You clearly don't understand the shaping policy. It doesnt matter how much you use, if the network is under strain - you will get shaped.

I understand Afrihosts shaping policy very well I made sure to study it before signing up for an account.

The issue here is that Afrihost clearly do not have have the bandwidth to support their uncapped accounts. if the did the they would not need to shape accounts to less than 10% of their speed 24/7, what makes it even worse is when based on the information available on this forum, shaping is not applied in a uniform manner, with no logical explanation for the discrepancies.

My usage on the uncapped account has been far below afrihosts proudly advertised record users, yet I'm capped to speeds I last saw when dialing up using a 9600 baud modem.

Blindly defending their policies is not benefiting anyone, this is an open forum, and I'm allowed my opinions, and so is Afrihost, they are more than welcome to explain the issue, defend their policies or state that they are planning on improving the service. and in doing so prove that they are a company who believes in listening to their customers... or not...

Ultimately this is business and money is involved, so taking up a stand of "say something nice or shut up" need not apply. no matter how much you would like it to.

Don't worry. They are getting in more capacity soon so all should be good :)

Which area are you? The extra capacity in the North shouldn't be too far gone.

Can anyone confirm that my account will be cancelled at the end of this month if I cancel it now in the clientzone?

I'm based in Gauteng, East Rand to be specific, Also I have an Afrihost Mobile Wifi Device for when I'm on the road, and I'll not swap it for anything the price, service and convenience is second to none, but that does not, in my opinion at least, excuse the lackluster performance of the uncapped account.

Afrihost is really getting bad now... seriously can not believe people think they are good!

More Info on my line and speed issue and background:

Used this very useful tool (saves time doing it by hand)

And the results (look at those ms on traces):

Would like to advise people to stay away as FAR AS POSSIBLE from AfriHost. Not worth the money. Only reason I have sticked around so long is because they have good service.

Hi

Very odd results you're getting here indeed. The 2nd traceroute may indicate something strange with your exchange, but weird that the latency seems to jump up only a few hops later.

Drop me a PM with a bit more info and your account deets, and a ticket reference number if you have one, and I'll take a better look into this for you :)

Noticed it. But every time i log a call, send a twitter support request same old story.. Please log a call with telkom, please do this, please do that. And honestly.. as a paying customer.. should Afrihost not fix their issues? Instead of giving customers a load of BS every time?

Sorry you aren't getting the best experience with us :( If your line is with us we can most certainly log a fault for you and see this gets resolved.
Depending on the issue, it very well may be a Telkom exchange/ line related problem.

What issues are being experienced?

Anyone having issues with international? I did a tracert on google.co.za, and it is shocking. I can barely load any pages :(

There shouldn't be any general issues around, the timeout on the 2nd hop may indicate some packet loss/ issues on the exchange side of things. Are you still seeing issues with this?

I was shaped from day one, with 0 Mb bandwidth used for the month, and your answer is to get a business account and give them even more money?

At the current shaped status of my account I will have paid R 400 for the ability to use less bandwidth than if I bought a R 200 capped account.

I use uncapped because I work from home very often, and VPN into an office network so I need unlimited, reliable internet, which afrihost is clearly not capable of supplying. not to "download spam" whatever that means.

Really sorry that you haven't had the best experience with us, do you notice shaping 24/7 or just during certain times?
If you're in the North - we're waiting for that additional capacity. Some provisional capacity was added late last year - just waiting for the rest and we should see shaping queries/ concerns drop off.

I may have jumped the gun on my Afrihost purchase :p

I purchased a Business account, but Zertop said (in the other thread) that Home Uncapped performs just as well in the CPT area (and swapping back to Business is easy, if I'm not happy with Home uncapped).

I'm currently sitting with a 2mb Business Uncapped and want to switch to the 4mb Home Uncapped. Both accounts cost the same, and I've only had the 2mb Business account for less than a day, so I'd say this is a reasonable request :)

@AfriGuy, can you help me out?

Welcome aboard :)
This is definitely an easy move over, it can all be done via the ClientZone :)

Not bad at all, that means you have 75% of your line speed available to download and use P2P services. Does this ease up after hours?

Yup - got it. Was just confused cause as I said, I havnt been shaped in a while :p Im on 12%, 6% now :/ Oh well

My account has been shaped 24/7 since January 1st. I'm based in Gauteng, East Rand to be specific.

It definitely shouldn't be all the time, this is something we'd need to check out for you.
Please PM me your info and a ticket reference number so I can have a look at this.
