Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

So AfriHost will be passing on ZERO savings/value back to its uncapped customers from the line speed upgrades.. ...

Not true at all. We're passing on ALL the savings we're getting from Telkom. So in terms of line rental all our clients will either get an upgraded line or they can downgrade and keep their speed and pay less every month.

Our data prices are not changing though - so people in bundles will receive emails as they are upgraded to inform them of how they will be affected and their options going forward. Clients with stand-alone data will need to upgrade accordingly. We've reviewed our competitors pricing and we still feel that our pricing is very much on par with Premium products (remember we don' throttle our Uncapped so you can't compare to Basic or Home packages elsewhere).

once upgrades have settled and we can see how many clients were impacted, we'll take that opportunity to revisit our pricing :)

Before all of you in Sharkstad start complaining and flooding this thread., this is on the AH noticeboard. :)

We have been notified that one of our IPC links in the Southern Region (Cape Town, Port Elizabeth and surrounding areas) is not performing as it should. We have reported the fault to Telkom and will be taking the link offline for maintenance. Once repaired we will restore full network capacity. We expect that there will be minimal impact to clients, though Uncapped shaping (only on torrents and downloads) may be more prevalent during this time. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience to affected clients."

One of our links on the Cape Town (Southern Region) IPC is currently being taken down for repairs by Telkom. We're awaiting Telkom to arrive and sort it out, but we've taken the link off the network for now.

So we're basically back to the capacity we had before upgrade - so there will be shaping. Hopefully Telkom will bring the link back up soon, but we'll do our best to provide the best experience we can until then. So far, it looks like shaping with be the only impact - and we're not seeing any latency or throughput issues so far.

Sorry for the inconvenience to any in the Cape - we're pushing this as hard as we can to get Telkom to sort out.

Well done on bringing that up :) before the complaints arise

Just a suggestion, I love the app BUT I'm still having to log onto the client zone to view my accounts shaping policy, Afriman can you make a suggestion to your developer(s) to include a feature that allows you to view the shaping policy from the app? Would be GREATLY appreciated :D

Something like this perhaps?

Good suggestion. Our aim is to have EVERYTHING in ClientZone to be in the App - so this is definitely on a wishlist somewhere. Maybe we should drop all current projects and focus on cloning our developers ;)

Hi

How do I check if telkom has upgraded my line from 2mb to 4mb? The telkom adsl checker and broadband sites both say the maximum speed is 4mb. They don't say what account I actually have

It's pretty confusing at the moment. The only way would be to check your actual line sync - either using our line test feature or by dropping me a PM so I can check for you :)

So if I'm on 1mbs uncapped, I will after upgrade, sync at 2mbs and access at 1mbs for R197?

poor speeds on this end 4mbline not even getting past 1.9 on a 4mb uncapped product but my capped account does 3.6 @Afriman any reasons as to why this is happening?

Some further inputs on my problem. I recently got a trail version of PingPlotter and the picture it shows is a bit freaky. Please see the attached images:

PingPlotter.yahoo.com.20131116.jpg

You will see a screen dump from PingPlotter. Basicly it does a tracert every 5 sec and then plots the results (ping times) on a graph. The top graph shows the average ping times over the last 5 mins for all the hops while the bottom graph shows the actual results for a specific hop over 3 hours.

Notice, the top graph report 80% packet loss from the second hop onwards. In the bottom graph those lost packets can be seen as red bands of 1 min each, seperated by bands of 15 sec (3 tracert) where the pings came through perfect. These bands are grouped thogether into groups of 4 with longer clear bands inbetween.

The pattern looks very regular to me. It is almost mechanical so I dont think it is noise. Any ideas?

Oh, and yes I know it starts on the IPC/Exchange link, however if it was a hardware failure on the Exchange, I would see it on all connections. I dont see it when I connect using a telkom adsl connection, so no it is not on the exchange.

I already sent a PM yesterday to AfriMan with my account details, should that be required.

Please, any assistance would be appreciated.

Edit: The first image does not show all the freakyness, so this is a blow-up of one of the bottom graphs

I think the 1Mbps bundle is currently R297 - so you would receive the same data package but your line will increase in speed at no extra charge. You wouldn't have the option of downgrading your line for a monthly saving on line rental - but you could decide to stay on the 1Mbps speed for no additional spend or to upgrade your data to the 2Mbps product.

Afriman, here is my honest opinion.

I have been using a trial openweb account for the past 4 days to compare speeds and pings to my current account, and I have found that it does not live up to the speed and ping of my Afrihost Account. While I was getting 600KBps in my torrents, and 1MBps on my multi-thread downloads, I would have got 1MBps on torrents and 1.2MBps on my multi-thread torrents. Pings on openweb ranged from 30-60 in gaming, while rang

I think using the MTN backbone has definite benefits. I would just like to say that I will not be moving to openweb and I will stick with you guys! Even now while I am shaped due to the IPC issues - I am browsing youtube and watching at 720p with no issues!

Thank you guys!

Wow, that's awesome! Really appreciate the positive feedback and the faith you show in us. I know that these days it's hard to be loyal to a single company - but we really do appreciate it and we hope that we reward loyalty in awesome ways :)

Just openly saying that I have not bribed Zertop in anyway for this post ;)

Hi Afriman - sent you a PM for when you get a chance. I know you chaps busy :)

I'm not bundled hence R197 for 1 mbps data.

So if I'm to continue paying at R197, I will have no benefit of the speed upgrade? Just want to make certain that I understand correctly.

While we are seeing some congestion, we're seeing solid latencies throughout and 0% packet loss on the network :(

This was done on Saturday 1-4pm, when there should not have been any congestion. If I do the same now, I get pretty much the same picture. So I doubt it is congestion or shaping.
