Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback (Pt2)

I did that a week ago and am already regretting it. My primary uses: news server and streaming which accounted for about 90% of my usage are barely functional. I had assumed that their news server would be exempted from shaping (as mweb's is) given that it's on-network. As always: YMMV.

Sorry to hear that you're regretting the move. We may have some hurdles right now, but our clients are always assured that they will win in the long run - whether it's in savings or performance.

Our news server is not shaped per se. But if your DSL is being shaped, then that traffic is subject to shaping. The best solution is not to make complex rules around exceptions, but to simply be in a position to shape less which is what we're doing by adding more network capacity.

At this point we don't have an incentive, but it's no that we're not open to doing this at all. We'd definitely like to look into this, so please come with suggestions and I'll take them to the powers that be :)

The incentive would be that if one downloads between 0:00-6:00, the shaper should not count this data when it is deciding who to shape first.

Let's give an example.

2 customers with 4mb lines:

Customer 1 only downloads between 0:00-6:00 (8-9GB) for a month (x30 days) and totals approx 300GB.

Customer 2 only downloads between 9:00-17:00 but only pulls 150GB for example.

Even though customer 2 is putting more strain on the network when it really counts than customer 1, customer 1 will be shaped first because of his higher monthly total, and I think this is total BS!

With IS and their star rating, for example, if one downloads during these times, this doesn't affect the rating, therefore incentivising people to use the off peak times, and rewarded with lighter shaping during the peak times for important stuff.

Moral of the story, follow IS example.

Use it don't use it ;)

Some great ideas here, and I think it's definitely worth looking into. I must say though that I don't think the star rating system works like that, having worked with that system before we moved over. One of the reasons that we changed from throttling to demand shaping was because we had many clients having a really poor experience with that system.

But I guess to each his own. Will definitely take the hours based consumption idea to our bosses :)

Just got my mail with user of free gb , will go test when I get home. Hoping everything goes the way I want. So fedup with TI and their stories.

How the heck do they manage to use such large amounts? The best I have ever done is 130GB on a 1Mb line? They must bypass the shaping somehow.

They stream and game like 24/7, these services are Real Time and are therefore unshaped and not limited in anyway. Those figures you see in the leaderboards are mostly bandwidth taken from real time services: )

I speak from personal experience as an IS customer, I can promise you and have tested this, that I can be on 5 stars at midnight, download at linespeed until 6am, and still be on 5 stars. The star rating only gets affected with usage between 6am-11pm.

I don't know what system would be great. With this system Wingnut, can we only download from 12 am to 6 am and then we good. But what about 6am to 11pm, we won't be able to use the Internet really because we would be worried about loosing stars and then we shaped to the ground. Unless Real time services such as browsing and streaming don't effect the star rating. I personally think Afihost's system is not bad at all. It's just they need far more capacity on there network to accommodate for all of there clients. Demand is outweighing Capacity by a lot.

I just hope the new capacity comes live soon as this shaping is not easing early enough, I wish it would ease after 5 or 6 PM but It only eases from 10- 11pm, maybe even later some days :(

Each to their own as Afriman says, although, it is tiring monitoring the stars all the time, one ends up seeing stars :D

As I work during the day, not much data get's moved between 6am-5pm, after 5pm, it's unshaped anyway and can do whatever I want, which is more I can say for AH network. The times I am home during the day, shaping is hardly noticable, although, I don't download then, I'm talking browsing, a bit of youtube, maybe some netflix (SD instead of the HD I get after 5pm).

I've had ADSL for about 5 years, so the novelty has worn off and don't feel the need to download the internet, and see it more like a utility like electricity that's there when you need it.

Yeah, so far we haven't established that anyone is doing anything illegal or against AUP. Must be LOTS of HD streaming :(

I guess it can work for some, we had some clients who preferred to be on that system. Many more felt it was confusing and difficult to understand, and also it throttles overall throughput (or at least it did then). We think how we do things now is definitely a step in the right direction, and hopefully we'll keep moving forward to the ultimate uncapped experience.

Should definitely be soon. I imagine you'd probably notice some difference as well :)

Must be permanent HD streaming...
They aren't maybe using VPN's for downloading... ah... distros, are they?
