Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

So now that you have the MWEB expats, now you cant handle it even though thats what you bragged with to draw the new clients to you? Pathetic. Just another ISP promising the stars and cant even deliver 1% of what they promise

As a customer-centric company, Afrihost still has my full support.

Things aren't looking very promising though. The shaping is still standing for about 4/5 days now?

Posting from my 1gb capped account right now - my uncapped account is dead for some reason.

As we mentioned before, the shaping is not based on totals but rather usage patterns.
This exact shaping policy has been in use during all of the months you've posted your totals for - it's been more active due to the higher network load.

So what's wrong with my usage pattern? If there are rules which work on usage patterns you will struggle to find a lower usage pattern on an uncapped account so on that basis I should be the first to have shaping eased, not the last.

Not your usage pattern. Everybody's usage pattern. AH shapes dynamically based on the load on their network. Even if you download nothing, you'll still be shaped if everybody else is downloading a lot.

That's my simplified understanding, except if this has changed since.

I wonder if the shaping isn't prolonging the current situation. Isn't there some clever stats people on here who can do some calculations on the effect if limiting data rates, when there's a backlog of downloads, etc etc.

Activated my last turbocharge to speed up a file I was downloading and what did it do? Dropped the download so now I have to start again and to make it worse, I can't start this download again for 1 hour so I am now sitting with a turbocharged line and nothing to download.
AH you owe me a turbocharge.

So i have 75 / 75 shaping ATM but cant even watch a 144p video without buffering :/ Its strange because my shaping has never dropped below 75%, yet now at 75% i cant really do anything, but last night at 75% i downloaded LinuxCNC without a hitch :/

Im all for the shaping... I actually dont mind it. but at 75 / 75 on a 1meg line I should still be able to watch stuff? (isnt youtube actually considered realtime? :/)

Anyways Thanks Afriman for trying to keep us all updated on the situation! :)

Edit: a turbocharge instantly bumped me up to 480p with not even a single buffering :/

I was thinking the same thing as well. Since as soon as everyone becomes unshaped they just start the downloads they've been waiting for and then the network goes to **** again.

how about this: I am currently paying R697 for a 4mbps uncapped bundle. the client zone estimates my monthly usage at 100GB. I can download 316.40625 GB on a 1mbps uncapped business line (theoretical max in a 30 day month). the business uncapped bundle is R397/mo. hence I can save R300 and download more than 3 times as much.

Afriman, I will pm you to make the changes.

This doesn't sound right at all, I'm really sorry about this :( Streaming should be unaffected even if you are quite heavily shaped.
Are you perhaps seeing a slight latency increase on your end? This generally ruins streaming :(

AH you owe me a turbocharge.

Could you perhaps try and schedule your download for later on tonight to see if it speeds things up?

lol, good to know. Coz in a few days almost all of us are going to have amazing usage stats of almost zero usage :D

Is there anything we can do to improve our stats - without causing strain? I mean, it seems scheduling my downloads between midnight and 7AM does not seem to make any difference - at least not to me.

If everyone schedules the bulk of their downloads for after hours we should start seeing a general improvement during the day. I'm not promising anything here, but it should certainly help :)

We know it's less than ideal :(
We've seen some slightly positive results today though - so let's hope this trend keeps happening!

Thanks for you support, it really does mean the world to us!
This doesn't look too promising - especially considering that you mention your account isn't performing overall - can you confirm that your streaming, browsing etc is being affected?

I think both AfriMan and myself have covered this quite a bit - it's not your usage patterns, it's the overall network in it's entirety.
The fact that you've used less data this month has absolutely no affect on what's currently happening.

The network is seeing higher load, hence the shaping is kicking in more frequently and regrettably, heavier.
