I sent a pm to afriguy about this last night, It never used to be like this a few months ago and if you tracert from vodacom 3G it routes locally

The third last IP belongs to Neotel so I believe they use Neotel as an upstream provider

It depends on DNS. If we lookup the domain and it tell us they're somewhere - that's where we go by the shortest possible route. Sounds like they may have done a wobbly on their name servers - hard to say.

This has been my experience to, i can normally download at full speed from Youtube..its only recently (past 3/4 days).

Not downloading, but had a lot of buffering last night. Shaper said I'm not shaped. It started well with a 720p clip not buffering. Then it went pearshaped. I gave up when it started to buffer 144p vids.

Edit: Torrents were going full speed. I had 5 series downloads and all 5 finished in less than 2 hours.

If you're downloading a video and not streaming it - the packet signature will most likely change and it could be shaped. Only if you are being shaped at the time - otherwise not :)

This was my understanding :)

I wasn't shaped when doing the downloading :)

Hi AfriGuy,

I have been stuck on 18%/6% for the last few days.. I don't think its normal, even at midnight or early hours of the morning I'm still being shaped. I think it might be stuck.

Drop me a PM with your details - and let's have a look at your shaping logs :(

As far as I'm aware, if my clientzone says "Shaping Policy: No Shaping Applied" then any downloads should not be shaped.

Im curious as to why you downloading from youtube will be shaped?

:)

Yes, if there is no shaping applied - we only apply QoS for best experience but we won't do any shaping on any protocol until your shaping policy changes :)

Because the packets intercepted are classified as downloads and shaped as necessary

Intercepted sounds very clandestine ;)

We analyse packet signature to determine whether traffic falls into classes that are shaped or not shaped -correct. But we'll only act on that in accordance to the shaping policy you are on. If you're not being shaped - then we won't apply any shaping rules.

It all depends on the packet signature. If the data is recognised as real time - then it wouldn't be. We haven't changed any of the rules so it as it always was. Remember we don't shape by client or protocol, it's the packet header info from the data stream itself.

But the same happens when you tracert with the IP instead the domain name.

If you were torrenting at the same time it may have interfered with your streaming. Although our QoS is designed to give you the best experience - but it will still have an effect :(

Do you suggest I log a support ticket tonight, because for the past 2 days realtime services are really, really, really bad. And no, nothing was running in the background. I'm really getting annoyed again. I upgraded to 10Mb thinking it would be better, and not 4 weeks in, the problems start again. Getting really despondent with AH services.

Looks like we have a problem with authentication at the moment. We're looking to find out exactly where the problem lies to get this sorted out urgently.

Please don't reboot your router until we have resolved this!

Sorry for the inconvenience - we've already got all our top people on this :(

OOH OOH OOH

Completely missed it

Nope, I always switch torrents off when youtubing. Could be congestion at the exchange, I did not check. Just switched my torrents back on, it went to full speed and I went to bed.

Torrents will be less affected by latency than real time streaming - so it could be. Please keep us posted so we can try to figure this out :(
