Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Hey Guys - I need your advice.

For some reason, every few hours, i get a network lapse at which point my internet at home just stops working. Pages just load forever and nothing happens, however, I am able to ping websites and get normal ping times while this is happening. This happens for about 5 minutes and then starts working again by itself? I've looked, and there is no network loop. Also, the router logs don't show any disconnects or restarts? It just happens for no reason, on all devices.

I've tried quite a few options, but nothing seems to be fixing it...

Anyone ever had an experience like this?

I also have this occasionally, and this happens on international and local sites. I see you are also in the south region, I think that is the issue. Afrihost refuse to admit it. There was somenthing about capactity issues before with the south region, not too sure if this was ever addressed.

Okay cool - so its not just me. However, I don't think it is an afrihost issue as such, as my pings don't change at all, even to international sites. I am in the south, and I was part of the begging process to get those capacity issues sorted out, which they did ;) Ill wait for afriman's reply, hopefully he can shed some light on this, and let us know if it is an Afrihost issue or something local.

I would just like to say well done to Afrihost thus far on service delivery, I have been if Mweb and TI, they both dont come close to our service deliveries. TI as only woken up now and now they have a rep on this forum

Keep up the good work!

It wouldn't be likely to be a network issue, as our entire network or Southern region network a least would drop of the map and we'd see a massive dip in throughout and we'd have thousands of complaints in a few short minutes.

It's more likely to be an issue with Telkom, either on the local exchange or with the routing of individual packets/throughput that don't reach our network. We've had some issues like this, especially on routers using other DNS servers, where we don't receive any packets, but somehow pings seems normal and even services like Skype continue to function

Thanks for the compliment. We really do our best to cover any possible channel to reach and communicate with our clients. And it's through talking to you guys that we get better at what we do. Thanks :)

Seems like there is crap again in Grahamstown - see your PM inbox :D

We'd have to check our logs to see if there was also a disconnection on our side, and what error was provided if so. Can you drop me a PM so I can check?

I have tried everything to get my line up to 10mb/s switched over to afrihost in June called up telkom they changed my profile from 4mb/s to 10 mb/s and was getting 4.8-4.9mb/s and got a call later that day from the local exchange saying they could not support my line on 10mb/s but snr and attenuation are within margins, tried everything since then getting my line higher than 3.30-3.32mb/s, I have phoned local exchange guys refuse to help have contacted afrihost and all they say is that 10mb/s is not supported by my exchange, have tried calling telkom, they say it flat out impossible for me to get higher than 3.42mb/s, so i have basically hit a brick wall, but the best off all is that, driving the other day past the dslam i noticed that there are moulds being laid for new vdsl boxes, so i phoned up local exchange guys and they told my that my area is the main priority for the vdsl upgrade but that the fibre optic cable had to be laid under the N1 and that sanral had refused telkom to do so and it has now gone to court, wonder how long that is going to take. anyway any advice for me on the 10mb/s issue? btw my local dslam is on g.dmt

It needs to be on adsl2+ to support 10mb/s.
As to the Telkom cables being under the N1... it should go via the current pipe systems under the road, there's not going to be an option of working on the road.

There is a machine that drills under roads. They used it quite extensively here in Cape Town, SanRal is just being difficult because the DA chucked them out! :-)

Danume if your line can only support 4 meg then so be it. One has to be within 500 metres of the exchange as the cable runs to be able to get 40Mbits a Telkom service centre told me.

There are several upgrades being run at the moment, especially with regard to fibre. In some cases Telkom are laying fibre backhaul from DP's to DSLAM's, in preparation for VDSL. So this sometimes has all the hallmarks of a ADSL2+ or VDSL ready line, but the exchange itself has not been upgraded so even the the line could do more, it's the card at the exchange that "Nyet".

Not sure about the Telkom / SANRAL dispute. If it is at the High Court, that will take a while to get resolved. Let's hope it all goes Telkom's way (for this case, not some of their others) :)

Does anyone here ever get full line speed over NNTP? I'm on a 1 meg line, and I always max at around 85kb/s, regardless of the time of day. This is using news.afrihost.co.za as my only provider, 5 connections.

Not news.afrihost.co.za Astraweb full line speed yes! Looks like news.afrihost is "shaping" nntp and Astraweb doesn't!

Same here, always get around 85kb/s on my 1mb line, DL DCS world from a FTP server in germany and my DL was @ 110kb/s on average.

Are you on Uncapped, and what is your current shaping policy?

We do shape NNTP (not from the server, but on individual ADSL accounts according to shaping policies) but this is only when demand is heavy and requires us to shape. IF that was the case though, all NNTP traffic would be shaped, not just from our NNTP server.

but even though 10mb/s requires adsl2 g.dmt still support up to 8mb/s does it not?

I am on the 1mb uncapped, but never get past the 85kb/sec mark even when it says no shaping applied.. HTTP and FTP DL can max out @120kb/s sometimes. Anyways still happy with the service.
