Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

The Afrihost consultant told me in email that they only dont shape business dsl from 8-5, after that if you have used too much bandwidth they will shape you on the business account as well. I have this in black and white from Afrihost.

Post the email here? (minus personal information).

Believe me, it's more puzzling from our side. The upsurge does no correspond to uptake in signups or any trend we can identify. As far as we can see traffic is "normal" - there is just so much more of it. iOS 7 may have just been the tipping point, or maybe it was just a coincidence, we just really don't know what happened.

We saw something similar happen in Cape Town on our previous network, but it seemed mostly localised to the Cape Area. We're seeing a huge deviance from usage that we carefully track and monitor. From what I can see, we're not the only ISP wondering what just happened, but we're obviously looking at every possible solution.

From what I can see (and read) the only ISP not wondering what's happened is TI. Has the reported peering issue been thoroughly investigated? With almost universal and instantaneous issues across all ISPs surely it must be the same issue affecting everyone?

I don't know what to do... I feel like I have WASTED my money.

I, too, feel like 10MB customers are being punished more aggressively than lower-tier users, which is ridiculous considering we pay significantly more for a premium service. Getting 0-8Kbps on a P2P Guild Wars 2 update last night was absolutely ridiculous for a service we pay over a grand per month to AfriHost for. It literally took me 3 times longer to download the initial 2MB update file via P2P (which I can't change) than it took me to download probably around 100MB via whatever protocol the actual update downloads over.

Hi,

Thank you for this. I think I will be cancelling completely then. They cannot advertise 24/7 unshaped on their site but then confirm the complete opposite in an email. I would like some feedback on this from the Afrihost reps urgently.

Maybe the oke made a mistake with his statement, if not then they really need to reconsider how they advertise, lets wait for them to comment/not comment.

Third straight day being shaped like this... to say that I am unhappy is an understatement... I downloaded ONE movie since the start of the month! That being under 2 gig. I understand that they apply shaping based on the subscriber communities overall usage but I am being shaped VERY aggressively.

If I am going to be shaped like this for the rest of the month I will be forced to downgrade my line speed (which I REALLY don't want to do) and then use a business account. The other option at the moment is to move to another ISP. I am not too keen on the second option as this problem seems to be universal through all ISP's.

I am stumped. Spent R995 on a nice router, R897 on the uncapped 10mbps bundle and am being shaped to such an extreme that my downloads are more than half as slow as the cheap capped 2 mbps product that our apartment block provides.

I know I have voiced my opinion here and probably seem like a tool but I am unhappy as I spent quite a bit of money on what I believed was a premium service with supposedly great customer service! I took months on these forums just browsing and reading peoples experiences and was happy with my choice. But then this **** storm started and I have had a HORRIBLE experience for 90% of the time that I have had my product up and running!

I am sure that it is not Afrihosts fault and that they are trying to find the solution but the time it is taking is really starting to anger me even more.

I chose to get a supposedly fast uncapped product so that I could download the shows I enjoy watching instead of getting a nice big DSTV package. I can't stream to my tv unfortunately, so that is out. At the moment I can't do what I intended on doing and the high end users Afrihost seem to brag about on their website actually seems like a bit of a lie used as a marketing tool.

I don't know what to do... I feel like I have WASTED my money.

I don't feel like this in unreasonable at all. You've spent your hard earned money and you want to get the best value for your money.

This is definitely NOT how we would like things to be, and anyone in this forum can tell you that we've generally been enjoying excellent Uncapped experience up to about a week or so ago. We can't account for the additional demand we're seeing, and we're looking at how we can alleviate shaping wherever we can - even though we don't touch real time services ever, downloading is a big part of the internet experience for most people.

I wish I could offer something more concrete, but I can promise that we know about what's happening, we care deeply about the frustrations our clients are going through, and every possible step is being taken to find short and long term solutions to deliver a quality product and experience to our clients.

Drop me a PM, let's chat more about what we can do for you :(

No, that's totally wrong! Business is unshaped 24 hours a day. Please PM (if you haven't already) so I can have a chat with whoever sent this mail.

Sorry for the bad information :(

We usually give a higher tolerance for bandwidth usage patterns with higher packages. In a few instances though we've has to apply blanket shaping to achieve the required management on demand to protect real time latency. As far as I know we should be back to our normal shaping rules, and you should still be shaped according to your respective line speed.

Well in that case. Could you please assist me in upgrading to the 2mb Uncapped Business account? I have been trying to do this on the ClientZone myself, but keep on getting errors. Also, if I am not happy with the service on the business account, can I downgrade to the home account again? Or let's say the shaping eases off on the home accounts, can I effortlessly go back to the home uncapped account again?

I don't know the details, as this is an issue between Telkom and MTN - not sure it involves us directly or indirectly. I haven't received any notice that this is the case, and I also don't know that peering issues could result in increased traffic at an IPC level.

Not to worry, I'm asking anyone who will listen about this to get some clarity :(

Are you in a bundle? You'll need to unbundle first and then upgrade and re-bundle. It to do with how the discounts are calculated that you can't cross-grade on bundles :(

Hi Guys, maybe the wrong place to ask but I will try anyway.

I have a Netgear D6300 ADSL Router and would like to setup my Afrihost Static IP on this router. Any Idea how to do this?

I did read an article that all Netgear Routers support the L2TP protocol. But still no clear answer from their support as to how to enable this static ip.

Regards,

I am yes. Have the 2mb Home Uncapped bundle right now.

Regards,

I'm not familiar with the setup with that router. In general you'll need to activate L2TP without IPSEC and connect to our L2TP server (196.30.121.50) and use your DSL username and password as login credentials.

Hope that helps :)
