Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Right, so I bought a 10gb capped account, and set my mikrotik router in such a way that the server goes over uncapped and rest of the house does capped account. Big difference.

Sounds like a nice setup. I've setup multiple SSID's with different QoS on them, but it all depends on how you want to run things :)

Hi Afriman,

This may be my local exchange but I can not be sure as it is very intermittent. Every 4th ping jumps to over 1000ms while the others are all 150ms. This is pinging bbc.co.uk

A traceroute will give us a better idea so we can see at which stage latency is introduced. Intermittent latency is more like to be on your exchange, but it could be server related. Maybe you're hitting a different content server every time and one of them is congested.

Seems *sort of* okay now. I think this is all my exchange to be honest. I mean look at the last two days. Its been hectic.

Doesn't look great. I see the timeouts on the BBC network though, things seemed pretty normal up to there and your local trace looks perfect. Are you always pinging the same server?

Same as earlier - no shaping applied but downloading at 70 KB/s on a 1 Mbs line. Switch to afrihost capped account and downloading at 105 KB/s. Back to uncapped and back to 70 KB/s.

Remember that there is also no QoS on Capped as there is on Uncapped. If there are any real time services on the network, they will prioritised, while on Capped, you will contend for bandwidth on your own line with no priority set.

Again...twitch perf is terrible.

If anyone is having a flawless twitch session please tell me your browser and setups.

Running 4mb uncapped, chrome, freshly formatted system...NO OTHER interfaces or progs taking bandwidth.

On youtube can get full linespeed and see it on bitmeter. On twitch it's lucky to break 120kB. And this is on recorded and live streams both.

Maybe a problem with twitch itself I dunno...anyone got ideas?

Sorry, not sure what this means but the question is: why can I get 105KB/s on a capped connection but 70 KB/s on an uncapped? Nothing else is using bandwidth my end. Are you saying that even when no shaping is being applied I still won't get the speed I am paying for?

Yeah, same problem. On 2Mb uncapped it won't go higher than 120KB/s either, if set to high quality. If I switch to my capped account it shoots up to 250KB/s no problem, no lag.

We'd have to run more tests and see what is actually happening on your end to give you an answer. There should be no difference if you are not running ANY other services at the same time. It also depends on how you are measuring the speeds - on speedtest, a file download or a torrent.

Drop me a PM and we'll get our team to start running some tests with you.

That's a huge difference, so it's something we'll need to look into. Can you send me your test results?

PM me or just drop them in a mail to [email protected] along with your DSL username :(

Which stream or vid are you watching specifically, I'll test quickly on my side

I am comparing on an http download and also testmy.net shows the same thing. I see I am not the only one reporting different speeds on capped vs uncapped. I will send you a pm shortly - what details do you need?

Will do. Will give it a 5 minute view and send you the graphs.
I don't use Twitch.tv, but for the other user that's struggling's sake I will do so.

Afrihost, please look into this WinMTR report. I'm having terrible latency only to international servers and the problem appears to be within the MTN network. This is pinging an EU game server (Path of Exile). Note the packet loss and timeout within the MTN network (Hops 4 and 5):

Just want to make sure this is seen, I only see problems within the MTN network here.

Ha! Did the same test now on my side. Switched to my capped 1gb afri account and lo and behold Bitmeter reports average upwards of 250kBs! Flawless perf on twitch on same video that suffered on uncapped.

Therefor...a problem on the uncapped side of things of how traffic gets routed.

And watching the IEM Innovasion vs Curious Sc2 match.

So why the heck is uncapped being hit so hard? Also have no shaping showing on my account?
