That your network's dropping the odd packet at the moment...

You're seeing packet loss from the exchange all the way through - so I would guess it's not on the network side. I'm not seeing packet loss on my side.

If it's a line issue, wouldn't it affect transfer rates at all time? Why only affect it when when there is shaping on the network? I get great results when there is no shaping. So just wondering.
Thx will send a pm

Remember that shaping is applied as we reach peak times. It could well be that our peak usage coincides with peak usage on your exchange. Those blocked ICMP hops are also indicating that something is off somewhere - dunno if you're running through a firewall or something that might be colouring the results?

Fair enough. Telkom issue then? At my folks' place for a bit, and it's not something I've ever noticed from home.

Ive moved to a business uncapped account 2 days ago. I only peek at 60kb/s on my 1 meg line. I don't think it was worth the extra 100 bucks.

If you're on business and getting the same throughput - the issue may be on the line or your exchange. We'd need to test further to find out what's going on.

Please drop me a PM :(

It's possible. We'd need to run a few more tests though to be 100%.

You could connect to the Telkom guest account and run a test on Saix.net and then repeat with Afrihost - see if the results are the same

Hi AfriGuy

My connection has been running very slow for the last two days. Clientzone did not indicate any shaping. I then did a linecheck. Got the following results

Whats up?

Your line check seems pretty normal so far - I think we need more tests here.

If we can run a few traceroutes from your account and the telkom guest account to saix.net (as speedtests on saix) we can see if this is a line issue or exchange issue.

Please PM me :(

I must find this Afri Secret. Always so calm and polite when we crap on their heads, I would have gone nuclear after the third complaint.

Definitely can't see any latency on the network in general for at least 24 hours. Can you post a traceroute?

Switch to IS account and it works fine. Issue is with Afrihost. 1000ms, how is that even possible to a local server? Capped and uncapped both gave the same crappy latency. And the bizarre thing is, it seems enforced. When I reset my AH account it works perfect for a few seconds, then jumps back to 1000ms.

Translation: *We detect you aren't using port 80 traffic, here have some frustration*

Still struggling in waterfall this morning (I know this has nothing to do with my Afrihost account) but I see these stats in my router. Could this be the problem?

6mb line.

Downstream

SNR - 271
Attenuation DB - 160

Upstream

SNR - 208
Attenuation DB - 65

Never seen stats like that before. Drop me a PM and let me check your stats at the exchange. If you're getting these results then your line is pretty messed :(

Shaping should not induce latency - it merely gives lower priority and slower throughput to shaped services.

We'll need to see more traceroutes and evidence to comment further becuase we're not seeing anything like this on our own latency monitoring across the country :(

Have sent you the PM!

I'm touching a huge piece of wood here, but I have to say things are looking up today. No shaping for me thus far, which is a welcome change compared to the last 4 weeks!

I also just went into clientzone at work to turbo charge my line at home, surprisingly no shaping...

Afriman, are you saying that DBN demand for the IPC'S capacity nearby is increasing rapidly?? That's isn't exactly good for us. Are we gonna be shaped more heavily soon before new capacity is on air?

Demand is increasing but DBN is also due for an upgrade - so I think we'll be good. We've never had to do much shaping in the East, so I think we'll continue to be "chilled, bru" :)
