Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

I changed my 2mbps uncapped bundle to a 4mbps bundle on Saturday, Only the ISP part has changed so far,
How long do they usually take to switch over? As far as i can see on the website it says 48 hours.

Afriperson, could you please explain something to me quickly that I think quite a few people do not understand.

Let's say in Clientzone it says: Shaping: 15% Download 15% P2P

Would that mean that the throughput is limited to 15% of your line, or 85% of your line?

Which is better to have? 15% Shaping or 75% Shaping?

It means that you may only achieve that percentage of your lines max throughput on that shaped service - so 75% is better than 25%.

Remember this is only services that fall within those descriptions, meaning everything else runs at full speed at all times - like gaming, browsing, streaming, VoIP, etc.

Sorry, late reply. I'm having issues this morning as well. Youtube buffers 144p on my 2mb line.

Forget about the congestion at exchange. This trace is bad.


I am also in Waterfall - I think the problem must be just us? Everything running fine till this morning - tried different accounts and everything I can think of - just very slow, streaming almost impossible. Problem is what to do - phone Telkom and they will come out and say nothing is wrong as it is connected!

I don't see Afrihost rep attending to hosting...unless I missed something.

Question: If I have my domain hosted with another service provider and a website and email hosted there. Now I want to go and host new email addresses for the same domain on Afrihost (Domain email) but leave all the existing emails and hosting alone, can I sign up for Domain email and then Self Management for the domain hosting?

Had this at work. I phoned Telkom every day for 2 weeks till they sended out a senior technician who then plugged in his laptop on our dsl line and said "hey look, it's syncing at 4mbps, nothing wrong here" And then he ran a speed test on his own Telkom ISP account and saw oops, it's buggered like I stated. He put me on a new port and we haven't had issues since. So yeah just keep on phoning them as often as possible.

Just had another client also complaining about speeds in Waterfall. It's not listed on Telkom's outage notice board though :(
 
Yeah, I see a few people making that assumption. We'll need to look at it to see if it can be clearer - but it's one of those either or scenarios :(

Please suggest putting an explanation on the site or changing the way it's displayed. With my brain I'm probably gonna forget how it works after a week.

You can sign up a self-managed domain on a hosting product, in which case we just provide you with disk space on a server. You'll still be able to login to the server via the IP and cPanel - but your domain DNS won't point to that server's content or mail records.

I'm not sure why you would want to do this. Maybe PM me cos I'm sure there's probably an easier (and cheaper way) to archive your old hosting :)
 
I plan on moving everything over in December when everyone is on holiday, but for now, I'll just add new mail addresses on Afrihost :D ThankS! :D

Ultimately we are on the same exchange, although I'm in Crestholmes. I did notice my line dropped a few times yesterday and this morning. Let's hope Telkom is working on the exchange to upgrade it. :)

I'm now on my capped account. Speeds are great. I could even remote into a work server for some work.

I notice my uncapped account is shaped to death at the moment. Shaping Policy: 25% Download/ 6.5% P2P.

Let's hope for the other announcement, SOON. :)

Looks like DBN is catching up to JHB in usage. But we're doing upgrades there as well :)

There's still nothing listed on the Telkom notice board for Waterfall - let's hope it is upgrades :)

Perhaps the bridge collapse affected it or do the data lines run overhead? I'm on the Kloof exchange with no issues, friends of mine on Afrihost would have moaned too by now if it was affecting the upper highway area.

this is nonsense , at the moment the throughput on my line is about 1% , and has been for the past 7 days , wake up afrihost and tell us the date this will be fixed.
 
OK can someone PLEASE help my figure this out.

Netflix is buffering every 20 seconds. So i check speedtest.net
My uncapped 4mbps gets about 100kB/s (18/8% shaping)
Turn on turbocharge and get about double that.

PURCHASE a capped account so I can see if a higher download speed is the solution.

Afrihost capped account gets about 50-90kB/s?!?!?!??!!?
WTF:mad::confused::(

EDIT:
Went back to uncapped and getting 100kB/s... "No Shaping Applied"

I seem to be having latency problems to gaming servers in Europe...specifically Wow, SC2 and some steam related games (This is on uncapped...capped is sitting low)

im usually sitting at 160ms but last few nights been pushing 300+

any reports of latency problems?
