Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Things don't tend to change this dramatically overnight. That's what I still find odd...

If you need to limit something to 6.25% then something is running out of capacity. All I'm asking is what that'd be...

No, the shaping has no correlation to the capacity at all.
Shaping is applied to make sure that realtime services aren't degraded and it's there due to demand on the network. If we didn't have shaping in place non-essential traffic would be contending directly with browsing or a realtime service. If there was zero shaping what we'd see is an almost instant latency spike and have almost all services degraded on our network.

I'm not asking for a zero-shaping hypothetical. I'm asking, for interest's sake if nothing else, what'd need to change where in order to maintain usability across protocols. For argument's sake, who'd need more of what for P2P to be shaped to, say, 50% instead of 6.25...

You need to remember that our shaping doesn't look at account specific usage but rather the overall load on our network at any given time. At the moment the demand is a bit higher so we need to shape non-essential traffic to make sure the realtime services are not affected :)

I also just want to add while we're somewhat on the topic of increasing the IPC traffic.
This isn't a quick fix by any means. It requires extensive research and case studies, let alone the millions of Rands to complete this.

It's not a quick fix to just up the capacity, it won't eliminate shaping and will also take a few months to be implemented.

Appreciate the reply :) Hopefully the demand will subside soon so that things will return to normal.

Sluggish, uncached Youtube vids are my only issue

I hope it gets sorted too, slowly but surely getting really impatient here..

Sorry about that. We do know that it's not ideal for anyone. Once we can get a handle on the current demand, things should go back to normal. Not sure if that will affect YouTube caching though :(

We know it must be frustrating. Just remember that these is "down time" on the network overnight. Schedule downloads between midnight and 6am and leave your realtime services with max speeds for the best experience :)

Can I at least have my ClientZone specified 18.8%?

Code:
setup_2.1.77.0_htc.exe 8.8 KB/s - 7.0 MB of 128 MB, 3 hours left

:p

:(

Ok I must admit that if I run into the situation where it will take me three hours to download a 128 meg file then I am going back to using messenger pigeons...

Sorry about that, it can be pretty frustration. I still think though that it's a lot better to wait an hour to download a driver than not be able to browse or skype or pretty much use any internet service due to throttling or congestion.

It's about delivering the best possible service while there is a peak demand and we think our method really works out best

I do understand, but I am currently working from home and this involves downloading a lot of apps that we use in the office. And I am not able to do this. Really frustrating.

Yah I've got to say that at those speeds dial up internet is starting to look appealing lol...

Best possible service is NOT 3 hours for a 128 meg file no matter how you look at it.

Let's think about it this way, sometimes I work from home (not enough to justify a business account but the need is there every now and again). At these times I need to send and receive large files... sometimes a couple of 100 megs... I can't afford to wait three hours as then I would miss deadlines.

This also just reassures me that I made the right choice with a 10mbps line as hopefully even with this shaping I should get ok download speeds. (hoping)

Now if this dsl activation on my line will just take place!

Oh I forgot to mention, but even on my unshaped capped account I get the same speeds, so whatever is happening on my line is not simple shaping. And Again, my cellphone's 3G is better so it's not the "site/server/whatever person that's not Afrihost"'s fault.

But I will be in contact tonight when I get home.

Just signed for a 8mb business uncapped account, hope the transfer is done by the end of the month. Must say dealing with Afrihost thus far is great and you get information quickly. Got 8 emails in the span of 30min telling me whats going on.

OK it looks like this is here to stay....

Which ISP is the best now to download News....pref saix....or IS...or webafrica....
and not get shaped to death.

I really, really don't want to keep raging at you and your colleagues, but if you were to read back a couple of (dozen) pages you'll see I was one of the Afrihost clients defending the (logical and obvious) need for traffic management in a previous conversation in this thread. I'm not denying the necessity, nor would I have doubted the fairness of your system until last week. It still feels as if you don't get that my frustration arises from the dramatic difference in service quality we've seen.

If I think back to the few times I saw my connection shaped according to ClientZone in the past months, I can recall seeing P2P being shaped to somewhere in the 60% range every once in a while. Currently it's shaped to 6%. Usage trends, over a subscriber base several thousand strong (I'm sure ;) ), just should not shift fast enough - overnight! - to necessitate a further 90% reduction of already reduced throughput. Again, I'm not huge on torrents, but I do remember the numbers... I also remember 'No shaping applied' proclaimed for HTTP right alongside the P2P figure.

I'm just trying to understand the shift... Is that other ISP to blame, having chased all their monster users to you with their... erm... shift in policy? :p Unlikely, because one would expect THAT influx to coincide with the start of a new month...
