and again it's 10pm in the evening and I'm shaped to 6.25%...
I think you guys seriously need to look into your shaping mechanism - is this really still PEAK hour??

Long time ago I had some experience as an administrator helper and have some knowledge what's going on in channel. From my speed behaviour I realized that you shape in most simplistic, "not smart" way - fixed bandwidth for every kind of users. Normally 100% bandwidth should be used and only when new user come into play, shaping should be adjusted as: reserve more-less optimal bandwidth for your archaic "capped package" (hi, 21-th century!) - they should NOT occupy a whole channel just because it's limited! Their speed should be at the level, enough to spend all their 10 GB during a whole month. And other (uncapped) users should eat rest of bandwidth according to their line speed. And of course we (customers) should never ever experience damn low speed just because you got thousands clients! Think of it as a bakkie - you cannot carry 10 pianos at once - you have to buy more cars! It's requirement for a good service - more important than friendly support.
I hope you ordered big enough bandwidth, because a lot of us were seduced by good prices and now it's time to prove you worth it! You need us, we need you. Good luck, Afrihost!

Got to love the fact you cant watch twitch at 11pm on 480p with a 4mb line....

im on 10mb afrihost business uncapped , cant stream a 480p file from putlocker, usenet struggling to reach 400k and hulu is buffer heaven, but the afrihost site shows all normal, sigh yet another night of sub par performance on the afrihost network

The Twitch issue is not related to Afrihost imho. There are a LOT of threads online about twitch streaming problems. One user on Reddit posted a solution though. Froot also posted a link to it a few pages back. It comes down to you downloading livestreamer and running that via VLC to watch your streams. Went from unwatchable to perfect by using that fix. Just saying.

I know just how feel (i had 4kbs max speed on my 1mb business line since 2pm yesterday), and if you send a support ticket to them you will always get the same reply, your modem/router/filter etc etc must be faulty.. seems its difficult for them to ever admit there is a fault. Now my line is back at 100kbs this morning, glad my router/modem/filters fixed themselves overnight

As per the link below.

Strange, mine was working just dandy.

Oh I know. Just like I know this is a Telkom issue as well. Just so damn frustrating.

We're doing our best to get some answers from Telkom. They're saying it's congestion now - which we've established is not the case. We'll keep pushing for some answers :(

See my PM to you. Got it confirmed that Telkom WILL rate limit the Dslam if they feel that some congestion will be picked up. That way the latencies will remain low. So no...there is not congestion on the dslam...but the threat of congestion is causing their rate limiting to kick in to keep congestion from happening. Quartering my speed.

Have you tried a trial account from another ISP? I think OpenWeb gives out trial accounts, easiest way to troubleshoot.

Hi Fudzy. Been down that road my friend. OpenWeb Gold, Afri capped, Telkom Ti, Mweb. All the same. It's a rate limit being applied by the router at the dslam.

Hello, AfriMan, AfriGuy and other Afri* family! :)
Lately I become Afrihost client and immediately dropped into trouble with low speed. But support guys said they "resolve latency issues" while you say here (as I understood) "we're overloaded and waiting for bandwidth increase". Who I should trust? :)
One more thing: all that cap/uncap/busines/f*kizness - just a way to get more money from the same copper and I don't think it's fair "let's uncapped users suck because business users pay more". WE ALL deserve to get what we paid for! If I chose "unlim 1 Mbit", I pay full amount for real uncapped service with 1Mbit speed. But unlike money, real bytes go way slower than I paid for. It's unfair and package should declare straight: "we shape you till 10% of bandwidth in favor of our fat cats". Next...

Sorry that your first experience with us is not the best of what we can offer. I think both issues apply here - we are currently experiencing a very demand which is putting a strain on our available resources. When that demand is extremely high, we start seeing latency on the network - which we resolve by shaping more aggressively to ensure that we can have premium real time services on all products at all times.

Remember that you never lose your line speed, we only shape the protocols that we feel have the biggest impact on our network, which is torrents and other P2P services mainly and direct downloads to a lesser extent. We never shape real time services so you can still have full use of your line for streaming, gaming, browsing, VoIP and any other real time service.

I'm on a 24/7 shape now. Even set my alarm to 3am this morning and still stuck on the same shaping I had the last 24 hours.

Shaping Policy: 18.8% Download/ 6.25% P2P

Cant remember when last I saw anything different.

Shaping is based entirely on demand and available resources - so we actually have very little input into when and how shaping is applied. It's controlled by how much users demand in realtime and our system reacts accordingly.

I also struggled with youtube last night. Was buffering quite hecticly on my 10 mbps bundle.

Downloads earlier that night was flying though. So not sure what happend later.

Btw. My girlfriend tried to download a private video she has access to on vimeo for two days now and after hours its only on like 0.2%. Any idea why this is?

We do advertise that Uncapped can be shaped, whereas Capped and Business DSL are not. So we can't actually intentionally shape those products - either by contention or design - it's not a question of who pays more but rather making sure that the products we deliver are true to their intended operation.

Again, it's hard to judge our intentions when we're doing our best to deliver the best experience when the network is under strain. We are expecting the additional capacity to come online soon, and I think that will show a much truer reflection of exactly how we envision Uncapped to work. We definitely don't expect a permanently shaped experienced to be the norm - though shaping is a necessary component of Uncapped management.

We've has several posts (and a thread at one point about this). I've done my own testing and can't replicate this - though I believe there is some info on the internet to suggest that this is a known issue with Twitch not upgrading their servers.

Sounds like this may be a throughput issue and not a routing issue. Have you checked if your throughput is normal on your line?

Oh and AfriMan although the real-time services work very good like browsing and streaming, I started a 1.75GB file yesterday afternoon, left it over night and currently it's downloading at 11KB/s still.

Telkom have been working on exchanges in the last few days - so there could be other factors. We should always troubleshoot and determine the actual issue before we send a predefined solution or test schedule. However, over email it's not always easy to have the pertinent details that will immediately highlight the issue. That's why we sometimes need to get as much information as possible like speedtests, ping tests, trace routes so that we can get an overview of what's happening on your line.

I also think it's important to report your individual experience and not talk about the network in general. I still find a lot of people asking if our network is down in a specific area. Our network is a national presence, and the network itself is very, very unlikely to stop performing in a single area or much less an individual household. Unless the entire network is down, slow or misbehaving - it's very unlikely that the network is being unfriendly to an individual client and more likely that individual circumstances like lines, routers or account settings are influencing an individual's experience.

If you were being shaped, or there are any other factors affecting your experience, this may explain it. There could be several reasons for this. I also noticed usage overnight was pretty high overnight - which is also awesome because it means we're using more of our unused capacity at night.

We should have more capacity in the North shortly and we expect that shaping will be a lot more lenient once it's live :)
