@AfriMan

My results from a capped account.
I know my exchange is borked, look at the time. Not every one is at home downloading.
My OW account is four time faster than Afrihost? with download speed.

Last Result:
Download Speed: 429 kbps (53.6 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 263 kbps (32.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Latency: 178 ms

Could you try something for me - please use a different DNS provider and re-run the test :)

@Afriman or Zertop

When I switch accounts from AH to OW or back I normally reset the router.
This give the router the changes to read to supplied DNS IP's.

I don't punch in DNS IP's router selects what ease supplied by ISP's.
Any suggestion? DNS values.

Try using Google DNS which is 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

You can also try or static DNS settings 196.7.7.7 and 196.7.8.9

Questions of logics I'm hoping one of the AfriGuys can answer. So Telkom upgraded all lines recently, reducing prices. 2Mb/s becomes 4Mb/s, 1Mb/s becomes 2Mb/s, etc.

I noticed that while my line is upgraded, ISPS (Afrihost included) aren't upgrading the data speed along with the line speed. My line has been upgraded from 1Mb/s to 2Mb/s (or so I assume, if it hasn't, then Telkom needs to get a move on) but I'm expected to pay R100 extra per month to upgrade my data speed from 1Mb/s to 2Mb/s.

Why not provide 2Mb/s for the former 1Mb/s price, in conjunction with Telkom's upgrade? If it's an issue with cap... well capped accounts shouldn't affect it, and uncapped accounts you can just put a slightly stronger fair usage policy in place for people who are using 150GB+ per month or whatever, dropping them back to 1Mb/s temporarily, etc.

I have noticed that running YouTube while connected to the Unotelly DNS, really slows it down and it buffers at around 480. Changing the DNS back to an auto setting gets me 720p YouTube flying again... Now I have to manually change DNS settings when switching between Netflix and YouTube! What a schlep

Or do what I do. Use these 2 bat files (i created them on my desktop).

netflixon.bat
netsh interface ipv4 set dns "Local Area Connection" static 196.41.139.189
ipconfig /flushdns

netflixoff.bat
netsh interface ipv4 set dns "Local Area Connection" static 10.0.0.1
ipconfig /flushdns

Well 1st of Feb, on an early Saturday morning, and already shaped at 18.8% and 6.25%. Is Afrihost this overpopulated? You surely can't blame companies for this.

Either way, I hope you guys bought more than one IPC. I don't think one is going to be enough!

Thanks never thought of running a batch file.... I'm battling with a syntax error. I'm on wireless connection...

Run ipconfig /all in a cmd window, and check the name of your wireless connection. Replace "Local Area Connection" in the batch file code with the new name.

Cool thanks that worked... Also found a little app called Dns Jumper that works as well

How much data would you be able to pull on a 10MB uncapped account before getting shaped/throttled/whatever they do. (used mainly for nntp, browsing and streaming)?

Your amount used doesn't affect shaping, it's applied when there is strain on the network (mostly during office hours). Different regions might be less shaped for instance in the Cape.

This wouldn't affect your browsing or streaming experience in any way. Only downloads and P2P gets shaped when necessary.

Thanks... how bad is the shaping usually? Contemplating trying this before the business account

They usually shape it down to 12.5% (of your line speed) for downloads and 8.8% for P2P. But most of the time it's around 50%, during peak maybe dropping to 12.5%. After hours your line should run at full speed. In Cape Town the shaping is a lot lighter (from my experience), and my line sometimes isn't shaped during the day, and definitely not on weekends.

I did notice that at one stage I downloaded a lot over a few days, and was shaped down to 12.5% for the whole weekend (even at night). I messaged AfriMan and the line cleared up the following day (might have been an error on their side). However, (most importantly) during that time browsing and streaming all worked 100%.

Thanks for that feedback. I moved from business to normal as I want to compare it as I don't fully utilise the line during office hours.

They have reduced the prices for the lines, but they wont be upgrading the data speeds for the time being. However - we should see some official news about this soonish :)
