Streaming doesn't always equal YouTube :) And your other realtime services are still able to be used.

Yeah... let's not do-si-do 'round this particular mulberry bush again, k? It's nearing four weeks since someone flipped some switch on your network, dude. Four. Weeks. This **** isn't amusing any longer.

A stream runs ahead of the video, once its finished streaming you still watch the video for some time no data transfer, if you download http you can start the next one simultaneously or as soon as the first one finishes no break in data transfer. Test this, download a few http files simultaneously and your per file won't decrease much, I found this. Weird for a while till I understood the dynamics

sorry afriguy but you gave little detail and will confuse ppl

Nope :) By sources I meant mirrors, sorry about the confusion.
Anyway, the two do work differently with downloads using more resources as opposed to streaming.

My sarcasm there seems to have been lost.

Point is that your shaping is so excessive on a 10Mb account that my phone can't even download 1-3MB app updates or a 60MB OS update without timing out. I also highly doubt that a phone is going to download an update using multiple streams.

Streaming also uses highly optimised protocols which don't put too much strain on the network.

It all still gets delivered via TCP packets, you don't magically connect to whatever streaming service via a new protocol, however the decoding of the packets work differently.

Anybody else have wierd latency for the last 5mins? I had constant 350ms locally for about 5mins now its fine again. Nobody using the line.

Fixed that for you.
On a more serious note - not here (Cape Town) - fluctuating between 50ms and 150ms locally, but nowhere near 350ms (touch wood).

We do understand, even if it doesn't seem like it.
Our team is doing everything they can to work this out, however we still believe that everyone is getting the best possible experience under the circumstances.

Nope.

However my line keeps on loosing sync as of lately :/ just randomly drops out and has to resync.

happened about 5 times tonight :|

Yes because 13kB/s is acceptable as being the best possible experience on a 10Mb line at 20:45pm

argh, too tired and frustrated to send traceroutes and stuff
everything is fine on the test account, ill do the troubleshooting tomorrow night.
this is depressing

You 'still believe', regardless of how many people are giving you real-world examples of exactly how utterly atrocious their experience is? Afrihost's starting to sound ever less like an ISP and ever more like a cult, frankly.

How long do you expect people's faith to hold? There hasn't been any tangible improvement in what's nearing a month. Hell, there hasn't even been any information forthcoming as to what you are planning to do when in order to improve the situation.

Downloads are P2P are being affected - we've seen plenty comments around realtime services being fine. We've admitted that this isn't ideal, we're aware of the issues and we're doing everything we possibly can to have them fixed... I'd really like to tell you that from tonight it'll be fixed, I can't.

What I can promise you and everyone else, is that we're working on a solution to have this sorted out.

I think you mis-read my post. Under the circumstances, in terms of heavier demand and shaping - we believe we're providing the best possible experience.

Shall I then just get a VPN service to bypass your shaping like your top downloaders and run my line 24/7 flat out?

How you can even remotely start to justify the speeds we're seeing as "the best possible experience" is beyond me

I'm not asking you to fabricate some tall tale that all will be well after tonight; I'm saying it's unreasonable for you to string along paying consumers for what's nearing a month, with absolutely no indication that the situation's set to improve. All things considered, the situation has progressively worsened. This past weekend I saw my connection shaped from Saturday morning through Sunday evening - the first time since this situation arose. It's 9pm now, and ClientZone shows 25/12.5... How is this even remotely acceptable?!

You have to be joking right now when you say best possible experience as my experience as a new subscriber not having had internet before has been nothing but a massive hassle. I thought hey, let's get a premium 10mbps line bundle and avoid any possible issues. Well mr afriperson I have only had issues.

Whenever I try and get it fixed they only ever reset my line / port and "stabilize" my account. Almost as if this is a default action for them, forget about trying to find the actual problem.

Now tonight I have had to wait almost an hour for a 60 meg game update on my xbox. This is after using turbo charge which made absolutely NO difference.

Besides this and them supposedly having fixed my line this morning. (See above on that "fix" the afripeople seem to love so much) my speedtest returned a brilliant result of under 4mbps. I am still waiting for someone to contact me. Sigh. Hasn't happened yet. No one gave me any feedback besides the normal "fix".

Seriously at this rate I am starting to think that messenger pigeons might be a faster/more stable and cheaper option.

We keep reading the same comments. Why not tell us what exactly it is that you are doing besides just saying that you are doing something?

I'm losing patience with this. I'm now sure that the shaping percentages in ClientZone mean very little. I'm supposed to be on 25% Download/ 12.5% P2P. But I'm getting a whole 2-3KB/s on NNTP. Someone's maths is horrible flawed. You know it's really bad when a 550 meg file is estimated at 47 hours.
And it is degrading despite the sporadic reports of improvement.
I know these things aren't easy to pin down but 4 weeks seems like ample time to figure it out.

I think it might be time for the powers that be at Afrihost to have a sit down and a) come up with a real plan to fix this thing, and b) discuss ways to make this up to subscribers who are currently not getting anywhere close to what they're paying for.

By no means do I agree to which point you ar throt...er shaped by the sliding scale, just advising why streaming is higher than http download. Realtime I believe is bs prooven that http download is pathetic, afihost clearly throt...er shapes any traffic that pauses less more often.
