Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Hi chaps,

This may not *technically* be an Afrihost question but I am hoping someone here will know the answer. I have been told that there is a Telkom Network Freeze during December so they won't be upgrading the 1meg product at that time. Does that mean that they won't be installing new lines during that time either? I am moving to a new flat on 1/2 December, and I want to put in ADSL. Will I need to wait until January? Thanks for the help :)

Yes, there is a network freeze so nothing Telkom related happens during that time (it's around mid-december to early Jan). Telkom have given us start dates for each product upgrade but the chances are that all lines are going to be in the process of upgrading until possibly Feb 2014. Judging by the previous years - this would be a good bet.

Telkom have said that orders placed after 25 November will be for new speeds on all lines.

Do you think if I sneakily order the ADSL product on the 30th of November I'll get it installed in December before the freeze? :P

I think the freeze is on major stuff. Not sure how it affects line installations, etc but I'll get some clarity on this :(

Edit - Confirmed with Telkom that pretty much nothing happens during the network freeze in the way of network changes like installations etc.

Were you shaped during that time? Or was the news server not giving you great speeds?
As far as I can tell, the answer is yes (to both). Obviously I didn't stay up the whole night watching ClientZone to tell whether I was shaped or not...

So about 6 weeks into the nightmare ...and Netflix are streaming at the same quality as YouTube circa. 2005 AD

I know this isn't caused by Afrihost but between the shaping and congestion internet has been
almost unusable for me. Anyone else in the 021 712 area having the same issues?

If your line is with AH, ask them to log a fault through to Telkom. My exchange issues were sorted within a week after they escalated the ticket to probably the highest possible place.

There's a thread about it http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/552283-ADSL-in-Bergvliet-Capetown?highlight=bergvliet

So AfriMan, I see now that the shaping has gone beyond the P2P that I initially experienced & mentioned in a previous post here.

I'm busy downloading a direct download from Microsoft (which I am very sure their site has no limitation on traffic) and one 2,4GB ISO file is going to take 16 HOURS! On 2Mb line???

I Turbocharge and very shortly it goes to full speed for my line.

I mean, what is the deal here? Getting shaped on ALL DOWNLOADS?
Initially the explanation you gave was: "P2P strains the network". So why shape downloads that are not P2P?

What am I paying for exactly if you (Afrihost) chop and change what you're offering me?

Not impressed.

Apparently HTTP downloads are separate from real time services such as VOIP. gaming, HTTP like YouTube and general browsing. I think they have systems that are able to distinguish any type of download by looking at the packets and then shape it accordingly, HTTP Downloads use just as much resources, such as threads and connections than P2P so they have to be shaped to keep the network running efficiently to not jeopardize Real time services they everyone requires to get through the busy day, however during evening or weekends there may be times when shaping isn't applied. Shaping will ease a bit once more capacity is live, watch this space and forum to keep up with the trends :) Everyday that goes by we will see Afrihost network getting stronger. :) I may be stating the obvious but Afrihost are doing everything in there power to provide the best possible experience for there clients to an extent by managing the network wisely and proactively

Only reason I ask is because, as my previous posts stated, the only shaping I have ever experienced was with P2P, which was also during certain periods of the day. My direct downloads have never experienced this kind of shaping before. But since about 2 weeks ago, that all has changed. A year (of relatively no issues) later.

At this point I don't even care anymore. Leave. More capacity for me :p

Ah yes, the kind of response that MyBB has become (in)famous for... Well done to you.

Shaping is so bad, I had to turbo charge my connection last night, just to stream the cricket without freezing.

Another 11 days before I'm forced to make a decision about going to TI or not. The promised fix announcement, has not happened and it's been 2 months with the heavy shaping.
It's probably time to shape my debit order at the end of the month as well. :)

HTTP downloads have always been part of shaping, just always to a much lesser extent. Because HTTP downloads are fairly small usually - you may not have noticed, but this has always been the case and we actually relieved some HTTP download shaping to give a better overall experience.

We geneally don't shape OS updates - it depends on how Microsoft have tagged the traffic off their server. Apple OS updates are generally not shaped.

That's pretty awful congestion - at first glance. Have you done ay further troubleshooting though to confirm that this is the case?
