Not that shaping seems to matter much. Streaming has admittedly been mostly fine throughout, and downloads through a download manager do alright when there's supposedly no shaping applied. However torrents seem universally atrocious for me. I've got one torrent running at the moment - a well-seeded recording of this morning's GP. At current rates I might, might have it downloaded at some point during the week following the next race.

Okay, so I am going to try explain my understanding with the help of this picture:

COPYRIGHT ZERTOP BTW :P

Anyway, as you can see, different cities have different amounts of bandwidth dedicated to each of them. Each city has a dedicated IPC which controls which clients get what bandwidth etc etc. These IPC's are controlled independently from the "BIG SHAPING BOT OF DOOM", which means that the "BIG SHAPING BOT OF DOOM" can shape clients in different areas to a greater or lesser extent than other, less busy, areas.

For example, if (for some reason), everyone in Cape Town was downloading stuff and maxing out CPT IPC, while everyone in Jo-Burg was having a braai instead of downloading; shaping would be applied as such. Clients in Cape Town would be shaped, as there is a great demand, while clients in Jo-Burg wouldn't, as there is no demand on the IPC.

Another factor which contributes to irregular shaping are peoples line speeds. Lets say I have a 10Meg line, and you have a 1Meg line. Lets, for the sake of this example, say we both downloaded the latest "Linux Distro" (), which has a size of 5GB. If it were needed... you will be shaped to a greater degree than I would, as a 10Meg account should be able to download more in the same time frame than a 1Meg account should.

This is how I believe the shaping system works... @Afriman - correct me if I am wrong.

Could be, but I did see users from the same region as me having different shaping policies applies than what I was expereincing at that point.

When I was struggling with poor international speeds and with video streaming, Afrihost gave me a different login (critical care) to test and compare to my own account. Strangely, it was much, much better. According to Afrihost, both accounts are built to the same specifications and it should not make a difference. However, when I went back to my own login, the usual problems re-appeared. There is definitely something going on. Not sure exactly what it is but it smells like shaping.

And I am really just trying to get a bit of clarity here, not meaning to come over as being difficult at the moment :-)

What a joke....

So Shaped to ***** 17:30 on a Sunday afternoon.....I'm sorry I thought this was off peak. So apparently I'm confused and we're supposed to only use our lines for realtime services. Must have confused Afrihost with somebody who cares. This is beyond rediculous. I'm done. I'll happily pay double what I pay now somewhere else as a matter of principle. Really amazing to see that a company can go from the market leader to a mickey mouse outfit blabbing that everything is fine when it's obviously not.

So AfriGuy/Man/Gal. Last chance to keep a customer.....drop me a PM and please advise what you guys are going to do to keep a customer.....if we're still important in the least. Because paying 100% for 50% service is just not on I'm sorry.

How do you guys know you are being shapped? My torrents are flying at full line speed.

How do you guys know you are being shapped? My torrents are flying at full line speed.

Torrents were flying at full speed, now they are suddenly running 25% of that. Haven't even checked the Clientzone yet.

Thats the trick: the Client Zone shows that i'm not shaped but video streaming is really bad and torrents are cruising between 8 and 28k. http used to be flying along at 600k+ but earlier today was similar to the speed I got from torrents. I'm not too concerned about torrents but video streaming is my big issue. Hopefully they sort it out soon.

Be glad you still have internet. I've been without internet since midday Friday when latency went through the roof.

Still waiting for a Telkom technician, who was supposed to be here Friday, to come have a look.

Edit: Wonder what impact the Rage Expo is having on the network???

HTTP downloads being shaped to 20kb/s on a Sunday evening. Extremely frustrating. How much longer is this gonna carry on?

I am in centurion and like I have stated my torrents are still going full stream, have you checked for congestion at your exchange?

And ths here is exactly what confuses the hell out of me. How can 1 person be shaped to death and another have full speed connecting to the same ipc.
