Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

You'll have a hard time getting anywhere even close to 200GB with Afrihost without taking special measures to circumvent their throttling.

I thought they don't throttle at all and only shape p2p and downloads

Correct. They don't THROTTLE. They do shape IF the network is under preassure.

I sometimes have large torrents or steam games dl'ing in the day at full speed. So if there is capacity you will get full speed in the day with NO restrictions.

They throttle left and right, they just like to call it 'shaping' to make it sound better.

But really, do you care if you're being 'shaped' or 'throttled' when your HTTP download goes at 30kB/s on a 4Mbps line and your 360p Youtube clip needs 5 seconds of buffering per 1 second played?

Depends on your location, so you have a ****ty line in Pretoria! I have a good line in Cape Town and get my 250 GB per month on a 2 GB package!

You do have the option of PM Afriman and posting here. Looks like he is off this weekend can't blame hime it is a long weekend

Sounds like you don't know the difference between exchange congestion and shaping! Post your trace route!
PM Afriman as well!

Yes, it sounds like you don't know the difference between exchange congestion and throttling. I agree.

Oh good white knight of Afrihost, tell me how congested my exchange is and how Afrihost would never, ever throttle anything!

MWEB customer here

Looking to find out what the experience is like when being shaped? How is YouTube, Streaming and general browsing

No Shaping whatsoever on Streaming, youtube or browsing :P This seems perfect for you

Sensing a lot of butthurt MWeb fanboys here.

I'm currently on Afrihost 1meg uncapped, pulling 150gb a month with casual use, streaming, some torrents, etc.
Used to do 400+ on my 4meg account with them but roommate moved out so I downscaled.

My friend is on the 10meg home package, his exchange and line quality only allows him a max of 6mbps, yet two months ago we pulled 1.64 terabyte from medium to high use, with NO special measures or apps, simple uTorrent, YouTube, online gaming and TV & Radio streaming. (Feel free to check Afri leaderboards when they're up again, having a DB issue at the moment).

We are both in Pretoria in areas with high bandwidth usage, yet still get brilliant service. The cherry on top is the fact that I can email Afrihost at 2AM about an issue with my DSL port and get a response and assistance within 10 minutes. Mweb took 3 hours (in office hours) to reply and notify me that "Seacom is offline". (Which COMPLETELY explains why I had international connectivity, yet no local connectivity.)

Please sort out your crappy hardware and DSL circuit before you crap on the name of a brilliant ISP like Afrihost.

Afrihost, keep up the good job.

International traffic getting shaped quite badly tonight for me. Clientzone says no shaping applied. 20Mbit.

Yup this is the first time I have had such terrible stats but it seems to have returned to normal in the last hour. I hope this doesn't become a trend at my exchange!

Yes it is. Am I right in understanding that these services will only be shaped when there is maintenance and extreme load on the network? If there is shaping is it above 50% of the line speed?

Indeed. They also run on multiple undersea cables so Seacom issues don't have much of an effect, only thing I've seen kill the network was IPC issues a few weeks back, but those basically wiped out ADSL all across the country.

While they were recovering, my friend (heavy user on 10 meg) had his P2P shaped by 40-60%, me (average user) had no shaping at all. It's pretty rare actually.

And if you believe that, I have a bridge to sell you.

Here's what Afrihost's great "unthrottled" browsing experience is like on a 4Mbps-but-recently-downgraded-to-2Mbps-because-why-pay-more-for-nothing:

So yes, I have to sit there and wait 27 seconds for this internet connection to load a simple image at 36.1kB/s, almost 1/8th of the speed being paid for.

Well sir. Sorry to hear that YOU are having a bad experience.

If it sucks so bad...leave. Other ISPs to choose from you know. We are just telling our experiences. And my experience is I can stream whenever I like and I can dl close to 400gb on a 2mb.

So if your service is bad mail afri and let them have a look and try and fix it.
