Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

Looks like either serious congestion or a very bad line. We still shaping in the North, but otherwise we're seeing excellent throughput and latency throughout.

Definitely an unhappy line here :(

My line is pending movement to afrihost, guess I'll wait till then and then start breathing down your necks. Could the exchange currently being upgraded cause this?

Hi Afriguy

Looking to go move over to Afrihost next month. My exchange has been upgraded to 4mb by telkom. Can you let me know how much for a 2mb or 4mb uncapped account from you guys? Also your throttling policy.

PM me
Thanks

Our 2Mbps data is R297pm and our 4Mbps data is R397. In bundles, it would R397 for a 2Mbps bundle and R597 for a 4Mbps bundle (based on new prices and new Telkom line products).

We don't throttle - we can shape (based on network demand) but only on Peer-2-peer and downloads (to a much lesser extent). Real time services like gaming, streaming, browsing, etc are never shaped regardless of how much you use. Also, if demand is lower - we unshape or lightly shape as many clients as we possibly can regardless of usage - but from the lightest users.

It's more than likely. If you're entire exchange basically doubled in bandwidth consumption (potentially) then it would put a serious strain on the local backhaul.

Just remember that we manage your line - Telkom manages the exchange. Congestion is pretty much outside of our influence - we don't have an escalation of fault logging process for it officially with Telkom :(

Yes, I'm aware. Although last time I had exchange related problems the social media team somehow escalated the issue on Telkom's side and it was resolved quite quickly. I'll keep an eye on the stats and if it doesn't resolve itself I'll log faults.

Reason I asked is because I asked the telkom tech if the exchange was upgraded and he said they're busy with it. Also the exchange is a 4.7km drive from my house if that means anything

You can view the prices on afrihost.co.za

Afrihost doesn't throttle, only shape. Only downloads are shaped, youtube and web browsing is full speed all the time. The network only gets shaped when it is under strain, so the shaping is not constant.

The shaping is CONSTANT on P2P. They shape the P2P until it effectively becomes unusable for most people.

It starts from around 7am and lasts till around 1 am the next morning.

Currently nzb, torrent and YouTube feels heavily shaped. Haven't had max speed in my line in ages. What gives Afriman? Going to try get a test account from another ISP...

Looks like you hit the Telkom confusion trifecta here :(

We'll need to check your actual line sync and profile - but Telkom are still going to be upgrading until early Feb next year. There no real way of knowing unless you know for sure that you have actually upgraded already :(

Not a problem, I will post here again or give AH a call sometime in the new year and see if the line has been upgraded.

When I applied for the line, they said that 1mb/s is the fastest in this area but because I wanted 2mb/s they did that, no idea what they did though. Maby this can clear something up

Logging faults is pretty much all we can really do, we just hope that there are enough faults logged to warrant intervention by Telkom.

Telkom have a dedicated internal team that review daily congestion reports - so I'm pretty sure they know which exchanges are congested. But if that number is as high as 25% (or more) then I can imagine it's a pretty big task :(

4.7km is pretty far, so it's always going to cause issues until you can get an exchange a little closer.

That still means you have at least six hours where p2p is unshaped or very lightly shaped. And we also give you 5 FREE turbocharges per month and cheap topups to bypass shaping when you need to.

We still would like to shape less if we can, we think that December will be better when businesses go dark over the holidays and then hopefully Telkom will deliver our full capacity upgrade as early as possible :)

YouTube is never shaped - but if you're running shaped services trying to get more bandwidth, it may affect your real time services because of the QoS applied. We still believe that QoS delivers the best overall experience, but it may be better to run only realtime services for the best experience.

I get buffering on 1080 streaming on a 4meg line...

So your fix for poor nzb/torrenting is that I rather use real time services? Gotcha.

How do you explain shaping at 8pm at night? 10Kb/s at 8pm at night is unacceptable.

1Mbps should upgrade to 2Mbps and then be discontinued - but Telkom already amended their system to allow or a 1Mbps sync on 2Mbps lines so I think they are aware that some lines are not going to be able to handle the sync.

We'll have to see exactly how many clients will actually be able to make use of the upgrades or will rather opt for savings and a stable speed (though not really applicable for 1Mbps clients)

I am sorry I am not going to send any more pm's. I have sent what I can there is nothing new I can say in a pm. If I send anything I would only be repeating myself and I do not have time for that.

I have sent a crap load and (I think) Afriguy still promised on this thread that he will get back to me and has not forgotten about me! and "will" get back to me. I am not lying, you are more than welcome to search on this thread and I can promise you that you WILL find the post. I have still not received feedback and my line is still not working as it should.

Over a week now that it has been performing like ****. Last night I had "no" shaping applied and speeds were ok (NOT what they should be, got 4 - 5 mbps on my 10mbps bundle instead of the normal 8.5mbps) but I could not game as i took two steps forward and one back. This was beyond frustrating. I had to use turbocharge even though I had no shaping applied and only that made it better.

There are two reasons why I have a problem with this:

1) I work hard and I work a lot! So when I have time to relax I want to be able to press download and get my download OR I want to be able to go lie down on the couch and play some online games without issues. This was the reason why I got the 10mbps bundle from what I believe is the best ISP instead of a much cheaper 1mbps bundle.

2) I have been promised feedback but have received NONE. I understand that everyone at Afrihost is extremely busy but come on. More than a week with no feedback and the problem is still not resolved. Besides me having sent multiple speedtests and trace routes and having contacted more than one representative and posting on this thread multiple times.

Really sorry that we're not giving you feedback on this. Please PM me, I know you did forward one of your mails as well, and let's get some movement on this issue :(
