Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Definitely nothing being limited or enforced on our side. I don't see anything unusual in the Cape monitoring a sudden change would definitely stand out at around midnight for our team that monitors the network.

Does turbocharging do anything, just out of interest?

Good idea! Will try a turbocharge next time it happens.

Also - the speeds are universal across all types of traffic. Will give that TC a go tonight (if it happens again)

Thx Afriman!

Hey guys,

I'm looking at getting an uncapped line in the not too distant future. How is the speed to quality ratio of the Afrihost 1Mb line?

I would use it for downloads, browsing and Youtube videos every so often... Currently using Afrihost Mobile, so I would hope that their ADSL packages can at least match the mobile speeds?

Your feedback would be appreciated.

Afrihost is just awesome. Service, Guarantees, Friendliness, Products, Price....I could go on and on.

Oh and accessibility and ease of use.

I am called the "Afrihost Preacher" within my family/friends/work group.

So you cant go wrong with Afrihost.

Your downloads will be hit by shaping. Browsing and YouTube will be awesome!! But their support is excellent and the product is great too, bar the shaping.. But this should also ease up a bit next year, after the capacity increase.

That is the sentiment I get from the company, yes :)

Thanks for the feedback, appreciate it.

How bad is the shaping? I'm not a heavy downloader, 20-30Gb a month max. I suppose a capped package makes more sense, so I'll take a look at those as well (I do like the option of being able to access it via WiFi should I be anywhere). But that if I need to really to have an uncapped line, I would prefer that option.

Also, thanks for the feedback. Appreciate it.

Shaping seems to be around 25% Download Speeds / 6.5% P2P Download. So this means that your HTTP downloads will only run at 25% of your line capacity, if you are on a 1mb line this will be 25kb/s. And torrents will download at 6.5%, which is 6.5kb/s

So your stuff will download, just not in a hurry :)

I'm not saying that - just trying to determine what could be different. Like I said - testing 100% fine on our side and there are definitely no issues with this in terms of complaints.

Will reply to your PM ASAP :(

I removed the unodns and I am still having the same issue. Its getting really frustrating now as I do not know why https sites are blocked.
Tried with my laptop same issue, tried wifi using android phone same thing. I cannot access any secure connections when I am on Afrihost.

The shaping is run dynamically, so not based on your individual monthly usage :) Based on your usage though, you may want to look at a Capped package - it'll work out cheaper.

Seeing that Afriman is such a big Walking Dead fan, im going to post this here...

WHAT THE HELL JUST HAPPPEEENNEDD

Capped will definitely be better for you, as the entire experience will be unshaped. However, if you would like to expand your internet borders and not worry about getting capped, uncapped would be better.

What happens when you use other DNS's or ISP's?

The shaping does not always run at that. That is the worst state it could be in. I am unshaped almost all the time here in Cape Town.

This is very strange indeed, are there any other settings on the router that have changed or may be influencing this?

It could possibly be a router issue. Have you tried a router reset and re-configure?

Well I am talking from my previous experience when I was on the home uncapped package, and talking about the current shaping on my friends' accounts. So nothing fictional about it.

Nope, but I was just saying that once you are shaped, you are not immediately down to 12% and 6%

If the shaping is that bad, it may not be worth it then... But the capped line is looking like the better option, regardless of the shaping, in any event.

Cheaper and better suited to my requirements, I think. You should bundle the DSL + Wifi roaming package with a line- who wants to deal with Telkom? :p

I guess the likelihood of me needing an uncapped line is rather small, in any event. A 30Gb capped line seems more than adequate for my needs, and gives me the benefits of wifi roaming and a better line speed, compared to a 1Mb line.

Thanks all, for the feedback. Will do a bit more investigating, and take it from there.

EDIT: Oh, one final question- what is the normal cost for the Telkom voice line rental? This information is not very easy to find on the Telkom site, and seems to differ dependent on the section of the site that I am browsing. Not that I will be using it, but hey ho.

I agree, with the amount of usage you are looking at you will be better off with a capped account. Also, the capped accounts are not shaped at all. So you will have your full line speed all the time.

If I recall correctly, its something like R152 p/m
