Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Hi Afriman :) Who is most badly effected IPC in which region in terms of shaping more than you would like due to more demand than available capacity? Is it the South or North currently? And how i the East looking :)

Ok, so strange things happened. My router is syncing at a random 3Mbps instead of 2Mbps...Why not 4Mbps if i may ask? Seeing as my router clearly wants to sync at that speed....

Getting around 238 - 248Kbp/s on torrents. Random speed test shows this:

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3118958140

and this:

So i switched to a capped account this is what i got:

http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3118977066

I doubt I will ever sync more than 4 Mbps on my line. My attenuation is super high 52 dB, that is high isn't it? Or is that normal or in the middle. I know over 60 you kinda screwed

Telkom recommend below 55dB so 52 is pretty close to the threshold. If they see values over 55dB they'll generally want to drop your sync for a more stable connection :(

:( damn or I get Telkom to fix my Line because its on there side and there responsibility right? Why should I have to pay a call out fee of over R300 :( when it's on there side and there duty to provide me a great service

If Telkom upgraded your line, they'll set you on the highest sync rate possible that seems to stably connect. Sounds like 3Mbps was the best setting the technician could set it at :(

Hmmm, is there any chance of asking them to increase my portfolio? These are my stats (which are pretty amazing if I do say so myself), According to these, I should be able to support 8Mbps very stable.

Downstream: 3066kbps
SNR: 22.5dB
Attenuation: 10.0dB

Upstream: 503kbps
SNR: 31.0dB
Attenuatuation: 22.6dB

Correct me if im wrong, but surely those are good enough for a 4Mb line? Also, im not worried about the pricing atm, so long as i'm not going to get charged for a 4Mb line I don't mind paying the extra data costs, which is another R100 for the 4Mb uncapped package. But I want to make sure this is possible :). Can someone from afrihost please clarify this.

Internet is lifeless. Can't get over 10 KBps on my line. TELKOM must of put me on a single pipe until they finish upgrading the exchange near by :( getting such slow Internet

Sir your attenuation is not bad, I can't see why you can't have a faster DSL account

Hi guys,

Considering moving to Afrihost. Just got throttled on my 2MB "premium" uncapped mweb service when I hit 205GB in 30 day rolling window.

Interested in taking up the 2mb silver or 4mb gold uncapped product. My line just got upgraded from 2-4 this week.

Two questions,
1- aside from shaping, does afrihost throttle?
2- does afrihost have a decent news server (Usenet)?

Afriman/guy, u welcome to respond as well. Will Afrihost be releasing revised pricing soon in light of the line upgrades happening?

Thanks

if you want to continue your downloads then i would NOT recommend afrihost, i was pulling more data on mweb before getting throttled than what i can pull on afrihost. being shaped is way better than throttled but in the end i'm pulling about half the data. on top of that i'm VERY disappointed in the customer service. the way Afriman has just skipped my post and replied to others shows me how little they value me. also they all seem to be turning a blind eye on the fact that they have stolen money from me.

so no don't go with afrihost, normal browsing will be better but you'll regret it. just don't hit your throttling limit on mweb and you'll be better off.

We have a news service we run with Highwinds (a very reputable service). If you're on our network, you'll always have free access and up to 5 connections :)[/QUOTE]

Please elaborate on the Highwinds service?

You only pay the callout fee if Telkom determine that the issue is not on their side (like if your router is unplugged or something). Otherwise callout should always be free :)

It's hard to tell from stats alone what a line can support. The factors that determine whether you can get higher speeds will only really show a difference when we give it a try.

IF you're line is managed by Afrihost - drop me a PM and we'll try setting it higher :)

I'm sorry that I missed your posts - I honestly did not see them. I've always said the best way to make sure you get assistance is to PM me - I get a notification on my mailbox and I can also make sure that I answer each and every query.

At the moment we are shaping more that we'd like. Even with provisional capacity we're not where we'd like to be. But we believe our shaping system is a truer uncapped method, and allow ultimately puts more bandwidth in our clients hands. Even with current shaping, our leaderboards show that it is still possible to move an awesome amount of data.

I'm not sure what your query related to, but please PM me and I promise I will look into this and get you assistance :(

Highwinds is like Astraweb or other news services, except that we offer it free to our clients who are on a our DSL network. If you google them you'll see that their a major content delivery service :)

There are plenty of exchanges being worked on - it's pretty hard to tell. Telkom also doesn't list the exchange on their noticeboard if they are busy working on it, which makes it pretty hard to know where the issues are :(
