Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

That I don't actually know. I think it a pure coincidence that my fault got raised a week before they started doing the line upgrades in my area. I do think that the fact they were made aware of a previously unknown congested dslam it was put as a task to repair though. So I'd say it was open maybe 6 working days? On Monday my problems disappeared :)

The area "faults" are still open - which indicated that Telkom are still in the area working on some of the slams and exchanges. I'm still holding out for a dslam upgrade to 10mb :D (wishful thinking but oh well)

Ah OK - you may have been one of the lucky ones :)

Could you post the results of a traceroute here too? It'll give us better idea as to where the latency is being introduced.

This is the latest result, slightly better than last night.

Most definitely exchange. Why dont you go over to your neighbors and ask if they are having the same issue - just to make sure it is exchange and not something between your house and the DSLAM

So new prices kicking in soon? Just asking as iv'e seen a MYBB post that 4mbps will be upgraded to 10mbps before end of November and Axxess and Openweb are already on the new pricing.

Definitely the exchange :( Causing spikes and poor latency from the 2nd hop I'm afraid. Is your line with us?

Telkom are indeed running some line upgrades. We should have something announced soon, still ironing out a few details on our end :)

Can you announce it before the 28th? (Afrihost deadline to pause a service I think) Because if I can be on 10mbps for December regardless of what ISP it is it will be nice, hence once your new pricing kicks in I unpause my account. :)

Ok, as an Openweb user, I'm interested in what you guys have to offer in response to Telkom's latest game changing move.

I don't think I can commit to dates at the moment, our Management team are still reviewing things :)

Well either way I would just like to say thank you to Afrihost, seems like my problems are kind of sorted (touch wood).

Getting great consistent speeds and yah, just generally a very happy customer at the moment.

I think you guys should get new management that can make decisions quicker. This is in-line with the usual Afrihost "soon" ;) HaHa :)

That's really great to hear, glad we could come to a resolution on this :)

Haha, Gian and his team are by far the best decision makers I know. We'll come up with some awesome, we always do! Promise :)

That I do not doubt - before the shaped problems we have had - It was really going very well and as soon as there is more capacity then everything will run smooth again. You guys do give us great specials and deals :). Cannot wait for the next surprise :)

Hey Guys

Got some great news. We have managed to get some extra capacity nationally before the Telkom network freeze over December. This is a provisional upgrade until the full additional capacity we requested becomes available. The upgrades are now live in the North, South and the East.

Please remember that this is provisional capacity. Unfortunately we were not able to get as much as we would have liked, but we're already seeing a huge improvement in the East and the South. The North is still seeing more shaping than we'd like but we expect that contention will be minimised and we also expect that we'll see more unshaping or lesser shaping happening much quicker and shaping being applied a little slower.

Again, this is provisional capacity to ease the load on the network and to improve our clients overall experience until we can get our full order from Telkom. We still encourage all our clients to schedule torrents for after hours or overnight. Clients in the North will still experience shaping, but we expect that your overall experience is going to improve.

We'll be monitoring and tweaking over the coming weeks to try to find the best "sweet spots" to ensure that we shape as little as possible but also keep contention and throughput at optimal levels. We also expect traffic to die down as businesses starting winding down for the holidays - which will be a great relief on the demand on the network.

Thanks for your patience, and let's hope that Telkom gets our full order in as soon as possible :)
