You will have to;
a) do nothing and have have 2mb data account on a 4mb line sync speed,
b) Pay in more for 4mb data and have higher speeds, or
c) downgrade the line from 4mb to 2mb and save a little.

Ok, so will option a still give the 4mb download speed?

This could be due to the IOS7 that came out. It is killing ISP networks all over the world.
The ISP i work for...not an SA ISP...it has almost congested all of our major links.

This is not something Afrihost can help, but im sure they are doing their best to ease the impact.

Otherwise from my experience...before the IOS7 came out...i havent been shaped in awhile.

Just my 2cents. :)

Why not get the ios7 file and let us download it locally via nzb or even a HTTP link on a local AH server? Im not even a Ianything fan and now I have to suffer because of this crappy device. :(

Afriteam.

The latest announcement by Telkom:

ADSL line speeds will become
1mb -> 2mb
2mb -> 4mb
4mb/10mb -> 10mb

Any idea how this will be addressed? I.e will customers currently on a 2mb line automatically be synced at 4?

Or?

I'll have solid feedback on this in a few minutes :)
The line speed will most likely be upgraded, but if you're on a 2Mbps account you'll need to upgrade from there. Capped users will see the speed increase as soon as it's applied.

Let me just confirm a few things though - I'll post here in bit.

Caching would not help at all, one has to remember that when a ISP is shaping is it normally because they are running out of Telkom IPC capacity, not international bandwidth...caching would not help because you will be caching upstream of the IPC, everything still needs to move through IPC first.

Yeah, but we're talking about jinx traffic. If ISP's were caching it shouldn't increase traffic between ISPs, ie jinx.

Would be nice if you could verify for us as soon as you get the information.
I remember last time the users had to ask Afrihost (and other ISPs) who had their lines, to explicitly upgrade it, as Telkom only upgraded people with their lines at Telkom.

Well, hopefully the iBrigade all get their sodding updates soon; downloading the new AMD Catalyst drivers at 20 KB/s on a 4MB line is painful.

Would be nice if we could also upgrade to 4mb uncapped for like R100 or so more :)

Coolios, some info around the line upgrades.
In the past we've passed on the same value to clients, however as this has only been released today we'll need to confirm things with Telkom before we can commit to any product and price changes.

To add on the current high IPC load we're currently experiencing - we're seeing a slight decrease in overall traffic which should improve latencies and speeds. A lot of Home Uncapped clients are still being shaped to manage this though.

With your low prices I'd be worried to see too big a drop - that leaves less in the marketing budget to surprise the clients every now and then :D
I am however, worried about the effect this will have on the IPC load in the short run.

That is actually what it currently costs to upgrade your data to 4mb from 2mb :)

So for R100 extra you will get 4mb data on 4mb line (upgraded from 2mb)

Just moved to afrihost last night and I'm super impressed! I can watch YouTube properly and download speeds are good. So glad I left webafrica. Feels weird to have things working right and also want to say the service I have gotten so far was amazing. Made me right a compliment on hello peter for the first time :):beer::beer::):beer::)

What I am worried about (and my line is not even active yet) is that if everyones line gets upgraged then surely that puts more people on higher speed lines.

so say there were 100 people on 4 meg and 100 on 10 meg then when this takes effect there will be 200 on 10meg thus slowing the overall performance down for those who were subscribed to the 10 meg. I would not be happy about that. Happy about the increases though...

Glad to hear that!

What line speed do you have and what kind of spead are you getting on your downloads?

I am with Afrihost as well but waiting on my line activation. (REALLY hoping my line gets activated next week)

I have a one meg line but i chose to get a 2meg data uncapped. My 1meg line is still with webafrica but a crazy big difference with going through afrihost with my data. End of the month everything will go through afrihost. Im getting full speed. Torrents did go a bit slow at one point but after a short while it all picked up. Youtube does not get stuck at all as it did with webafrica. Ill run a speed test and post it when i get home.

If you're on 4Mb currently you can't get 10Mb as it's the same package currently. There will be more 4Mb users after the upgrade but not necessarily more 10Mb users.
