Awesome!
The switch over to Business will take place at midnight tonight, from from 0:01 tomorrow morning you'll be on Business.

Arg, and I was so excited to try it today ;) Guess I can survive another couple of hours.

Edit - thanks for the headsup, though!

It took me about 20 minutes to download an update to teamspeak earlier. That's quite lame when everyone is waiting on you to start the game. Also, I'm completely unable to stream from twitch.tv, is this also shaped then?

Twitch is sometimes terribly slow, sometimes okisch... seemed to me depending on the channel, e.g. if the stream is on a content server near you it's ok otherwise not. Regarding P2P and downloads: If you live in Gauteng you basically get shaped to death for around 22h each day every day.

As I type this I am shaped to hell on 2mbps uncapped. NNTP speeds are terrible. I notice this on the AH website:

Is this kind of abuse really something that should be tolerated to the detriment of other customers?

Well it's better than throttling individual users, remember?

Well I'm sure those heavy users are in the minority. It's not the type of marketing tool I'd personally use when capacity is tight, but I get that Afrihost wants to accomodate them. To be honest, as long as there's enough capacity for me to do what I want to do, I could care less what they download. Your shaping does sound really hectic though :(

We order users from the most aggressive to least aggressive and start shaping from the top until we manage the demand on the network. So depending on where you are on that list (and what capacity versus demand is at the time) you'll be shaped or not shaped accordingly.

Hey AfriMan, just to clarify a few things:

What do you mean by aggressive? Is that total data usage, or current bandwidth usage?

Also, do downloads between 00:00 and 06:00 increase the chances of being shaped (i.e. move you higher on the "to-be-shaped" list) during the day?

I think they did confirm that this didn't apply, ie: there is no incentive to download during this time, therefore, this just pisses people off causing them to go "WTF? I will then download 24/7!" which just makes AH's waking hours capacity problem worse than it needs to be.

Definitely not shaped on our side, but there are some known issues with Twitch - we've logged quite a few issues with them and their network provider in the EU and US and we haven't really gotten anywhere yet :(

We are hoping to alleviate the shaping once new capacity goes live. But I'd still like to urge everyone to make use of the unshaped hours as much as possible overnight and schedule torrents and news downloads as much as possible. That way we can get the most out of the network at all times. I would say there are at least 7-8 hours daily where there network is basically unshaped for everyone.

Are you on a shaped or unshaped account? I'm on unshaped and everything is maxing out?

We don't see it as abuse, as most of these guys pull this bandwidth even with shaping applied. And as someone posted after this, we're talking about a handful of people amongst tens of thousands of clients, so their nett effect is very minimal on the overall network.

I'm thinking of coming to Afrihost from MWEB for their 4mb/s uncapped. Non business at the moment. Am I making a smart move?
I did that a week ago and am already regretting it. My primary uses: news server and streaming which accounted for about 90% of my usage are barely functional. I had assumed that their news server would be exempted from shaping (as mweb's is) given that it's on-network. As always: YMMV.

Agreed. We really hated having throttle clients, never quite felt right. As much as we'd love to give everyone an unshaped experience all the time, we must have some measures in place to protect the network. We definitely feel like this is the most open and fair system.

But we're always open to suggestions if it makes our service better :)

How the heck do they manage to use such large amounts? The best I have ever done is 130GB on a 1Mb line? They must bypass the shaping somehow.

Mweb's news server is not exempted from shaping. I was an Mweb customer some time ago, and NNTP( even from their own server) was definitely shaped.

It's not really about marketing. We just want to be as open and fun as possible around what's happening on the network. So it's a way to create some fun around our Uncapped products :)

We don't just use totals, we look at the amount of bandwidth moved over a certain length of time, while connected to their account. We also factor in their line speeds, so we try to shape according to who is really using the most resources.

At this point we don't have an incentive, but it's no that we're not open to doing this at all. We'd definitely like to look into this, so please come with suggestions and I'll take them to the powers that be :)

Couldn't say. If I move 200GB a month, I get exhausted. There only so much you can stream and download. I guess people have other needs though. One guy who was awesome enough to claim his title here on MyBB said he was replacing his software libraries because his PC crashed. So I guess they're not all just surfing The Pirate Bay :)
