Afriguy/Afriman, are PSN downloads subject to shaping? I scheduled a download last night from 2AM and only managed to download 200MB in 5 hours. I'm on a 1 Mbps line and have been shaped at 25%/12.5% non stop for nearly four weeks now, everything else works fine except for torrents, which isn't much of a problem, and PSN which is very slow.

PSN uses port TCP80, so yes it will be shaped

Is PS3Proxy still popular? That was the only way I downloaded quickly off my PS3. Isn't port 80 a real time service?

PS3Proxy isn't much faster than a regular PS3 download now and is now a real pain to get a download link. But if PSN downloads are being shaped it won't really matter, PS+ suddenly seems a lot less worth it.

Yeah I've been off PS3 for a while now, just found the multi threading a lot quicker via a download manager but I agree it is easier just to let the PS3 do it. My biggest irritation was sitting down to a game and it needing an update.

Actually while is think about it, Sony offered a local CDN and this was back when local bandwidth was a lot cheaper.

Explain the difference please?

Good question. Not 100% sure how tbh, but somehow they are able to detect the type of packet being transferred. If that packet is a download, it gets shaped.

Afriman/Afriguy, I'd appreciate some help.
I have a 2mb home uncapped line, but since 1-Nov, my usenet downloads NEVER increased beyond 7KB/s (3-4%) day or night, while my Shaping Policy is 25% Downloads / 6.5%.
I've asked for support, but keep getting text book answers. I've followed some of this thread over the last week or so and aware of the capacity issues since Sep, but seriously, this shaping does not make sense.

BTW - I'm in Cpt
I haven't downloaded in a few days, also on a 2mb line. Tried last night hitting the news server and managed a grand total of 59MB in a few hours downloading during early hours of the morning .

This capacity problem is getting out of hand Afriman, I was shaped to 25% torrents the whole night. Have barely used my account in the last 2 weeks or so.

What area you in sir? The shaping will definitely ease a bit due to more live capacity that will take in effect soon. No ETA is given yet as far as I'm concerned.

We are still in the process of completing the upgrades to IPC nationally so we should see better performance soon. I'm pretty sure we'll have some good news to share shortly :)

Were you shaped during that time? Or was the news server not giving you great speeds?

We analyze the packet signature and this tells us what the content of the traffic is. We use a system that's used by US and EU ISPs to identify and manage web traffic - so it's pretty solid :)

As far as I know PSN uses normal HTTP downloads, so it would be shaped - but to a lesser extent than P2P or NNTP. I'm not sure whether they treat their firmware updates differently. We generally don't shape OS updates.

Has bandwidth got more expensive? I think local bandwidth is cheaper than it's ever been :)

Sorry poor wording, back when local capped bandwidth was a lot cheaper than the small cap you were given, these days with uncapped it's irrelevant.

Just a question from my side, apologies if this is the wrong thread, will we be upgraded in AH when Telkom completes the roll out process?

Your line will definitely be upgraded. Depending on what complimentary products you have - we'll be mailing you during the course of the upgrades to tell you how you will be affected. But in general, lines will be upgraded at no extra cost from our side :)

If you're on a 6.5% shaping policy - then you would get a maximum of 6%. However, if you are running other shaped services or even realtime services using a large portion of your bandwidth - you may not get the full 6.5% consistently.

Do you get a better experience when you Turbocharge?
