Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

How long does it generally take after the line has been successfully migrated that I can test my line via the ClientZone? I am anxious to see if I can actually sync at 10 (or at least 8) :D Currently the test just fails

@Afriman,

Per our previous discussion, it's clear that you guys don't have a concurrent uncapped option - what would be the most cost effective solution for me to have uncapped at one location and capped at the other?

1st location definitely needs 4 meg uncapped but the 2nd location doesn't need more than a 1-2 meg connection and maxes out at about 10 gig per month.

I agree. Afrihost and all ISP's better get ready for the new year. Got a feeling once the new generation of consoles and gaming entertainment kicks off the networks are going to experience a massive increase in traffic. Especially considering digital game downloads on consoles are going to be much bigger and the new upload features.

I'm just waiting for the Telkom upgrades to go through and see what everyone will offer. Really want to change from Mweb to Afrihost but don't want to sit with all this shaping/throttling nonsense all over again come the new year because of the lack of capacity.

Get the business account to avoid shaping, Im sure it will be cheaper than mweb

Would be cool if Windows updates could be exempted too ...

Tranche 3 of updates (after SP1), 490MB

Even with maximum shaping, your realtime services can all achieve full throughput on your line. Are you referring to diminished speeds on torrents or NNTP?

Yes it was on downloads, but 10kb/s at 1:24am. You don't think this is stupid? if I can't download at midnight, when can I?It's become a browsing package.

Anything but port 80 traffic was fried.

I think consoles are actually getting better at streamlining bandwidth consumption as well. The reality is that the high cost of IPC at the moment - and the cost to consumers - means that we're still getting people online with fixed broadband much slower than we'd like. We'd love to have heaps of extra capacity to plan for every eventuality - but that just isn't viable or sustainable. For now, we have to play things very closely and try to be as reactive as possible to changes so that we can keep our clients costs down :(

Bloody Telkom with their IPC cost!!! I know what you mean. Anyways, will keep an eye on you guys. After these upgrades you might get a new customer sooner than you think ;)

It can take up to 14 days, it depends on Telkom. Drop me a PM, I can check your sync for you :)

It's not great - I admit that. But I do think it provides the best overall experience while we wait for the new capacity to be delivered by Telkom.

Could you at least unshape Hearthstone and Dota 2 then? It's one thing that downloads are going so incredibly slow, but games also means that I get very little value from Afrihost.

I'm not sure this is the case. I've tested a capped account at home on a normal 10Mbps line and get max speeds of 8.4Mbps - which is as good as my line has ever done.

What tests have you run to establish this? :(
On my 10Mbps/50gb capped account I am presently getting 8.6Mbps to Johannesburg (I am in CPT) but only 2.54 international. Last night my international was running at 0.6Mbps!! Streaming video is a pain.

I think getting 8.6Mbps shows that you are able to break out of Telkom's network at full speeds. We'd need to see how you international traffic is being routed as well.

Drop me a PM and we'll run some tests so we can see what's up here :(

Gaming gets highest priority on the network, but if you're playing on a server that uses P2P traffic, then you may be affected by shaping. Can you check whether there is any aspect to the servers you are playing on?

Yeah, just waiting on official word from Afrihost on these Telkom upgrades. Will be great to get a 4mb business account at R397 for example.

Last year we got confirmation right before they went live - looks like it will be the same case this time.

If all goes the same though, we are hoping to pass on the free-ness to our clients :)

OS updates should be exempt from shaping - that's why iOS 7 gave our network such a hammering :(

Windows updates aren't unshaped on the network, I have the same issue downloading Windows updates.

Also Windows Phone updates fail because it's shaped into the ground.
