / 6.25%.

Torrents are at 20kb/sec, Hearthstone keeps on d/c'ing every 20 minutes - it's just totally ludicrous how borked Hearthstone is.

A 10mbit line can, at peak, download ~108 GB a day. So I'm using ~3.39% of that, and I'm getting shaped (in a very significant way) - it just doesn't seem fair.

If, as the Afrihost rep says above, that the volume is too high on the network, then the most logical solution is to get more bandwidth on the underlying MTN network to handle it. The other logical solution is just to disincentivize new customers for a period of time. Surely if you have a finite supply of bandwidth, and you have very very low pricing (i.e. high demand), then you're just making it even worse for your existing customers by allowing more people on the network. I'm not saying you should completely stop new customers from joining, but maybe removing some ludicrous specials might slow down rate of new customers.

AfriHost already ordered more network capacity. This should hopefully be live soon :)

We're currently implementing more shaping than what we'd like to see, this is a result of higher demand that we've seen recently. Additional capacity has already been ordered which should ease a lot of the shaping related queries - we don't have an ETA on this just yet, but I'll have something concrete posted as soon as I can.

A traceroute might indicate something going wrong.
If you don't win drop me a PM and I'll check what you need :) And pass this onto our team for a look into.

Fits his profile:
Only posts in Uncapped AH thread - check
Only posts complaints - check
Seems rather silly - check

Yup, and his profile was only set up today. Wow, what a genius. No way anyone would figure it out.
