You must have missed this http://www.afrihost.com/site/network_status.

Update: Nope. Never mind, you were right to be skeptical. Minutes after posting this I am fully shaped once again. :(

I see your update and yes I'm aware of the notice, and the way I read it is this:

Nothing has happened yet, but to calm the scenery, we must say something because d-day has arrived.

It's either upgraded or it isn't, where did "provisionally upgraded" all of a sudden crop in?

I'll wait for Afriman to confirm, until then, I'll ignore the "provisionally upgraded" status, only because I've been around the block a few times and have learned that when an ISP has IPC issues, I've learnt not to waste your time hanging around, rather wait for the other suckers that do stay to report improved performance, then take it from there.

More inclined to believe the Axxess update:
UPDATE 2 Due to unforeseen technical delays, we have once again been informed that there will be a delay with the upgrade. We have not been provided with a new date at this time, we will update this notice as soon as one is provided. We would like to thank you for your patience in this regard.

Nothing has been done... shaping is still at the same level here. 12.5% and 6.5%.

I think it's time Afrihost makes a gesture of EPIC proportions to ALL uncapped clients for the long wait. I think 50% OFF for the last 3 months should cover it... anything less would be more of the same from them (here's to the "break-down" in the relationship!).

Time for AH to pay... so that they can feel a bit of the crap we have ALL gone through in the last 3 months ;)

What is this "provisionally upgraded" status that AH is spinning? If their sister company AXXESS has posted a notice that the upgrade has been delayed once more, which I'm inclined to believe, then the AH network status just labels them as lying (place word here).

Although I agree with you that AH have to enable damage control procedures, it's not really them that we should be angry at, instead it's incompetent MTN that we must burn down, and they (MTN) keep reaffirming my opinion of them that they are just like an incompetent government department, that is, they don't have a clue how to run a country (network).

@afriguy, are you expecting any delays with the IPC upgrade in the east or is everything on schedule?

Though you do have a point, I believe you have to lay blame at AH's doorstep... THEY are our service provider, not MTN. I did not sign up with MTN, I signed up with AH. THEY are the ones spinning the story, delaying, being unprofessional, not MTN. Irrespective of who's fault it is, AH needs to make sure that THEY keep THEIR client happy, which THEY are not doing. It's also too easy to tell us to leave and find a different ISP.... that's not the point! AH needs to make good on their "promise" of service delivery.... We are entitled under LAW to get what we pay for, and I will not entertain the BS story of "best-effort" service anymore. Their "best-effort" is what I was getting for 3 months before all the IPC issues. Between AH's IPC and Telkom's useless exchange/equipment upgrades/line issues, I, and many others, have wasted the last 3 months in this forum without even so much as an admission from AH. In business, there is only one way to prove your commitment to client service... you must pay out of your own pocket, if necessary, to show the client that you are genuine. All the lip service, deferment of responsibility, and constant blame-shifting has been AH's biggest downfall. If they haven't realised by now that we, the clients, are not their enemy, and are actually trying to be loyal, than they need to get out of the service delivery game, or take a serious look at their business model. In no other industry have I ever seen such an unwillingness to compensate clients for what is clearly not their fault, but an ISP's own supplier problem.

.... but hey, I suppose I should stop trying to get my pound of flesh and move on.... coz that is what would just solve everything? :wtf:

I mentioned on the business thread that we would continue shaping initially, just to slowly unshape - rather than the other way around.

Because we only received a provisional amount (i.e. not the full order we expected, though it's still a significant improvement percentage wise) we're going to very cautiously see where demand and capacity meet at the "sweet spot". It's also very difficult to determine because of the holiday, so we'll probably need to repeat this again next week as the work week begins on tuesday.

Depending on the demand we see, and how demand changes in response to the network, I expect that we will still need to shape to some degree for now (until we receive the rest of our capacity) but this should be much lighter and we should be unshaping a lot faster.

For now, we'll need to see how we can tweak the network for the best performance and experience.

Okay so AH/MTN has no weight at Telkom.

I think I saw several posts where it were mentioned that considerable pressure were being placed on Telkom to implement the IPC that was ordered about 8 months ago.
This resulted in a partial upgrade for the North about 5/ 6 months later and 2/3 months later a partial upgrade for the South, but nothing yet for the East.

Following the trend; month 10 might yield a partial upgrade for the East, by which time the North will be in full shaping mode, the South will still be in full shaping mode and the East will be in a semi full shaping mode.

Another 2 months and it will be another year later and Telkom is still showing you the middle finger, AH still putting on the pressure and the customers still paying for real time services, ie you can browse, read mail and, oh wait there is no "and" because you can't download at any decent speed and the real time streaming is also close too non existent.

Have I mentioned that Axcess is also on the MTN backbone and also still need to be upgraded in between months 8, 10 or 12?

My provisional evaluation of Afrihost Home Uncapoed @ R397/month from 05/02/2014 to 18/04/2014:
2/10

Edit:
Positives:

I am unshaped atm (10:26), although it is a holiday, but that could go both ways.
My speedtest which was constantly at 600kbps for international, is much higher at 2100kbps and closer to my expected 3.4Mbps.
Ping is at 236, which is much higher than my expected 190ms.

Well it's D-Day and what can I say, no shaping on my side. Seeing the shaping policy over the last 2 months I will take this as a good sign. At last there is some good news from AH and we all are going to have to wait and see what will happen next.
Thanks to Afriman for being here on this crucial day and cutting your Easter weekend short, hope you get double pay at least.

At the moment all is running full steam. Let's see what happens when all are starting their downloads.

I can't comment on why Axxess have updated as they have - I can confirm an upgrade was put in place and is not functioning in the South.

I don't think it's about having klout with Telkom, because I know other ISPs have publicly made statements about being in a similar position.

You are one of the lucky ones.... the rest of us have seen no improvement whatsoever. Still shaped at 12.5% and 6.5% :(

We seeing generally much lighter shaping on the network. Either your usage is being classified as heavy, or there is something not right there. Can you PM me please so I can check this out for you?

That's super awesome :)

4Mbps, EC

Almost 11:00 and still unshaped.
I'm running P2P for a 30 minute test and my average download shows 78kB/s, but I think it must have been influenced by previous readings, as I wasn't downloading anything before it.
In general my downloads are running at 340 - 360kB/s, so not full speed at all, but a far cry better than anything better the last few months I experienced.

Will test Http downloads after the 30 minute P2P test.

Sounds like we're getting there :)

Please keep me posted. Got all our management and technical eyes on, so we can iron out all the kinks for the long weekend :)

4Mbps, EC
P2P
Moved 457MB in about 30 minutes at average of 336kB/s

Http:
Nvidia VGA driver 167MB
Average:
396 kB/s

Although the download maily cam e down at 399kB/s, my line was maxed at 427 kB/s.
If this can last I'm officially happy.

I have only moved 39GB for the month, so usage is low.
