To be fair, it's also about usage - no-one can control that. If everyone in Johannesburg decides to eat at the same restaurant at the same time on the same day, it's going to be a long time before you get your MacMuffin :(

True true, I was actually referring to the time it takes them to install a line or activate the dsl (what im waiting for now) and so on... not internet as such.

I understand the whole restaurant analogy but hoping that I won't feel it too bad with the 10mbps line (the main reason for getting it is so that even if there is a high demand on the network that I will still hopefully get very usable speeds)

Afriman, how much should the current load affect my Youtubeness today? It's still moving on the slightly slow side :/

All makes sense. Thinking of changing to 6Mbps Uncapped Business DSL package any thoughts/recommendations on this?

@AfriMan - I want to have my McMuffin always available, like beer on tap, :) - Is the above mentioned package the correct way to go?

The MTN Mobile network is completely seperate from the MTN WACS and EASSy undersea cables. Afriman will be able to explain this so that it makes more sense. Check out http://www.afrihost.com/microsites/adsl_network/?src=website_nav

I think Mobile eventually does end up on the MTN network. However, traffic is not significantly congestion any of our network links. remember that our network has a combined 20Gbps overseas capacity, and our IPC can only ever use a portion of that. Mobile Data goes directly onto the MTN network (no IPC required) so we're definitely not at a stage where it's causing us to worry about local or overseas congestion :)

@AfriMan - my question to you is this. Is the additional demand not due to the fact that you have launched the mobile data?
Or is mobile data running of a different network? Which I doubt!

I am being shaped again at 12.5%/6.25%

Don't get me wrong I love Afrihost, but as your client base grows due to additional product offerings and so on, so should your bandwidth capabilities, in order not to put existing client base in this position.

Demand for bandwidth will always grow, just like demand for electricity. LOL, not pointing fingers at any organizations such as Eskom at all.

I don't believe Shaping is the solution to the problem, but rather just an interim prevention.

No, not at all. Shaping on DSL is a function of demand vs capacity on IPC. Mobile Data never goes near the IPC. Once you've connected to the closest tower, you're on the MTN network already. With DSL you need to break out of Telkom's network onto the MTN network, and the IPC controls how much traffic can break out at any given moment.

Totally unrelated :)

God, i was hoping everybody would have forgotten and i would have had at least 5mins to upload. Congrats afriman!

This would be fantastic if implemented. However, I do not think it will as it will cause conflict when people are getting shaped and they have a look at the graph only to see its "under" acceptable limits - not realizing it is under because people are being shaped.

Agreed, if we ever did something like this, we'd need to make sure that could explain exactly what is happening. Also, it also sparks a debate about who should be shaped and who shouldn't. Unless we really feel that it will be of benefit to the majority of clients (not just the exceptional tech fundi) we'd rather err on the side of caution :)

Line installation is totally in Telkom's hands - we have no influence there, I'm afraid :(

That's why we shape and monitor the network. While we may have to slow down downloads and torrents by priority, we can still deliver a high quality overall experience.
