Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Afriman, please help. I'm sending you a PM. Telkom has incorrectly upgraded my line to from 4mb to 10mb. It's too far from the exchange so internet is not working.

That's awesome! Did Telkom mention anything further with regard to ASR rate limits?

They have fixed the backhaul capacity between my dslam and exchange, so the ASR rate limiting should NOT be kicking in. However I have no idea if they disabled that QoS service running on my box :(

Unless the techies physically switched it off I expect it could rear it's ugly head again if there are latency spikes in my area :(

Here is to hoping that they did and that does not happen!

Also hoping I am 10mb enabled by the weekend. Currently my service check shows 10mb running O_o whereas before it only showed 4mb. Need to go and reboot my router and modem :)

At the moment we can definitely provide the line portion of the upgrades for free as per Telkom, but data will need to be upgraded seperately for now. We're going to wait a little longer for the upgrades to settle so that we can assess the impact. We're still not certain how many people are going to actually be upgraded at the end of the day. Telkom has not confirmed whether people who cannot achieve higher sync rates will be upgraded, or simply left out of the process. We also have many clients on lower sync rates on 4Mbps and 10Mbps products due to distance from the exchanges and poor copper cabling - and we're not sure whether they are going to be upgraded or would prefer not to be if they are ultimately going to receive a degraded service (even if it looks better on paper).

We'll offer our clients the option to rather downgrade their line after the upgrade to take a saving rather - if they don't feel they need or can take advantage of the speed upgrades.

To be honest that's still a saving of 100 bucks a month if we don't have to pay for the line upgrade. I don't really mind that to be honest. I think that's smart on your part. The last thing anyone wants is lower prices but at the cost of the experience.

Well my exchange has been stuck on 2mb/s since the last upgrade. Actually, I think it took a while after the upgrade to go beyond 1. So I couldn't get beyond that if I wanted to. Whether they'll make up for that now or just bump to 4 is anyone's guess.

Personally I think that Telkom's upgrades seem great on paper but I think it's likely to cause more problems than anything else for the actual experience. To take Axxess for example. They already throttle so liberally that they couldn't possibly sustain their current pricing. My guess is that it'll either change after the 14th or you'll get twice the speed but be throttled twice as quickly.

Sorry to hear that. This is exactly what we've been afraid of. Hope that we don't get too many clients in this situation going forward :(

Will reply to your PM ASAP

Afridude, just a quick post from my side, things have been MUCH better so I don't want to complain, all stats look great but my youtube is crap lately. :(

It stops to load every 5 to 10 seconds for an extended period... it has come to a point where I don't even feel like chancing youtube.

Ok, I ran some tests on youtube tonight and the problem still persists. Everything else is working perfectly, but Youtube refuses to stream without constant buffering on 360p+

Will those timeouts cause some issues?

Youtube screenie showing pathetic kbps.. Or non existent download on 360p!! C'mon man

EDIT**

I have also noticed that my download speed is very inconsistent on Speedtest.net.. See below screenie..

This used to look like table mountain on my 2mb line, but now it is looking more like our highways. Lots of dips and jumps?? This needs to be sorted guys

Telkom haven't confirmed how long the upgrades will run for, but it looks like each level will be upgraded concurrently. 4 to 10Mbps started yesterday and 2 to 4Mbps starts on the 18th already.

I think upgrades will continue to run all the way into 2014 - so I don't have any info on which areas are being upgraded and when :(

10mb would be a luxury anyway. I will settle for a fully working 4mb line running at 90% 24/7 any day :)

Yeah, that article seems to paint a fairly dismal picture - I know one of our Director's commented as well.

At the end of the day it will benefit a lot of people who are getting slower speeds, but I think a lot of people who are in limbo because of physical issues are going to end up getting a cash saving rather than better speeds - which I guess is still better than a kick in the ghoulies :)

Thanks Afriman. Hope so too. ISP's will be spending unnecessary resources sorting out all the issues.

We'll need to look into this. YouTube is testing pretty well for me - so it's not a routing issue. Just seems like throughput is not what it should be. Are you getting any indication on YouTube (stats for nerds) on what your throughput is?

Yeah, we'll need to see what's happening here. Looks like throughput is the problem because youtube is streaming perfectly for me on capped. Your throughput stats looked pretty dismal on the screenshot. And can you confirm that there are no background services running?

Thanks Afriman. Hope so too. ISP's will be spending unnecessary resources sorting out all the issues.

We did the same last year, but it all worked out well in the end. If Telkom put me on 40Mbps this time next year - I'll forgive them for the admin :)

Correct, absolutely nothing else running. It is only Youtube that is giving me these issues. Everything else is sharp! :)

I have no idea how to check that, I generally stream from my Ipad but how would I go about checking that on my PC?

Will have a look as soon as the problem raises its ugly head again.

Are there other streaming services that you use that are showing similar issues? Like Vimeo or Netflix? And what DNS settings are you using?

It shouldn't make a difference, but it really depends on whether you are running any other services at the time. Uncapped accounts have a QoS component to ensure best performance while capped accounts do not.

This could also be ore apparent if there are any throughput or latency issues on your line. Remember that Telkom start their upgrades today, so depending on where on their schedule your area sits, they could be doing all kinds of stuff in and around your area. I'm seeing a lot of reports of sync rates dropping unexpectedly, especially on on 10Mbps lines. One of my colleaugues on a 4Mbps line went from 4Mbps to 2Mbps to 500kbps in the space of a week or so.

We'd need to do some further troubleshooting to see what could be responsible for the poor performance :(

Ran some tracerts last night
